Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Dbd classic

Dbd should take after OW with an event like this. Have a "Dbd Classic" event that takes the game back to various balance patches. I know I'm not the only one nostalgic as hell for old dbd. I miss the old maps, the old perks, the old powers... everything about old dbd is, imo, superior. I miss it a lot.

Instead of a mode like Chaos Shuffle or 2v8, dbd should return to its roots. Even if it's only for a month or even a week, it'd be amazing.

I was thinking of you making this post :)

Did you enjoy playing old Sym again?

    In Overwatch?

Not much of a Symmetra player myself, friend, more Hanzo, Reaper and Mei.

But having freeze on primary fire again? Oh, that I sure loved!

Porting everyone off of the map :D
I tried the classic iterations of many characters that I often play in OW2, which was really fun, and it was a much different take on the game. Something that DBD could easily have done.
Keep the modern graphics, but use the old lighting and thicker fog. That would have been awesome, and then they could have done the most noteworthy patches in a rotating playlist. Granted, to make things a little more fair for killers, having the QoL feature of kicking generators would definitely be welcome.
I'd totally see the original 1.0 patch, along with a few others from the history of the game.
Maybe a tip for the 10 year anniversary next year.

PS: Judging from your profile name, I guess you got it from the "Should have picked Mercy" song.

Ah I could've sworn you said she was your main on there 😂 maybe I was thinking of someone else

I wanna have them do the old graphics if possible. I really miss the old look of the game too! I wouldn't mind small QOL things but they should leave the big ones out for both sides. The busted unfairness of it all was half the fun!

Of course 😂 being a Tracer main it was just the obvious first pick

There is a reason that these things got changed 😭

People may think this is a good idea, but it's not. They won't be laughing when 15 seconds in they get infinited by every single survivor, or heal themselves faster than you can go through the attack wipe cooldown.

Old DBD belongs in the past I'm afraid. Trying to bring it back for the sake of nostalgia would be a pointless waste of resources when everyone realises how unfun it is after a single match and returns to normal queues.

The game now is far superior to how it was in the past, both mechanically and in presentation.

I'd love a DBD classic mode.

Have first iteration be exactly how the game was at release - same killers, perks, maps, and broken mechanics. Have each iteration after be the DLC patches in order of release and have the game exactly how it was for the release of the patch. Do it up through like Oni or whoever was last DLC before realm beyond.

Original Mettle of Man, Original Legion, Original Freddy, original Doctor, original sabo, maps before realm beyond, original mori requirements, old key, hatch standoff, etc. Have the old UI and animations. None of the new perks, perk reworks, or basekit buffs/nerfs. Even remove the DC penalty and DC bots from that mode for the iterations that existed before the DC penalty was brought in. No adjusting the balance to fit today's standards.

People could see the broken mechanics and perks from both sides and see the changes the devs made in the game between each DLC. Maybe will appreciate certain things in current state, could also make people want certain changes reverted.

If they don't do DBD classic as a limited game mode it would be cool if they made it possible to do in custom matches. I'd totally do private matches with friends playing old versions of DBD if I could.

True I only miss the atmosphere and looks of it, fog etc. not the old perks (espicialy survivors one ds,deadhard) and palett vacuum, loops having 2 paletts like jungle jyms etc just broken game with no balance.

Wow sounds like fun for survivors who needed old Dead Hard to last more than 20 seconds in chase. Doesn't sound fun for killer players unless we can go back to the gen kick meta version

    2019 DBD was peak.

Yes! Genuinely my favorite time in this game. And it's not even that I was new and nostalgic for that, because I already had a good 5k hours at that point. It was just better

I disagree, seeing as how I have always mained killer and never really had a problem destroying people.

Same, though I gotta make the disclaimer that I want the 2019 DBD before Freddy's rework.

The hype for a DBD classic mode would die off really, really quickly, old versions of DBD were busted and full of incredibly unfun or flat out overpowered bullshit that got changed for a very good reason

And knowing this community, people would play it for a day, realise infinites, old dead hard, old mettle of man, old nurse, old legion, etc. are back, and then leave because playing against that crap was and would still be infuriating

The game has gotten objectively better with age, going back to a point where the game was less polished, less balanced, and less fun is a bad idea

No, it wont. Seeing how popular the classic modes of several older games has been.
Take World of Warcraft and Runescape for instance. Their classic versions has a lot of active users on a daily basis.
Classic mode was a hit in Overwatch, so much so that it brought back the classic 6v6 mode.

So, your argument holds very little weight here. Classic modes can absolutely be popular over a long time.

I've played this game for over 8 years If it were just graphical & powerwise, leaving maps otherwise as is ect maybe it could do something, I don't think most players these days would get past 2 games in dbd of old!

& as someone who plays at least 100 games of overwatch a week (usually between 200 - 300) Bastion main, Symmetra back up, Moria or zen if I have to heal & Orisa or Mauga if I'm forced to tank.

I've never especially enjoyed going back to the classics & actively avoid them now even if I like the rewards. I expect the same true of dbd beyond true long term players.

Having said all that, GeneralV old friend (yes I came back to the fog for one last hurrah 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️)

Hanzo I don't mind, Reaper I can get on board with but Mei???...

I would love dbd classic to be a thing though if for no other reason we can go show people what old Freddy could actually do!

Just because classic modes in different games were successful doesn’t mean that a dbd classic mode will be successful.
I doubt any of these listed games had as poor of a balance as classic dbd.

    Coffeecrashing Member Posts: 5,676

Old DBD would be way too much development time, for a mode that most people would hate because the game balance was absolutely terrible back then.

It would be much more realistic to ask for a limited game mode with a few old maps, so people can experience just how bad the map balance was back then.

And the old map game mode could be used to evaluate if it’s popular enough for the game mode to be expanded to include other old content.

