Would Map-Only Licenses Be Cool?

Hypothetically, if BHVR ascertained likeness rights to certain properties but all they could offer was a map, would that be worthwhile?

If we assume for a moment that the map is reasonably balanced - a large assumption, I know, but if we don't make it the conversation fizzles out immediately - would you enjoy seeing familiar locations without killers and survivors attached?

My example for what this might look like is CoD Zombies. Kinda hard to do a good killer or even really survivor here… but Kino Der Toten would kinda be cool to see as a map, I think. What do you guys think?

The Hedge Maze from The Shining in it's entirety. Snow and all. Put that in DBD. No obstacles, just a maze to get lost in. No room for 4man Gens, every gen become a single, or dual gen, one rare 3man gen. Basement always in the center. Hooks in corners. 😬

I’d be down for this. There’s a lot of locations I’d still love to see in DbD, both licensed and not. Now that you mention CoD, it’d be so neat to have Origins, Buried and Tranzit in the game.

I agree with Aven_Fallen though. I don’t think there’s any way they could turn a profit on this so seems like it’d be an unnecessary money sink.

That's a fair point, I don't think it's super likely either. Maybe if they bundled it with some cosmetics, but it doesn't seem that likely even then.

I think it'd be a neat idea outside of the likelihood, though.

Yeah, combining it with Cosmetics MIGHT work. I have to say, I would have loved a Attack on Titan-Map coming with the Cosmetics, with the Walls in the Background and also maybe TItans stomping next to the Trial Walls.

I guess it would be possible when combined with Cosmetics, but then again, it would be up to BHVR, because it would still be an expense they would not really need to do. Nobody would buy the Cosmetics because they added a Map (I assume). So they would still put ressources in it without gaining much from it. (Even if the Map would basically be paid by the Cosmetic Sales)

I think the problem may be funding.

Maps are generally free in this game, you can play them without paying for the DLC they are from. They also cost money to make, usually offset by the sales of cosmetics, dlcs and aurics. If they got map-only crossovers, they may have to pay out of pocket for both making the map and paying for the license, if I understand it right.

The problem with that is maps are completely free, so BHVR would have to shell out licensing fees with pretty much nothing in return aside from new players coming for said map and buying the game and/or other things like unrelated cosmetics and characters. Doubt the license holders would be very happy with that because they wouldn't be making much money either

Maps are always sunk dev time without return, but you're right that if they have to pay for the rights to use a third party licence they wouldn't do it for free.

License agreements are two-way streets though and there's a chance it could be one in BHVR's favour depending on the source. So there could be flexibility. The minimum they'd need to monetise it would be cosmetics. So I could see it being a mid-chapter cross over promotion with skins and a map. Similar to AoT, Crypt TV, and Iron Maiden.
