Why do flashlights exist?
They're too powerful.
Whoever says they aren't obviously hasn't played killer enough.
You can't even break a pallet if you're not billy or nurse, if you do you risk losing the survivor, even window vault is risky.
Also flashlight saves shouldn't exist. You get punished for downing and picking a survivor up...
If you're gonna reply "jUsT LoOk uP" please don't.
I've heard enough of survivor mains.

A survivor blinding you at a pallet is wasting time they could be spending putting distance between you.
More than half the time survivors attempt to blind me when I'm picking up a survivor, they fail. And there are many counters.
You need to get good. Flashlights used to be instant and a nightmare. They've been heavily nerfed and more counters introduced.

Watch this. Before you respond to anyone.
They used to be so much worse.
They're almost useless now without someone following trying to save. Look towards a wall when you pick them up. If you see a flashlight drop immediately. If its STILL a problem, run lightborn.

Flashlights don't make you deaf, you can still follow survivors when you are blind. Survivors leave scratch marks as well which you can follow to find the survivor and if there are no scratch marks they are obviously really close and you can probably find them in 10 seconds. For flashlight saves you can just face a wall and if there is no wall then try to bait out the flashlight person or slug the survivor if you are paranoid.

If survivor footsteps were consistent, I wouldnt mind flashlights at all, since I can still hear them through my headphones. But since the devs ######### up sound (again) some patches ago, and refuse to fix it, being flashlight blinded can you actually cause to lose a survivor, if they play it correctly.

@drunky26 Flashlights are actually the worst survivor item.
First off, they are only "really good" against Wraith, Nurse, and Hag who have weaknesses to the light. (See "Lightburn" and "Phantasm Traps".)
Second, they have several counters, first off, facing a wall almost completely prevents blinds.
Also, ears! Footsteps and grunts can help you track whoever blinded you and almost entirely negate the blind.
As for pallet blinds just bring Brutal Strength. Or Franklin's Demise, or Lightborn, or Overwhelming Presence.
Finally, the blind can only occur if a survivor is near you, that means that they aren't on generators.
Overall flashlights are a lackluster item. I get that they can be annoying at times but they're not nearly as good as you think they are.
Besides, they nerfed them after South Korea.

Flashlights to powerful? Lad, are u stucked in 2016? It's 2019, flashlights are nowhere near to powerful as they used to be back then. Especially after the pick up buff you need to be a braindead killer to get blinded.

Flashlights are worthless if the killer has ears. They really aren't that hard to beat.
4 -
Iron will exists.
3 -
So do footsteps. And Stridor.
I follow people that flashlight me at pallets when they are healthy. Just look ahead and figure a path that the survivor will most likely take. Probably to a pallet or window. If they run back into the spot you just were well that pallet is gone so they can't loop you.

Sound bugs also exist and seem to come around fairly often. I'm surprised you didn't know about that, since there's so much discussion on the subject.
1 -
Look at a wall.
Look for a survivor that might be ready to make a save that is standing close by before blindly picking someone up.
In other words.
4 -
Wrong. Footsteps dont exist anymore on the killer's side. They nerfed it.

this has to be bait. whoever thinks flashlights are even slightly strong isn't good at killer. work on your tracking if you can't follow a survivor while and after being blinded. flashlight saves dont punish you for downing and picking up a survivor, they punish you for not being cautious

I get blinded by flashlights sometimes, just look away. They're only annoying when an entire team uses them. If you can't find a survivor in a chase if they flash you, you may need to practice killer chases more or watch some guides on chasing.

Flash lights dont annoy me really, i mean yes i get blinded, some think then they can go towards me and then go about me.....but mwahahah i am onto them....i cant use them really, i mean i try as a surv but i am not overly good, practicing though

On a serious note: If they don't have Iron Will and they blind you at a pallet while injured they are most likely gonna die. If not injured - why aren't they injured yet?
For flashlight saves - Take note who has a flashlight before hand. And expect them to be following you (aka not doing gens) to try to save their buddy. And looking into a wall or Fire Up (yes freaking Fire Up) or Lightborn can mess their timing up. Hell even scaring them off and turning around gives you enough time to pick surv up

They increased killer pickup speed & they also created perks to counter flashlights. They're not really that strong like they use to be. Most killers (good killers) will look at a wall or tree or anything that blocks the survivors from flashlighting them. Flashlights are only decent to blind a killer at a pallet while you're being chased, but like I said most killers (good killers) will follow the sounds you make even while blind and still down you.

Broken Key?

Flashlight exist because its dark out
1 -
Killers cannot use audio to track survivor's movements.
Killer audio is trash and you cannot distinguish individual sounds.
1 -
Well hes talking about flashlights in general so you cant compare flashlights to one version of a key.
1 -
From a gameplay standpoint, as a taser. From a realism standpoint? No idea. No map is so dark that it requires a flashlight.
1 -
This is very accurate, I used to hate the 2s insta stun, white light of death kind of flashlights, pallet ones aren't that bad, old DS + flashlight combo by another surv was more trash than anything now. I haven't really had a problem with flashlight blinds since it was changed from insta white blind. I've also been blinded twice while EW3 and actually managed to get hits still with judging layouts/sounds prior to the blind. Flashlights are nowhere near as powerful as they used to be.
1 -
Every single time I try to flashlight save, I fail, so waste of time and least priority for me to master as a survivor.
0 -
I've had so many times where the survivor COULD have just ran while I was breaking a pallet, but instead blinded me. I would always just hit them while blind, it's so funny

Real question is: Why thing like Iridescent head, Frank's mixtape and other stuff exists. Flashlights can be annoying and used just for the toxicity factor... but at least they're extremely situational and difficult to use for what they were actually created for: Flashlight saves.

@drunky26 I play both killer and survivor and flashlight are possibly the weakest item in game. You can also use sound to find their location as well, or put you in the right path.
If you know someone has a flashlight, do a quick area check if in the open. The timeframe to get a flashlight blind has been decreased already so it is still quite hard to pull off.
As someone who has played countless hours as killer, toolboxes are the strongest item in game.

The flashlight exists as the only item (sans firecrackers) in the game that has interaction between killers and survivors. They serve as a tool to broaden the gameplay of DbD beyond find objectives, complete generators, avoid killers, and loop killers. Sabotaging used to be a part of this at one point, but the developers decided that no solution other than gutting that mechanic was good enough.
Unfortunately, a flashlight's charges are currently too few to be used to simply brighten dark places, which is something I would like to see in the future.

This feels like a bait post, not gonna lie. However if you do actually think that flashlights are the most overpowered item in the game, then you obviously have not played this game for very long.
The flashlight USED to be the most powerful item in this game (insta-blinding). HOWEVER there are now so many counters today that make flashlights next to useless. Flashlight saving is VERY hard today, since so many people know how to dodge flashlights (looking up, facing a wall, etc.). And perks like Franklin's Demise or Lightborn making it even harder or border line impossible.
And if a survivor blinds you at the pallet, then that just wastes the survivor times in getting away, if flashlights are giving you such a hard time, then at that point it's just your problem.
