Counterforce: While the Iron is Hot

Since this perk is such a common talking point right now, I think it's a good time to Maurice-skin up some QoL talking points about this perk from yesteryear that went nowhere.

I suspect TotH is going to get nerfed so I'm not going to ask for Counterforce buffs or reworks (at least not to tackle TotH)... but...

  1. Why is this perk not a token perk? It is designed and functions like a token perk, but doesn't have tokens. Can it please be given tokens?
  2. Reveals the furthest Totem for 2/3/4s... why is it so short? I have ran this perk sometimes for fun, and I have legit not seen the totem on occasion where it has flashed so briefly and something distracted me. Its very annoying when it gets blocked by an unfortuante notification or some other aura in the way. I've sometimes seen a Totem so far away, I still basically have no idea where it is... I still have to run across the map to get to it, why not make it, I dunno, 8s or so, so I can at least try and triangulate it's position?

If we are talking buffs

I'm pretty sure the TotH slow is applied after the buff from Counterforce, so Counterforce gets a percentage of whatever TotH applies... though I can't find a source for this... I'll have to get a stopwatch out later and time it xD

Edit: Confirmed, the 70% slow of TotH also applies to Counterforce as well, which means the +0.2c/s becomes +0.06c/s, so you effectively get 6% bonus speed from Counterforce (46.67s becomes 38.89s).

With that in mind, and kinda regardless... would be nice if I started with an additional 20% boost when Cleansing dull totems. This would: -

  • Still be outclassed by TotH slowdown (basically takes the first cleanse back to a shade below old TotH at 0.42c/s or 33.33s), but that'd be decent for a perk no guaranteed to have value.
  • Could legit go for an anti-NOED/Face the Darkness/Plaything/Pentimento run with this change... which is still probably a throw, but is a laugh.

In my opinion, it doesn't need to be changed since you can take the red map and increase the range by add-one and you can cleanse any totem you see with its aura, especially since you get an additional 20% bonus after cleansing a totem, so in my opinion this is the best perk design.

Gotta admit I do like maps.

Though the tokens point is surely worth a thought?

If you cleanse a totem and do not see any totem aura, it means that all totems have been cleansed.

I can count totems done off the HUD perfectly fine, and I can remember how many totems I've done... my point is I shouldn't have to.

The perk is a token perk in every way with how it stacks up and how it functions, but for some reason it doesn't represent those stacks to the player. The way this is always done for every other perk of the same ilk is using tokens. I

If nothing else than for the sake of consistency and maintaining a standard uniform perk design, it should be made a token perk.

    Confirmed BTW:

The 70% slow of TotH is applied after the positive buffs to totem speed. This annoyingly is not written in the wiki anywhere that I can find, so had to manual test and time it.

This means the 70% also applies to Counterforce as well, which means the +0.2c/s you get normally from Counterforce becomes +0.06c/s, so you effectively get 6% bonus speed from Counterforce (46.67s becomes 38.89s).

There's a thing I've wanted for a while for Counterforce. If you cleanse a totem with Counterforce, and the furthest totem turns out to be a boon totem, you basically don't get any info, as you already see where the boon totem is. Although, if you are hunting down totems, this is actually hindering, because you don't get the info you want. You can't cleanse the boon, and you also get no info on other totems.

What I asked a few times was this: If, upon cleansing a totem with Counterforce, the furthest totem is a boon totem, ignore that totem and show the aura of the 2nd furthest totem. Switch to the next totem in line if the next furthest one is also a boon.

Actually solid suggestion... revealing the furthest non boon totem is another great QoL.

I not really convinced this perk really needs any number buffs, it's fine as is... but annoying little things like this being addressed would be really nice.

there's no need to manually test anything it's always the same old basic formula they use, wiki just hasn't been updated in a while i guess. have a look at this it's got you covered

It should reveal the closest totem instead of the furthest, have a 25/30% speed buff instead of 20% and should get a token system (but that last one is more of a QoL thing).

    Cheers that man!

I'm just a little anal and like having a source to cite whenever possible 😁

    Great link!
