Let’s talk about the new killer.

I like its body horror look and its power is okay (if a little simple) but I keep seeing people say “it’s not as scary”. It’s better than most the killers we’ve gotten recently. Last killer to scare me was Dredge so im all for the body horror aspect.

I think they overdid the scary elements. There's a point where it's just too much. I mean basically everything about the killer is unusual and the head is just hilarious.

The killer would definitely be way more scary if it crawled imagine seeing that with undetectable

    Definitely does it for me.

Maybe I just have a stronger reaction to body horror, but man this thing

Not a fan at all. Just can't fall for the goofy Billy body and Bubba head look. Can see the designer of Unknown made Dredge and Singularity, all 3 kinda have things hanging off them and shout out to me that the same team designed them.

Map is terrific, power is meh

I have no idea why it's holding an axe. The teasers gave off the impression that it used fists/claws to attack victims.

    it actually prefect to me

Yeah, same. It’s just so incredibly disturbing… And its real mouth is on its back? It even has teeth 😰😨😨😨

Its interpretation of what a normal face looks like is chilling. I understand at first glance that it looks exaggeratedly cartoony… but that’s what this creature is making a human face look like irl… it’s just so incredibly disturbing.

  • ExcelSword
    ExcelSword Member Posts: 512

From what I understand, its basically some creature that is using one of it's victims (presumably a lumberjack) as a skin suit. So it is jerky and has unnatural movements due to not naturally being a human or bipedal in its true form

I honestly think it's wearing someone's face. Which is worse.

  • Nazzzak

Is it interpreting a face or is it wearing someone's skin? I havent read the lore yet but I assumed it was the latter

Y’kno, I haven’t watched any of the PTB, aside from ppl loading into the game, selecting Sable and The Unknown (to actually see them there on the screen) reading their lore, perks/add-ons.

Haven’t watched any gameplay yet, so I can’t comment on any of that. Just the appearance of them both alone, turned me onto wanting to buy them.

I haven’t had that happen with any other chapter, for both Killer AND Survivor, making me wanna buy the whole thing.

Sable looks wonderful, and Unknown is hella freaky creeptastic, imo

I’m wondering if after I see Unknown in action, if it really will have that comic/horror kinda vibe for me, like you and others have mentioned.

It's my favorite killer design in the whole game. Super unsettling to look at.

Scary is subjective, personally i don't think any of the killers (including Unknown) are scary, some of them are unsettling at best, but definitely not scary.

I'm on console 😥, but I've been watching a lot of stuff.

Apart from the killer's long neck, which doesn't work for me, I like it. It wasn't what I originally envisioned, but after taking it in, I think it's good. The disturbing, contortion-ey way it moves, coupled with the tentacles that erupt out of random parts of its body, really gives me "homicidal parasite wearing its victim as a skinsuit" vibes. It's cool.

I think BHVR's complete refusal to give us anything solid about its lore helps as well. Everything that I believe is true about it comes from in-game context clues. The weird parasitic extensions that appear out of random parts of the body and the fact that it somehow turns its victims to dust is what makes me think the body is a victim its wearing. Someone on Otz's stream even suggested that some of its voicelines are things it heard from the movies, which suggests the map is its favorite stalking grounds.

I actually like its power. The hallucinations add a teleport feature that doubles as some genuine psychological horror. I've already commented on how the UVX tentacle is implemented physically, but I think that its in-game functionality is actually perfect from a design point of view. Coding it to work like a mortar makes it stand alone among killer powers, similar to Singularity's biopods, and gives it really high skill expression. It also completely undermines typical looping rules with its bankshots. There are going to be some wild clips.

My only problems are its walk animation, which makes it look like its prancing around, and the axe. I'm sorry, but the axe just seems like a cliché that was randomly thrown in.

All in all though, can't wait for March 12th!

Horror is subjective, I've said this a lot since I joined this game. Some people are afraid of Chucky and yet he does nothing for me. Same with Clown, Legion, Plague, Twins, etc etc.

This thing? Absolutely send chills up my spine. I'm a big fan of internet creepypasta (the better written ones, at least) and this thing, while not being stellar lore wise but acceptable, visually creeps me the hell out with it's movements.

