Why two separate survive lobbies?
There's the Survive with Friends one, where you can invite people, and the Survive on your own one, where you can't.
In both lobbies, it only starts looking for killers once everyone has readied up.. So why not just ditch the one on your own and keep the one with the invites?
There's probably a reason behind this, but it would make it easier, since you get booted to the single player survive lobby after each "with friends" game, and you have to back out and in again to invite..

Yeah exactly, part of why I wonder why they are two separate game modes when in the end it's all the same.

Maybe. That would be the stupidest reason ever though haha

Only thing I can think of is avoiding the invite players screen you have to cancel out of in SWF if you intend on just playing solo.

They could just not have that pop up automatically, and require you to press the + button to send invites.

True, but if they can do that, surely they could also have SWF groups retain themselves without having to reform after every match.

I think they use this redundant feature to keep track and collect numbers how many people play solo and swf. Just a guess, maybe just technically not possible to change till dedicated servers drop.
Maybe @McLean can enlighten us, he knows pretty much everything about DbD.

I think I heard about dedicated servers keeping groups together after a game, but yeah.. Honestly, having two menus isn't the issue for me, it's having to back out to the main menu to switch modes to invite that bugs me.
