New Afk system question.
So it says you are considered afk after 10 seconds of not interacting. Interacting with what? Does that mean specifically gens? If I'm going for a save across the map will it start counting me as afk?
Comments
-
So, from what I've gathered, you start earning "afk points" toward crows after 10 seconds of "not interacting". The points accumulate slower if you're near the killer, but you have to complete one of these to reset the "points":
- At least 15s of gen progress (I believe in one go).
- Fully break or bless a totem.
- Fully heal a health state for any survivor, including yourself.
- Open a chest.
- Be in chase with the killer.
I'm unsure how things like "being slugged" are counted, since you literally can't do anything but crawl. But I do know that missing a skill check while hooked will consider you attempting to "go next" for the disconnect penalty.
So, unless I'm missing a pretty big list, things like lurking for saves, literally any sneaky/stealth play, or even literally unhooking someone, don't reset your afk meter.
4 -
The more I read about how the system works it seems like they killed stealth play.
31 -
That would be correct, yes.
14 -
This goes beyond anything I would've considered reasonable. I usually try to give the benefit of the doubt, but… wow.
It really feels like they read some of the feedback on the forums about "punishing survivors for existing" and just pushed that live.
13 -
One important caveat here is that if a Survivor is actively moving or close to the Killer, the rate at which these AFK points accumulate behind the scenes is greatly slowed. This means that players should still have ample opportunities to opt for stealth where necessary.
It's not lost on me, though, that we're seeing some reports of folks who say they're receiving crows in the course of regular gameplay. The best way we can help relay your experiences to the team is through concrete evidence, so if you've encountered this, please do share video footage of this with us, ideally including the 2-4 minutes of footage before the crow shows up. This way, we can provide much more detail on the specific gameplay that led to this circumstance.

