I miss the horror aspect

I kinda like how dbd is going, but I miss when it was scary. Now it’s more arcadey/comp.

The game stops being scary after playing it for about 10 hours. Better to lean into the thing that has longevity.

That is somewhat truthful, but the horror atmosphere has disappeared once they removed the fog and darkness from the maps.. Reworked Coldwind Farms (now they don't feel as „cold“ as the name suggests with the sunny weather), and overall improved the visibility and allow players to see each other across miles away.
Back then, that was only possible up to like 30 m at max, and that's without the Reagent offerings that changed it.. Or Moon offerings that got retired aswell.

I'd love some weather changes, even if they are tied to offerings.

Adding rain, fog, pitch black night (even to Coldwind Farms and other day maps).. Oh, how would that improve the game to me and all, but I get it.
The hardware requirements would've drastically shifted upwards, making the game unplayable for those who're not on PC and having up-to-date hardware despite the graphics still being what they could be, eh..

Let's not even talk about the other effects, such as destroyed pallets no longer keeping the broken wood on the ground and having the Entity cleaning it up, or generators actually showing visual indications of being damaged or the sparks doing some changes to the ground.
Or.. Upon getting hit, the clothes of the survivor getting ripped off or even torn out based on the weapon, hook, etcetera.

Oh, how I would love to see those changes, but then again-

There comes the hardware stability becoming the challenge, and even worse, the censorship as ripped clothes could potentinally.. You know what I mean.

That wouldn't be Dead by Daylight anymore, I suppose.

Horror games stop being scary past the first few hours. Old DBD was no exception.

I've never really considered the game to be "scary" even since the beginning. The game was certainly darker, the killer was certainly deadlier, but it was still just a pvp game that happen to have a horror theme, Kinda like playing aliens vs predator online.

What i miss was the speed of the rounds. Used to be if you got caught only once you were likely alredy dead. And could move on to the next round. Now in order to get the same result of you dieing quickly, the killer has to go after you and you alone making it feel personal, and all your extra chances being taken away. Game did not feel that personal back then for some reason.

There are a lot of naysayers, but it all went downhill when they added anime and Kpop. Nobody would've bat an eyelash at Junji Ito, but everything else? You can write it as "disturbing" as you want—it's still out of place and it shows. It's also around the same time they really started playing into fanservice, which also kills the horror vibe.

Granted, all that being said, I would love things like a Scooby-Doo collab and I think FNAF was a good addition. Call me biased, but I don't believe those IPs kill the vibe.

It's still so crazy to me how decent the models look in Left 4 Dead 2 versus the game they originate from. 💀

I think if you want to pinpoint it to characters, the moment they brought Nicolas Cage into the game was the moment where it was clear that basically everyone can join the cast of characters, as long as it brings BHVR money. Because this was probably the latest points where something does not need to be Horror anymore to be added.

I still get jumpscared often, like I was mid chase with one killer and Wesker zoomed in with no TR from off screen and I screamed lmao

Or when I play without headphones sometimes on my steam deck I get jumpscared too. Horror is subjective, there is a lot of horror aesthetic left in the game, I just think a lot of us are desensitised to it. I feel what makes DBD so popular is it is an accessible horror experience (in terms of scares).

Like I showed a relative it once and they were made really uncomfortable by the hooks and the hanging etc. It really is just subjective IMO

Some maps also are just more horror focused than others, like Midwhich Elementary, maybe it's just the unlicensed maps which are missing that horror feel.

I think it would be cool to add weather and time of day modifications to maps. It’s all RNG which you will get, could be foggy, could be stormy, could be bright and sunny, could be late at night or early dawn. Obviously this wouldn’t really change indoor maps much, but maybe the lights could flicker every now and then or something.
