Appreciation post on the diversification on the recent licenses added

Dungeons and dragons is mainly a board game (I think idk much about dnd) and castlevania was a video game and before that the only video game franchises in dbd were from the big two horror juggernauts resident evil and silent hill. Tokyo ghoul is the first anime killer and fnaf is the first indie/mascot horror video game. Before that we had pinhead(rip),resident evil part 1/2, sadako xeno and chucky which are what you expect in dbd. I really like the diversification of what they consider gives me hope that one day slender man would come here. Since slender man is not really a movie, show or big game Franchise it’s a creepy pasta that had two popular indie games that were big on YouTube in the early to mid 2010s similar to fnaf. I hope slender man is the first creepypasta added. What license do you think has a higher chance to be added in dbd than before?

if "Tokyo ghoul" is the new road dbd walks, then im out for sure, i think he looks like a joke. it will never be a killer i can respect. - I mean no offense by this, but that is how i feel.

Absolutely, one of my favorite things about this game is the crossovers.
Even when its not perfect its still good.

Only 2 issues Ive ever had was.

    1. We dont have englund Freddy
    2. We dont have Charlotte Aulin in the castlevania chapter

Going off looks there are some killers that can't exactly be taken seriously unless you know them. Chucky, Legion and Trickster coming to mind unless you know them.

To be very clear though I'm not trying to say you're wrong for your opinion, or imply that you know nothing about Tokyo Ghoul.

They will probably add The Last of Us. It fits right in with their with all these other licenses they are adding and the IP is still hot.

Well, you will because you'll have to play against him. Same with people's initial reaction to Trickster. You can't just say, "I defy thee." and then they're not a threat anymore.

I mean you are not wrong, im not into cartoons.

I might have to eat a DC pen if i run into him, but its prob. good that im not playing that much anymore, because i think this is just getting weird (not you, but the dbd).

Tokyo Ghoul in DBD makes me excited for the future, because it opens the door for Lucy (from Elfen Lied) to be a killer one day

If Tokyo Ghoul got in, we might aswell add Sailor Moon

I would like some more classic killers, especially now that we've gotten a fair amount of odd choices as of late, but I'm also glad the devs are willing to pick something weird and keep people guessing. Ken Kanaki went from a character I was highly skeptical of to completely sold on after a day on the Ptb.

Honestly though, I'm getting the license I want next chapter, so as long as they keep things fresh, the new additions should keep my interest.

Ty, for taking the time to give me some background on him 🤩

Perhaps it will make it easier for me

Having not read the manga and just finished season 1 I was in shock at how brutal the torture was in the show. Definitely not intended for kids and certainly qualifies as horror

Just like just because Bubba got in, we might as well have added the pig from Babe, correct? They are both western live action movies after all.

Tbh, I think his inclusion is fine...

I think the only thing that irks me at all (and it's a small nitpick), is Kaneki looks a little too clean in DBD... he looks like he just strolled off the mangas front cover... all clean and tidy, no rips in his clothes or dirt on his shoes...

He looks like he's come from an anime, not the real world... like the man's been in the make up room for a couple of hours before strolling into the trial... a bit of dirt and grime would do a lot to not make him stick out quite as much. 😅

EDIT: I'm also not sure about this red glow when he's enraged... feels a bit arcadey to me. I've not got huge range of reference, but I think a faint red mist coming off him (like a more subtle Oni thing) or something would work better.

sadako xeno and chucky which are what you expect in dbd

Funnily enough, all of these had large (or at least very vocal) parts of the community against them.

While Nicolas Cage was welcomed with open arms.

people have very weird takes on what they accept and what not. Many people also just really lobe to complain no matter what.

You are the weird one for wanting to DC and ruin the game just because the killer is from a anime/manga/
Its not even his power or whatever that annoys you about him so who is the weird one?

Yeah characters like Trickster, Skull Merchant, and Tokyo Ghoul really throw me out of the "horror" vibe.. Most people I'm close to thought Trickster was the dumbest thing they'd ever seen. I think he looks kind of sinister, but that doesn't get him around how niche of an idea he is. A K Pop Killer? I mean…sure.. You can even watch reactions to DBD Killer trailers from fans and non fans alike..and most people don't seem to take the Trickster trailer. seriously at all outside of the audience it was intended for. Even Skull Merchant's trailer seems to get more praise.

I do think Skull Merchant is an abomination of a character design in every sense of the word. Even the name sucks. Someone was trying WAY TOO hard to have a unique idea, but it comes off as a discount bin concept.. Very underwhelming. I'm fine with anime licenses as well, but when you can't do them justice why even bother..? Tokyo Ghoul is just another Killer that will be conceptually underwhelming due to DBD's engine/code limitations, similar to Alien, Nemesis, and even Dracula.

Funny thing is, they are all bottom pick and Kaneki will likely have more pickrate than all 3 of them combined. The only one that is redeemed is Chucky because he is in the dash category.

The other 2 are in the forever disliked box

The Sadako in DBD is actually from the original Ringu novel instead of a movie, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not calling anyone weird, I'm just saying the situation is getting weird. There's a big difference. If you see that as a personal attack, that's on you. And if you put at least as much energy into reading as you put in trying to start a fight, you would also see that i specifically state that its not danielmaster87 im referring to as weird.

As for the DC's, people are already DCing (and have been doing it for years now) for the smallest reason, for example, getting downed, failed a loop, dont like the map, or dont like the killer. - And with an insane harsh DC pen of 60 seconds (sarcasm) i would say that this is accepted by BHVR, even while they say otherwise.

I'm mostly in agreement, barring two licenses that really don't belong here (Nick Cage & Tomb Raider), but at least those don't deviate TOO far (predominantly horror actor and inspiration from the one storyline that's horror adjacent).

D&D is an odd one, but it's a mostly blank canvas to tell any kind of story you like, and I believe horror is one of the most popular story types, plus Ravenloft exists (and would have been better than Vecna, but I understand not wanting Strahd when Dracula's around the corner). Castlevania is probably not a standard horror series, but it takes inspiration from so many classic horror creatures that it deserves a spot in the "Horror Hall of Fame". And Tokyo Ghoul is a GENUINE action-horror manga/anime that fits in just as well as the classic slashers.

People are going to gatekeep what "horror" is because their closemindedness leads to discrediting a medium they dislike (seriously, how difficult is it to understand that animation is a medium and not a genre, I mean, it's happening in this very thread), but that doesn't change the validity of any horror series coming in. I've got no attachment to Tokyo Ghoul, but if it opens the doors for something like Hellsing or Elfen Lied, I'm all for it. Plus, with most of the popular western slashers used up, BHVR's going to need to expand, and anime is one of the most popular art forms they can draw from, like it or not.

And with FNAF coming in, the doors to Indie Horror are wide open for so many other series (though the only one I can think of is Bendy).

BHVR had access to the books when making the chapter, but they have confirmed that they pretty much exclusively used the movies when someone reached out for information (link wasn't being allowed, so it's not clickable, but everything's there).