(Playful tone.) Hey, I take offense to this <3 I'm a Killer main. I punish survivors for existing already! So, they need to remove all these dumb changes and leave it up to me! I got it!
But, yes, these changes are terrible. I want the survivors to be able to play however they want, obviously. I already have the tools I need to deal with people forever hiding, which, by the way, is a behavior I've literally only seen once in about 600 matches, and it took me about 3 minutes to fix it and get a 4K. They don't need an "AFK System". My (in-game) knife is the AFK system!17 -
all hope is lost if we have to explain why this system is bad, it's definitely one of the worst thing you ever added in game, until you figure it out you should change the 10 seconds to 20 or 30, just let us breathe a bit in some situations some stealth is needed in this game
17 -
This statement is a little dramatic. Just provide gameplay footage of what is happening so they can see what's going on exactly and fix it? Is it really that hard?
I would provide some myself but truthfully and I mean this whole heartedly, I have YET to get a single crow. I am not saying its not happening of course, instead of saying the sky is falling all hope is lost, this is the END, just get a video. Goodness.
-12 -
This system is just not thought out. Ive had 3 killers today with no way out, which is now a basically safe win condition. To avoid the crows I have to trigger no way out, then more or less run towards the killer and either stay close to slow the process as much as possible or start a chase where they lose me and I last the full duration of no way out, then go back to the gate and open it with crows above my head. If its only 1 or 2 survivors still living at the end ur literary dead no matter what you do.
Like there are perks that literary force survivors to wait or spent long times doing actions like totems etc. It baffles me that apparently noone pointed out while testing this system that these perks exist and might be a problem that needs to be solved BEFORE the system is put out.
20 -
Yes i'm a little dramatic ^^ because this thing wasn't needed to begin with, game was fine, i'm also seeing more complaints about genrushing from killers because guess what you're pigeonholing everyone into the same playstyle
you keep adding these bad systems and the game is getting more and more robotic, I think you and devs are missing the bigger picture
12 -
I understand that you're asking for videos of the situations people have been talking about—and I'm certain that video evidence of these incidents will start to pile up fairly quickly, and I will be doing my best to record my own run ins where I can—but here's the thing:
I, along with a lot of other people, don't want the dev team to try and bug fix this AFK and anti go next system. I want the entire system nuked from orbit, gone, completely reverted. While I get that you were trying to address a concern that (some) of the community had, there is no feasible way to have this system exist in game without either screwing over people who have done nothing wrong and are just playing the game, or without totally stripping away agency, choice and enjoyment from a large chunk of your player base.
Additionally: this entire system is actively hostile against new players, during the release of a chapter that has brought in record amounts of new players—who are not going to stick around as a result.
9 -
This is false. It was needed to begin with. The whole reason it was implemented was because too many survivors were wasting too much time or holding the killer hostage when it’s the last 2 survivors.
I can’t tell you how many times I have had a teammate doing nearly nothing all match. Now they have to actually help. That’s my thing. Play the game or just don’t play.
-8 -
100% agree that the whole system needs to be nuked and that’s what most people want here. The only problem that needed to be addressed was (relatively rare) situations where two survivors remain and they hold the game hostage by hiding and not progressing gens. That’s an incredibly simple problem to solve and it should have been done a long time ago.
This feedback has been completely ignored and the dev team created a way-over-engineered solution to problems that don’t exist, and in the process they punished normal gameplay and forced people to play the game a very specific way to avoid punishment.10 -
You guys didn’t seem to test out any of the perk combos against this system. People are getting crows trying to open exit gates because of no way out and remember me combo.
We gave you guys tons of feedback on all the ways this could go wrong in the PTB, it went live anyway and now people are saying “this is what’s happening which we told you would happen in the PTB” and now we also have to go out of our way to record and upload video for you guys. Did no one test this out on your end at all?
The hundreds of comments across multiple social media platforms of peoples experiences isn’t enough? All these people arent just making this up.
15 -
Just saying:
Twitch exists.
You could have someone that's being paid go look at some stream recordings instead of expecting free labor from your player base.
Not everyone is on these forums to get this "hey, jump through a hoop for us" message. Even if you just flip through the socials of some of your notable content creators, that should give you enough evidence to work with.
9 -
Okay but if the problem really was generator rushing, why are we being punished and penalized for five in game hours for slinking around the map calculating our next move?
8 -
So I got 1 crow on me last night in a match cause I was staring at my 3 teammates across the map intentionally go down and try to get on hook so they can go next. I wasn't moving my character at this point and after about 15 seconds or so, my character got a crow. So I started running around, still 1 crow. Ran to a gen, got on it, got the 2nd crow. 5 seconds after getting 2nd crow, all crows vanished.
So seems there is a delay to getting rid of them, where as I thought it'd be instant. Or that as soon as I start 'interacting', I at least wouldn't be able to get another crow.
I do think its way too easy to get a crow now, I mean I was standing still for only a few seconds and it took much longer to get rid of the crows b/c of the 'interacting' rule.
8 -
I believe there's a confusion with the wording - you won't get crows until after 60s have passed. They do not appear immediately at all, so you need to have not been progressing the game or within range of the killer for some time before you get any AFK crows.
-11 -
Not trying to sound argumentative, but as yet we've not seen one video where players have received crows through normal gameplay - we've not replicated in our tests, nor on our own games on Live, nor have our Creators. That's why we need this video , we need to see the lead up to when crows were gotten. Without having some hard evidence that there is a problem here, we are very limited in what we can do.
-16 -
I actually had this happen to me yesterday - I had to take a scenic route around the map for a save and ended up getting crows. It was the only incident I recall happening since update but maybe the timer should be toned down based on how many people are alive. I saved, healed and started working on a gen and somehow I ended up getting level 2 crows but they went away immediately after.
To fully explain what was happening - most of us were injured and the killer was occasionally checking on hook. I had to walk around the map to get a better angle to line of sight the killers view just enough to give me time to save.
If it happens again I'll record a video - I admit I forgot to clip it because I didn't think much of it in the moment of playing and more focused on trying not to die.

People are complaining on Steam and showcasing how awful the new AFK system is on tik tok with constant vids of it literally punishing people who actually are trying to play the game. Not only that, but then the introduction of the penalty for "going next" directly rewarding tunneling Killers, is completely asinine on BHVR's part and exacerbates one of the biggest issues DBD even has, which is tunneling Killers.
The afk system needs to be removed and put back to how it was originally and the penalty for "going next" needs to be removed with hook attempts brought back. BHVR needs to stop trying to force people to stay in matches through punishing game mechanics and should start making the game actually fun to play.
We wouldn't have any of these issues if SWF and tunneling/camping Killers were balanced out accordingly with and emphasis on actually making the game enjoyable to play. Also FNAF needs to be killswitched, how this Killer got released in this state with all the game breaking bugs is absolutely astonishing.
10 -
Why was it deemed necessary to begin marking players as "AFK" when they are actively playing the game? There are myriad reasons why someone wouldn't be on a gen for a minute at a time (multiple expose perks, killer instadown powers, traveling across the map to unhook, slugging for the 4k, just to name a few).
Why is this intrusive system considered an improvement when 99% of the time, the only situation where "excessive hiding" occurs is when 2 survivors are left alive with multiple gens uncompleted? Why not have this system active only in that situation and disabled once either survivor is slugged/hooked (to avoid further encouraging slugging for the 4k)?
16 -
I’ve been on TikTok, and I don’t see match videos there either.
If this is really happening so much, then why is it so hard to find match videos? And by match videos, I mean videos that show continuous game footage, starting at least a few minutes before the crows started appearing.
Seriously, why can’t someone just link us to these videos?
-8 -
Before you killswitch the incredibly out of touch Afk system can you guys fix the messed up audio for survivors that use Springtraps cameras?
6 -
I'll say this as someone who has only been practicing Springtrap this entire update, AND I AM NOT SAYING IT ISN'T HAPPENING, I have yet to have a match where a crow has shown me a survivor's location. I have no idea if anyone is accumulating crows from my PoV.
I'll be practicing survivor today to see what the issues may be, probably even going to stream, but I can say SO FAR, I haven't had it be a boon as killer.Edit: Can see the community hates even suggesting gathering evidence of it. Y'all realize I'm on your side right?

