Are challenges from tomes autoselected and completed while you play?

I didn't play for a long time so there is a lot of tomes to do for me.
Do I need to select an active challenge after each game like we used to have to do or do they tick when completed automatically like the things from main menu quests?

Bonus question: Do any of the tome challenges actually award iri shards?

    You still have to select them from the Tome, so you can only work on one at a time.
