Spine Chill Rework: New Anti-Aura Tool

Spine Chill has been suffering ever since the visual heartbeat came to the game, and I think it's high time an iconic perk like this one gets a new, healthy niche to fit into. For this rework, we're tossing out absolutely everything Spine Chill currently does and starting from the ground up. Here's what I pitch:

  • Whenever your aura is read by the Killer, Spine Chill activates for the duration of the aura reveal, playing an audio cue. While Spine Chill is activated, your grunts of pain are silenced, this effect lingering for 3/4/5 seconds after the aura reveal ends.

The main effect is, I hope, obvious. It's to tell you what perks and addons the killer is running, and to tell you exactly how long you're being revealed for.

The grunts of pain being silenced effect is really there for two reasons. One, it gives the perk something to scale with perk tiers, and two, it's somewhat thematic- your breath hitches and you go quiet as a chill runs up your spine, certain that you're being watched…

The secondary effect is not the important part. That part isn't meant to be why you pick the perk, it's just something to scale. The important part is that you know exactly when you're being seen and can make very educated guesses as to what you're being seen by.

This kind of perk would be useful for newer players especially, but it's not hard to imagine how veteran players might be able to use this info. It being a generic perk instead of a teachable means it's accessible to absolutely everyone, too.

    Good idea. Wouldn´t be bad to have a perk that shows you that your aura is revealed.

    I overall don´t like a lot of the aura stuff and i think it is way to much.

    Idk why people are downvoting, sounds like a weaker distortion and that perk is already weak.

    I wouldn't say weaker, and Distortion also isn't weak either.

    It's more of a sidegrade, since you get significantly more information but there's no direct blocking.

    Yeah I kinda worded that wrong. It doesn't do a ton unless a killer overly relies on aura reading, hence why I called it weak. This version sounds like a new players way to get familiar with aura reading to give them more time to act. Like if I'm playing bbq artist they can figure out that maybe they should avoid the birds. A nice way to teach them on the fly without holding their hands.

    I've wanted Spine Chill as an aura sense tool for so long.

    • Distortion needs you to get chases to get value beyond 1 aura detection.
    • Object of Obsession has an additional benefit/downside that you may not want if you're the Obsession.

    This gives Spine Chill a unique niche to fill.

    I don't particularly care what the scalable effect is, could be anything really:

    • Each time Spine Chill activates your next great skillcheck grants 1/2/3% additional progress when repairing or healing.
    • You gain 5% haste for 4/5/6 seconds.
    • Your vault speed is increased by 9% for 6/8/10 seconds.

    Whatever.

    I don't understand why you wrote chases as a minus. If you don't get chases, then what difference does killer sees you or not?
    And in any case, when the killer gets the ability to see your aura, you lose distortion token and immediately understand what the killer has for a perk, so having spine chille is a little pointless

    You have to get chased in order to get the information again, I would imagine is the point.

    Distortion blocks one aura → you have no more ability to detect the killer's perks and addons until you're chased.

    Spine Chill alerts you to one aura → you still have Spine Chill available for the next aura.

    It's more consistent information in exchange for less direct impact on the match.

    Hmmmm? What do you mean? Avoiding aura reading is the opposite of going for chases. The whole point of knowing the killers auras is to assist you in deciding whether or not you want to be seen/take chase and avoiding it if necessary. If I'm running Shoulder the Burden or Deliverance or Invocation: Weaving Spiders for example, I do not want to take chase so I can get use of my perk.

    The chase requirement is a downside for Distortion... taking chase directly puts you at risk and prevents certain strategies and builds. If you want to deduce more than 1 aura perk, you have to go get chase first so your ability to decipher the killers perks is on hold until you get multiple stacks through those chases. This is especially a problem for Lethal Pursuer builds... chances are the killer has another aura perk, bit you dont know what it might be (or if they have one) until you take another chase.

    Not to mention stealth killers like Ghost Face or Wraith can pop up next to you and hit you down/leave you and immediately break chase, meaning you may not even get another stack.

    Distortion has a good effect, but it starting with a single token is a (healthy) downside of Distortion, as it doesn't really allow you to say build to focus gen pressure or healing, because you need to be the one take chase for Distortion.

    Object of Obsession has a stronger effect in that you get to see the killers aura in response, but you also have your aura revealed every 30s when you're the Obsession.

    This also helps you determine killer auras in play, but is a perk that allows the killer to find you much more easily. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you're on death hook, or trying to break a 3 gen, this effect is a problem.

    Both Distortion and Object of Obsession have healthy downsides to the strength their abilities bring... one of the big weaknesses of both is you cannot hide the perk from the killer, the killer can deduce you have those perks.

    Spine Chill with this suggestion on the other hand would serve as a third flavour of aura reveal detection, that doesn't give away the fact you have it to the killer, and doesn't require you to fit your gameplay to the conditions of the perk.

    It fulfills a niche of allowing you quietly detect aura reading on the killer to decide when exactly you want to employ your knowledge of the killers aura perks in the trial. Once you know its in play If you want to take chase you can, if you don't want chase, you can hide in a locker.

    I'm not sure why what I said was so controversial 🤨🤨🤨🤨