Because disabling the system until 2 survivors are left makes too much sense.
5 -
So search it. Idc that you choose to lie. I've been presented with four videos this morning on my fyp in the span of like five minutes of players showcasing how atrocious the afk system is. It's not hard to find these videos at all and there's no shortage of people complaing about these changes. Here's another one that just showed up for me:
https://www.tiktok.com/@donnjaburn /video/7517462815876091191?_r=1&_t=ZP-8xL5KZPyJvr
Idk who you're trying to gaslight, but redirect the lame attempt somewhere else, thanks.

Here’s one instance

THIS is exactly what I said in the PTB feedback!!! This system should NOT be implemented at the start of match. The extreme hiding that killers were complaining about was when there were 2 people left with multiple gens and they were hiding waiting for the other person to die. This is why I said the afk crow system shouldn’t kick in until at least 15-20 minutes into a match. An average match can last around 15 minutes and that gives time for people to actually play the game and use stealth, which is part of the game.
They have a server timeout limit of one hour meaning if the match isn’t over in an hour then the game ends. If there’s a one hour time limit already then What would be the big deal of waiting 15-20 minutes for the afk mechanic to kick in? That way it addresses extreme hiding in 2v1s and still allows people to play the match normally at the start.

Just so we're on the same page here…
- Before the video started, the person in the video spent a large amount of time not committing to any interactions that would remove AFK crows.
- Then the person went to a generator, but decided not to commit to repairing it.
- Then the person went to a teammate, but decided not to commit to healing them.
- Then the person ran to a hook, but stopped before getting to the hook, even though they only had 1 crow, and they still could have unhooked and healed their teammate, because loud noise notifications don't happen at 1 crow.
What part of this video are we supposed to be angry at? Are we really supposed to believe the killer was going to interrupt them repairing a generator, AND the killer was going to interrupt them healing a teammate, AND the killer was going to interrupt them unhooking and healing the other teammate?
And why is the first half of the video missing? This person started getting AFK points a while before the video started, and that is important too.
-4 -
So at no point were they afk and were at worst playing mildly inefficiently. And you think this is a successful system that should be punishing the player? Just wow...
9 -
- Like I said before, we're still missing a large part of the video. The video should have started when the person first started gaining AFK points. But we're missing that entire section of the video.
- Do you really think tapping a generator should reset AFK points to 0?
-6 -
I think being arbitrarily marked afk mid match while clearly not afk and traversing the map, while the entire team is still alive is a problem.
8 -
I think I managed to get what would be considerd normal gameplay.
some things to note though
Wesker Had Thrilling and Grim Embrace
Meg was the last stack of grim
I did not touch the eastern gen because of Thrilling
I could not do any gen when Grim Activated.
Me and Sheva were second stage and did not want to trade with meg; or farm her for that matter.
I know the crow did not make a big deal, but considering I feel the play I did was nessesary it feels like I should not have gotten one. This is more for education purposes, because I had a tough time not forcing the crows.
I know it's long, but I feel it paints a better picture, if you guys have any complaints feel free to discuss what I did wrong me as well.
9 -
Some people are just going to defend anything and will gobble up whatever slop BHVR throws their way, just the way it is lol The vid showed two afk crows being acquired after tapping a gen, half healing a Surv and then going to unhook while evading Kanaki and all the person can respond with is "Why didn't see prior gameplay" lol
9 -
The same reason is with the anti Camp Meter. They include nearly everything except this. Same with No way Out. You will getting crows No Matter what. They make a band aid solution or fix which is more unhealthy for the Game instead Healthy.
PS: and again they didnt fixed the Bugs from PTB.
3 -
Perfect video to see this happen in real time.
I don't think you did anything wrong here either. And it's similar to how survivors played against me yesterday, so now I wonder if the survivors I faced did get crows, but I had no indication of it from my end.
Regardless, this is exactly what I needed to see, and you shouldn't have gotten a crow in this case.6 -
Thanks for taking the time to share this! And believe me, this clip is not too long - the length helps give a bigger picture idea of what happened. Let me pass this along to the team. Also, thanks to those of you who shared the TikTok's above. We're also reviewing those.
5 -
The mechanic isn’t trying to detect if someone is AFK, it’s trying to detect if the player is committing to meaningful interactions.
Yes, “AFK Crows” was a poor naming choice, because it implies it’s supposed to happen to AFK survivors.
I think a lot of the confusion is happening because they are called AFK crows, and people are expecting to only get them if they are AFK.
-8 -
The semantic argument you make here is nonsense.
The entire mechanic is designed to reveal the survivors location to the killer. There's literally nothing in that clip that is "idle", and the actions are absolutely "normal gameplay".
Why should the killer be getting free Intel on survivors during this? The system is set up to heavily punish people for playing the game.
This is literally, exactly the kind of thing that "killer mains" cry about constantly on this forum: being punished for no reason, giving the opponent something "for free", and "deleting entire play styles" by removing not just stealth, but any attempt to be sneaky or even just "not seen" by the killer.
It's overtuned bullshit. Period.
10 -
The system is beyond the lowest levels of stupidity and bad decisions….and it doesn't even work properly to boot.
I have acquired crows WHILE BREAKING a totem…..and while making a run across the map to unhook someone…..
8 -
This is a good video. I think the issue is the player is clearly being chased for a while, but because the game didn’t consider it a chase, it didn’t remove the AFK crows.
I wonder if the AFK crows can detect chases better, because I really think the AFK points should have been reset when the killer was clearly following the player for an extended period of time.
Also, I still think AFK points should be paused if a generator is blocked.
-1 -
Who asked for this is what I want to know. I have 4K hours in this game and play both sides but play killer more. In all those killer games I would say I have had maybe 2-3 games where the last two survivors were hiding and doing nothing and 1 game where all survivors were playing hide and seek the entire game, not touching a single game. It's so rare. Being able to abandon as killer when this happens is a great solution to that - which you already have in place.
This? It's punishing people for not doing anything wrong. The old AFK crow system was fine. It needs to be reverted back.
11 -
They probably called it "AFK Crows" because if they had called it "Draconian Normal Gameplay Compliance Crows" people would have immediately recognized it for the nonsense that it is.
13 -
Nah-ah. There is people breaking / blessing totems and they got the crows. Alsooooo, there are people who have been chased by two or more gens and got crows. So… system is not working.
5 -
I have been on the lookout, but since Tuesday I haven’t gotten a single crow. Not from hiding, not from blessing or cleaning a totem. I have tried it all and tried to push the systems limits but nothing.
I’ll keep trying.-2 -
Likewise, just about to say the same thing. Currently streaming and trying boon and stealth builds to try and force it more.
Unsure if I can share a stream link to show here, but my twitch username is Voidlines.-3 -
Thanks I will check it out.

