Auto Recovery Toggle
Personally, I do not like the automatic recovery feature that was just added. I feel it dumbs down the game and reduces player agency.
Please consider adding a toggle in the settings to remove it.

the only time you would ever not want to recover automatically is because you didnt like a down and youre throwing on purpose which is horrible for the rest of your team. if you have a self pickup perk you still get to choose exactly when to activate it. no real agency is being taken away by this mechanic being introduced, its purely QoL

Dear BHVR,
When I said I wished that we had more agency in solo queue, THIS IS NOT WHAT I MEANT. I respect Brisingr's opinion, but I disagree that being able to throw and screw your team counts as "agency".
I just wanted to clarify. Thank you for your time.

I actually agree.
I think auto-recovery is much in the same ballpark as removing protection hits off of hook. There are times where the proper play is to limit how quickly you recover and when, just as there are times where you want to take a hit right off of hook. The idea that you would only do that to screw over your team or to bully Killer is more of the same BS we get every time that player agency is limited. And beyond that, what is preventing me from going AFK the second I'm downed? The game plays itself between the end of a chase and being unhooked now.
Granted, I'm sure we'll all get used to it as we always seem to. But I don't think it's a good change either.

I don't like the game doing it for me, I would prefer more agency while slugged, not less. Instead of this automatic recovery, personally I'd prefer it if it were a little more tactical, e.g.
- While moving or recovering you have normal grunts of pain.
- While staying still you make 30% quieter grunts of pain (3s stationary to activate).
Actually give slugged players something to do and play around. Doesn't have to be this, but things like this would be much more engaging.
That said the one thing I would like to automate is if I am recovering and a teammate heals me then let's go, carrying on my recovery without me having to.let go of the recicery button then press it again would be appreciated. I keep hold of the button subconsciously, and have at times forgotten to press it again to restart healing.

To clarify, I just don't like the way it feels. I have no intention of throwing or anything of the sort.
I asked for a toggle so that people who like it can keep it!

Thank you for the respectful disagreement, however I do not think auto recovery prevents throwing of any kind. If a survivor wants to throw by not being picked up, all they need to do is hold the sprint button.
One strategic downside to auto recovery people may not realize is that it removes the ability to communicate to a teammate that you don't want to be picked up. When there are only two survivors remaining, not recovering signals to your teammate that the killer is baiting a pick-up and you'd like them to go for hatch instead.

While I honestly can't think of many situations where auto recovery is harmful strategically, I do agree with you that BHVR has made many decisions that dumb the game down, and it's something we should definitely avoid if we can.
I'd even consider the struggle on hook change—where you hit skillchecks instead of button mashing—as dumbing down the game, as it reduces the variety of mechanics. I personally hate button mashing, so I don't mind it, but it's something to think about.

You can actually use the slug recovery to avoid getting AFK crows in Trials if the Killer slugs everyone and you crawl away.
The auto-recovery feature removes that.
There are times you aren't throwing, but your teammate is about to neatly secure a 4K for the Killer because the Killer is hovering over your slug and plans to down anyone who tries to rescue. Not recovering at all can signal to your teammate "DO NOT APPROACH", but guess what? That's gone now too!
There are actually situations and circumstances were you don't want automatic forced recovery, and frankly, having the choice taken away from the player feels really bad, because now, in those rare situations where you do not want to recover for various reasons have been taken away from you.
I get it may not seem bad if you've just come out of a game where a teammate seemed to be throwing cause they just don't care to play this match, but auto recovery isn't going to magically force those players who are trying to throw to suddenly play the game. They'll just find another way to throw.
But forcing players to recover actually does take some choice and some game plays away from the player. It's not good. It should be a toggle, like it was previously. Now it's not. That's bad, because that's a loss of player agency and choice under the guise of "forcing bad teammates to actually play the game". That's not gonna happen. So all you're doing is removing player agency for no reason, and it feels bad.
If folks wanna use it, more power to them! But forcing players to auto-recover does absolutely nothing the devs actually intend it to do, and just takes away valid plays from people. It's not actually helping anyone or anything, it's doing the opposite.0 -
the only reason i dont like the auto recovery is because veru often people get downed and they just afk. if they are not moving and not recovering i know they are afk and not to bother going for the heal. auto recovery could mean when i heal them that last bit they just stand there afk and i put myself at risk for a player that isnt even playing. sort of makes me want to help my team even less when i dont know if they are afk or not.

Killer Klowns did this thing where whenever you're dead, you play mini games to help the team. It wasn't super successful, but I think something akin to that could work in DBD. Hitting skill checks on hook or while downed give little player buffs to the other Survivors and if you choose to spectate after dying, you could do more of the same. It'd be a neat idea and at least give us something to do.