It looks like it is literally wearing a face but that smile looks super… idk how to put it… like it’s imitating what it thinks “normal” looks like. Like it’s making the skin smile like that… ugh it’s so scary to me! I haven’t read the lore so I don’t know for sure but how it mimics voices makes me think this. Like asking if you’ve seen its dog…

Idk it’s just so weird! Like it’s saying things that don’t always make sense. It may be using the memories of the people it inhabits. It says things that maybe pertain to what it actually is, or its history.

Edit: It could also be that the people it inhabits are still kind of conscious or alive still 😧😨😱

I’d like to say from a few videos I watched his animations look way too janky. Not like twitchy but more like….animation jumpy. Like those old Spirit animation glitches.

From the voicelines I think it did assimilate(?) the people from the theater because a lot of the voice lines do make sense in the context of a theater. It’s just soo unnerving.

I mentioned this on another thread as well, but it's going to be interesting to see what they do with the rift and tome for this chapter. How are they going to write a tome on The Unknown? Are they even going to try to?

Either way, the cosmetics for it will be wild.

The only thing I would do is make it so a tentacle would poke out of the eye socket and ear hole from time to time. Otherwise, he looks great in a disturbing, horrifying I never want to see it in irl.

Actually I just noticed the hair style and clothing is similar to Dwight's default outfit.

I guess The Unknown got to Dwight first

The contrast from how terrifying it was in the teasers to how hilarious it is in game almost gave me whiplash.

He has the best nodding animation though.

Either Pyramid Head for the way he walks towards you, Xenomorph for it's Clone skin or Unknown for how lifeless it's face is and how it's entire body is a twisted mess straight out of a surrealistic painting.

I love it. The weird, noodley limbs flopping around, the way it totters after survivors a little too quickly, all the exaggerated movements like it’s an alien trying to pilot a human body, it’s all great. All thumbs up from me.

100% agree with this, the walking animation is just the funniest to look at which is sad because the marketing for it made it incredibly creepy and I thought it would be able to crawl judging from that scene in the tent. If they gave it the ability to crawl it would be amazing.

I don't think there's a single killer in DbD who's scary to look at. Once you check them out on the menu, you think "oh so that's the monster that'll chase me" and carry on. There are unnerving killers though, and Unknown definitely fits that bill.

Power-wise, I will say that bright pink grenades aren't exactly the first thing I would've thought of for a scary killer, but the teleport is kinda spooky. Any time a survivor goes to dispel they risk you showing up out of nowhere, and in chase you can appear right ahead of them.

Or you could try some "come dispel me I'm definitely not the real killer" shenanigans with insidious lol

Probably wearing someone'a skin. The lore is not very clear what the Unknown is, but judging by the animations its look like its a monster wearing someone body as a cover.

I don't think he lived up to expectations. In terms of visuals he isn't bad, and I'm sure he can be made even better with cosmetics, but I think his power was a bit disappointing.

I imagine it will get some cool skins down the road, i was the same with Dredge's orginal design but his skins more than made up for it.

Okay, so I watched some gameplay of the Unknown… totally get the ‘goofy’ vibe you were going with, as it’s walking around. Astonishingly, NO pallets were broken by anyone playing him in 5 matches, so I didn’t get to see that animation silliness.

Although, I still think it’s very frightening!

Awesome monster-movie Killer design from the Devs, think they did a great job with this design.

Yeah I don't get it, except that it's easier to make cosmetics for. The 'scariness' of this thing was best in the trailers, the idea of it being right on top of you, ripping you apart, a mass of flesh and wrong body parts. It would be much creepier to me it it attacked with its body in some way. Hell, use the default lunge range but make the animation look more like a demo-pounce and I'd be way more impressed. An axe is just too... normal.

Agreed i love the teleport but it would've been so much more interesting if it could alternate between an fast undetectable crawling mode and the dangerous projectile mode.

If it were a cartoon that came to life, and its creator tried fighting it off with an axe before losing, and the cartoon took over the creator's body, distorting it in the process, it would be scary as.

But with the way it was teased, I was expecting something along the lines of a scrawny skin-walker crawling around or an unsettling creature like the screaming mutant bear in Annihilation mimicing humans.