Yes. Going back to versions, where philosophy wasn't in accordance to killer can 3K 50% of games while survivors should be able to escape 40% or less. A balanced version like it used to be.

Sabotages being possible again (not this stuff where killer downs between 3 hooks, goes for one, gets it saboed, hits a different survivor and is still able to carry him to yet another hook). A reason to reinstall the game.

But I'd rather 2019-2020 version instead of OG.

You just asked for a game version, where the red rank kill rate was around 70%.

  • Gandor
    Gandor Member Posts: 4,379

I was playing around that time. And the game was way more manageable. There were many more resources and things to work with. Sure enough, some things were missing (camping bubba was almost guarantee no matter how bad he was, BT was required on every single survivor, etc), but the game overall was MUCH BETTER.

I enjoyed that version of DBD very much. I am sour towards today's DBD

Resources didn’t mean as much, when Nurse had range and recharge addons, and the outdoor maps had so few line of sight blockers, that trying to counterplay Nurse was awful.

Resources also didn’t mean as much, when Spirit had zero directional audio, and everything really was a guessing game for the survivors.

The biggest difference with older DBD, is that the grade based matchmaking was so bad, that even though survivors had a lower escape rate, they had a higher percentage of games where they clearly won without struggling at all.

The other big difference was that before the hatch rework, if a survivor brought a key, or found a key in a chest, they didn’t need to worry about 3-gen or getting slugged for the 4k, because keys often bypassed both those mechanics.

    Smikey!

It is so good to see you again, my dear friend! How are you? I hope you're doing well!

Well, my character selections in Overwatch are interesting. But I liked freezing people, especially Genji players, it was funny. Sadly they changed that :(

And yes, I don't even have words to describe how amazing it would be to finally have Old Freddy back. I would be happy to prove to those who still doubt it that he was not even close to the position of weakest killer in the game.

I played at that time a lot. I remember. Sure. Nurse/Blight/Spirit were strong. But if you were really good, you could e.g. lightburn nurse. If you predicted right, u do it during chase and force her to fatigue! That was cool. Yet for some reason it needed to go (WHY?!?!? It was exactly high elo counter - a place where she always dominated and still does)

For all the other killers, resources. Even blight looses some time on pallet break. Those times were goated.

But you were right about spirit. Still… It wasn't that bad. She was 1 killer and she wasn't instawin too. Even though you are right that she was boring for survivors (you had 0 input for doing guesses)

  • Coffeecrashing
    Coffeecrashing Member Posts: 5,676

Blight probably isn’t a good example either. He had full object sliding back then, which meant he could slide across a wall, make a 90 degree angle turn, and continue sliding across the next wall. The older maps were also mostly smooth vertical walls, at convenient 90 degree angles, that were easily to slide across. And this is before BHVR started adding anti-blight clutter to loops.

Also, he had a fast pallet breaking addon back then, that I would combine with The Game map offering, and I think my win rate was pretty much 100% when the map offering was accepted. It turns out that when almost every resource on a map is a pallet, and the killer can super quickly break pallets, that the survivors didn’t really have much counterplay at all.

  • Emeal
    Emeal Member Posts: 6,625

Problem is, things where very unbalanced back then. So what is it gonna be then? an event with greater unbalance?

  • Gandor
    Gandor Member Posts: 4,379

Yes. Sure. Iri addons are sometimes like that. But if you want that experience, Legion is even better then blight with certain addons on Gideon. And it's still in the game…

  • Coffeecrashing
    Coffeecrashing Member Posts: 5,676

That’s not anywhere near as powerful.

Legion’s addon requires them to be in Feral Frenzy, and after breaking a pallet, they need to cancel their power (which stuns them in place), and then chase the survivor as an M1 killer.

Meanwhile, Blight didn’t need to be in a special mode, and he would recharge to full tokens during the pallet break animation… which meant he was able to immediately start his high mobility M2 power.

  • Gandor
    Gandor Member Posts: 4,379

it means u don't know the full addon combo. Believe me. It's same power. Especially if u take certain perks w it

the grade based matchmaking was so bad,

Dbd has never had a real matchmaking system lol

Ranks were genuinely better at keeping new players out of skilled lobbies, but even then, rainbow ranks 😂

    I liked freezing people

They actually brought that back with perks

  • Gandor
    Gandor Member Posts: 4,379

that'sok. It's probably healthier that virtually noone plays it. It's basically free win for killer. Much worse then current headonfield. So it's better that it's not played that much

  • GeneralV
    GeneralV Member Posts: 12,666

    Yep!

Basically the main reason why I got back to playing Mei over other characters that I also enjoy, like Hanzo and Reaper.

Meanwhile, here in DBD the stuff you enjoy from the past is just gone, and rarely ever returns. It is sad, really.

  • LegacySmikey
    LegacySmikey Member Posts: 161

Well if your freezing Genji I can let Mei slide 😂😂

Old Freddy definitely was never the weakest, but people still say Trapper is trash & against the best of the best swat swf he's gonna do badly (as virtually the whole roster) but against normal players & the majority of swf while he's not got all these fancy powers I do well.

Always did well with old freddy, haven't played this years rework & only went against him yesterday for the first time.

I'm not against the concept in general but I still doubt there's enough meaningful meta to make the mode popular. Like OW classic unlikely to play myself but I wouldn't play lights out again either & don't like chaos shuffle, & we definitely need some new game modes, bring back my little oni for a few days or something!

I remember rainbow ranks becoming more present during 2020.
It was never that bad beforehand, so it could have been an early test of the MMR system.

But DBD in 2019 had a solid matchmaking system. Most of the time when I played back then, I rarely ever saw any rainbow rank lobbies. Most were consistent around the same rank as mine. Plus or minus 1-2 ranks.