DbD is supposed to be a horror game, which should allow some stealth. Theres times I've gotten Crows for lurking nearby because someone brought killer and is looping near what I was doing (a great example is shack generator). Or new players, like my friend, who still find the game scary and are more weary. She does stuff but definitely takes her time. They cannot fix all complaints because people are people. These changes feel like an unneccesary overcorrection.
Here's my hot takes:
1) Go next needs to be scrapped. I stand by a better option is give people 2 or 3 set chances to 4% on first hook, like before, but they do NOT take away you hook health state. Then after that you wait to be unhooked or go second. Or, more controversial, is let people DC without penalty. A killer they dont like or have a phobia? They're upset? They can leave and we get a bot. I would say improve survivor bots if this happened. Right now you still have survivors throwing fits because they can't die, which hurts the team. Not having 4% is harmful, especially when no one is unhooking that's your only chance. People already have said for a long time "just DC so we can at least get a bot" but then they get a penalty. People would leave if they didnt and the game could go on.
2) The afk system needs to also be scrapped. I understand theyre trying to fix things but its an overcorrection of a non issue. They did a built in DC for killers after 10 minutes. Same way if we get slugged we can abandon. Both dont solve the issue but it's something. However this afk system almost nullifies the point of the killers abandon. If a survivor doesnt touch a gen they get crows and killer can find them. This afk system just punishes survivors, especially baby ones new to game. How are they gonna acknowledge they need people to play survivor more, especially in 2v8, then make these changes to alienate them? As someone who plays both, mostly survivor until now, "extreme hiding" isnt an issue. People need patience and if not use the abandon feature.
3) The mori change is diabolical. It takes away so many chances for a come back and for someone to get out. Unbreakable, adrenaline, tenacity, hatch offering, Entity being kind (my favorite kind of videos) - all gone because of this change. People who complained about waiting to mori are usually the ones who slugged, tunneled, and acted toxic. They can wait the little time it takes for us to die. Once again a change to punish survivors and "fix" a non issue.
6 -
Feel like a step in the right direction would be to pause the point gain on anyone who's running. It would help separate someone who had to cross the map to get an unhook or something from someone who is crouching behind a bush for half the match.
