Hot Take: We Need More PTBs With More Experimental Testing

In all seriousness, why not? Why not test new gameplay systems and mechanics? Why not test funky or busted addon ideas just to see how they would work?

I want to see BHVR experiment. I want to see them try new things, break the game and build it back up again.

they should make a game mode called “dbd classic” and make it where your in version 1.0.0

No entity blocker, bloodlust, REAL infinites, No Nurse, No exhaustion, 20 second sprint burst, insta BNP, Traps under hooks.

Show the players that were taking modern dbd for granted

They probably don't need to. All of the super experimental ideas are prototyped and tested internally, and the ones that don't work well are ruled out well before they reach the PTB stage. The things we see from there are the results of said experiments and further refinement.

The resources required to polish something to the point where it'd be suitable to have in the player's hands is probably not worth the risk compared to a quick internal prototype. Even if they preface it with "this is super experimental and will likely break", people will still give them flak for it either way.

The early stages of implementing an idea into a game are messy. Lots of weird prototypes and rapid tweaks, a LOT of placeholder materials. That kind of stuff is generally unsuitable to have in the player's hands, as it doesn't look or feel nice yet, and that can give people a negative image of the upcoming content.

Take an example, Old School Runescape are working on a new skill, Sailing, and they're taking the unique approach of showing the development process from a VERY early stage, said messy prototypes and the like. However, even though they have prefaced this with the fact that what's been shown is in very early alpha, some people run with what they're shown, and immediately assume it'll be terrible based on the very early workings.

OSRS has a unique development style anyway, where potential additions are voted on by the playerbase, and have to clear a certain percentage of yes votes to be added, but even with such a player-centered way of adding content, they still have the negative effects of showing such an early build of the content. This would be magnified for a studio with a more traditional way of pushing content like BHVR is.

I'd love to see what kind of weird and wacky ideas they've had and ended up deciding against adding, but short of getting a job as a game designer there, I don't think that's ever going to happen outside of a few exceptions.

    finally load in trial
"Wow games literally plays itself for me! This Wraith just wasted 2 minutes to force me drop one pallet, 25 on the way! So fun and challenging, it definately worth 5 hours queue"
close it and go into usual dbd

I wish we could, but devs can't keep up even with things which actually in need of changes, so they definately don't have development time on such things.

Because PTB's exist for marketing, mostly.

I don’t understand why Ptb can’t be on console?

I doubt they'd do this. We know they get limited bandwidth for any updates made to the game. So random PTBs for changes that may not even make it live will probably be seen as a too big a drain on resources.

The PTB version of the game would be its own download, and they have to pay for each update to the consoles. And then there's the certification process Microsoft and Sony and Nintendo each separately do to all updates, which can take several days at least.

Believe me I wish we had PTB access as well. Weeks go by before we get our hands on new stuff and see how it plays on the consoles, and with a controller too. There is a way, as both Minecraft and DayZ have "experimental" versions on Xbox for instance. But I don't see it ever happening, and as Pulsar mentioned it mostly for eyeballs mainly these days.

I don't think people would be happy about experimental PTBs, seeing as the few times they've actually tried that, people thought it was awful.

i think it is because they don't state that "this is experimental PTB". a lot of the PTB are often near or near complete product of what goes into the game. Sometimes there are minor changes from PTB so barely anyone consider the ptb as experimental. A lot of player see it as final product or close to final product.

if they did more experimental PTB where in bold letters, it stated, "These changes are not subject to go live". They are purely experimental and may show up in future in a finalized PTB. they need distinguish between Testing PTB vs Finalized PTB that will be pushed to live. Behaviour mostly does latter and rarely does the former.

That would be so extremely cool. Hope they are brave enough to do it one day.

They shouldn't do it on PTB, they should do it on live. Make a separate queue for "Experimental" you get more players that way. And they can test things like "no bloodlust" or "early game warmup" or "basekit DS" or any other crazy thing they want to see what happens.

Its opt-in, so players don't have to do it, and give a small little bonus for doing it so they get enough data.

I want them to do classic DBD game modes but do multiple iterations with each major patch from release in 2016 to Ash in 2019. I want each mode be exactly how the game was on release day of those patches. Broken Legion, broken MoM, old hatch with keys mid match and hatch grabs, original Freddy and Doctor, etc.

I would LOVE to see old legion again just to show how awful he was and show that there were worse designs than skull merchant

That would prolly be the only way to include all platforms and not just those from Steam.
