I know, its part of the analytics software that Admins can access but there's none at user level unfortunately as I wouldn't be against it.
I am also thinking of using the "online" feature - it shows which users are online at any given time…just going through the latest things and seeing what we want to use basically.

In short some people were getting mass down voted no matter what, and it made for an incredibly hostile environment.

Not really a fan of this change.
The forums can already be a negative place, no need to make it worse. Don't think a button that lets people indicate "your take sucks" without any form of further discussion will be beneficial. This will probably make me use the forums less if anything.
At least say WHY you think the take sucks at least.5 -

That is one of my concerns, that it will just encourage less discussion - but if we don't try it, we'll never know. It's not something we're locked into doing, it's very easy to switch off so if it does start to be problematic, it's just a flick of a switch.
It works well on a lot of other platforms, I hope it can work here.

Well, the thing is - your message is not going to get hidden with 5 downvotes (like you know where).
Because imagine what would've happen with all constructive criticism being hidden or sorted down just due to downvotes.
Now, if we don't like something, but don't want to get downvoted to oblivion - we might start our messages with:
- Guys! I love this game! But…
- Hey guys, I'm so sorry to say, but…
- No offence…
- I'm a fan of this feature, but…
- I'm gonna get downvoted, but…

My personal take: This will only increase toxicity and reluctance of voicing own opinion.
With downvotes people will see no need to express "Why I don't agree with you". Just downvote and that's it - leaving a person wonder why they get downvoted.
Not only that - it could be used with malicious intent, and we could see a "downvote brigades" sabotaging the forum and people's posts.

I understand the wanting to give it a try, but I don't think there's any way it'll work out good.
Getting downvoted inherently feels bad, which in turn will prevent people from voicing unpopular opinions. As much as I highly disagree with some users on this platform, I do think that everyone should feel safe to share their opinion as long as they are respectful.
Is there a specific objective in mind with the idea of reintroducing downvotes? What benefit do you think it'd bring to the platform? I'm struggling to see any upsides to such a thing so I'd like to hear what y'all have in mind.

Considering the bizarre uptick of it I've seen recently.. sweet, now people can accuse others of "botting" or "using alt accounts" for both the upvotes they get on their "disagreeable opinions", AND the downvotes they themselves get! 🤣

The issue with downvoting is that it shadow-silences people who don't share the mainstream view as there's always the risk of unfounded mass-downvoting (not to be confused by some people just going around downvoting everything). Yes, if you voice an opinion you have to be prepared for disagreement - however, pressing a button anonymously is not disagreement; if you want to criticise OP you also need to want to engage in a discussion. That's only possible if the criticism is voiced in a comment, with actual points that can be addressed.
Much rather I would like to see both the "down" and the "up" votes removed and have it replaced with "important"; to signal that you think the topic is relevant and important to discuss - regardless of which opinion you have on it.

what is the benefit of having downvotes? The only thing this does is increase the us vs them toxicity that exists in our forum discussions. Every post or comment that is viewed as pro-killer is going to get downvoted into oblivion simply because far more people are survivor-only players
