Why doesn't BHVR block certain words in post match chat?
By now a great portion of the playerbase has been subject to horrifying insulting language, and while there is a reporting system in place I keep wondering... why not also block certain words from being used?
I know this won't entirely stop the behavior or people from trying to use them, but I just feel like not blocking certain words by default is almost like enabling people to use them.
Just my opinion after playing older games where this is a feature, and honestly just made it a little bit less of a toxic community.

Because people need to stop being snowflakes and thicken their skin. It's just words. We don't need language policing. People should be able to say whatever they want to say.

Because the system does nothing and even blocks non profane words..besides..its just language..report them and move on

In R6, this went poorly as people started asking for others to answer "What is Eric Cartman's super hero name in southpark: Fractured but whole" and answering it resulted in a ban

It is, yeah. Their censor autodetects things and stars them out. But when you can’t call your character a knight without getting censored...in a medieval fantasy game...

And yet oddly enough the very forums we are currently communicating on have all kinds of rules on what kind of behavior is allowed. Why do you suppose that is? Allow me to answer my own question. Because rules for communication are required for civil discourse to exist. Insults and swear words offer no benefit to anyone and only lead to hate and anger.

How exactly does the limiting of certain words which should never be used affect your ability to say what you want to say? This isn't the first time a game has censored certain words.

I am on board with this. I mean, I personally don't see what post chat is for... I've hardly ever seen anyone actually say "gg". Even when I play fair as killer I get the "ggez" , so it's just like what is it for? lol

This isn't about blocking the entire chat, it's about post match chat etiquette. I don't think asking for a select number of words that shouldn't be used is going to affect anyone but the person who often uses it.

Never said that they didn't. Just because they do, doesn't mean it's a good decision. It was just simply their decision to make.

No, we did not say "rules for communication". What was referred to was blocking words. Those are very different things.

This is just simply not true whatsoever and even if they did, free speech is much more important than someone getting angered by the words you used.

This is the argument I see from people who think they have the right to be as abusive as they want to others. The person who is being abused is in the wrong. Maybe the abuser should just start being a decent human being. . .

There are certain words that will get you a ban for using them, if the other party reports you. I'm simply saying block those specific words. How does this directly affect you?

I agree... please block foul language. I don't really enjoy it. I don't know if I'm in the minority nowadays, but that's what I prefer.

Not minding what people say to me and preventing someone from being able to say what they what are two very different things.

I'm not saying that there aren't. The question wasn't what BHVR's rules are. The question was asking "why not also block certain words from being used?". You were asking the community a question looking for an opinionated answer.

Just because I may not choose to use cuss words doesn't mean I personally think they should be blocked. I believe in freedom of speech. I think someone should have the right to say whatever they want to me no matter how mean it is.

Maybe it's another issue of a software thing? Kind of like how people want built in comms but they've said several times it isn't a thing they're able to do, unless they said that about something else.
They have this feature on the forums and it would be nice to have it in chat. I am seeing a lot of people who have seen this in other games talk negatively about it, probably because of how unintentionally hindering it is. I myself have been censored and temp banned on here for certain words.

Being offended by insults is not being a 'snowflake' it's just that people think they have a right to stomp all over someone for the sake of being a piece of poop.
Trash talking is different, if you say something mean then you should face the consequences. Not the person you're attacking and if you think "oh my behaviour is ok because this guy is a snowflake" then why bother saying anything at all because it's only your actions which lead to the 'snowflake' being affected.

Personally and in my opinion, yes.
That is not how the game is or will ever be, but simply what I think myself.
I'd rather be offended by something very bad said to me than to take away that's persons freedom of speech to say it. I value freedom a lot and that's just my opinion.
Now that does NOT include calls for acts of violence. That is an exception I would not include in freedom of speech.

Ok well then I respectfully disagree.
Having been through enough bullying in school when I was younger, I can definitely tell you that some words hit people differently. No amount of Freedom of Speech is going to make it ok for me, when I know that someone else is being subject to those words.
Which is the reason why I brought it up in the first place. Freedom of Speech doesn't mean be mean to whoever you want to be using those words.
This is a PvP game and I get that at some points either side is going to disagree with each other, it doesn't mean that the devs should just let people use whatever words they want to use.
So we can agree to disagree.

The only tough thing with policing this is when it's highly subjective like "mean". How far would that go? A lot of people would consider different things mean. I think more focus would need to be on intent rather than how the person being offended took it. So something you might find mean for example, I might not find as mean.
So like I'm american indian and what if I found it mean/offensive for anyone to where feathers as I think that relates back to my heritage. Do we now ban all costumes from ever having feathers? Yes that's an object not a word but I could also apply that to any american indian root word ever to be used in the game. You see what I mean? This rabbit whole could go on and on and on to where we are left with nothing and living in a bubble world.

I'm glad that you aren't abusive to others and I apologise if it came across that I was accusing you of that. But you should be aware that's the kind of argument abusive people make. It has major undertones of victim blaming. Just be careful if you don't want to be misunderstood.

I don't personally think advocating for freedom of speech has undertones of victim blaming though at all.
Misunderstandings are part of why I believe in freedom of speech. When we start restricting things there will be someone, somewhere that will find something wrong with anything since it's a very subjective matter. Rules based on subjective matter is a very scary place to be in my opinion as it is a very slippery slope that doesn't really have a definitive end and can be manipulated quite heavily by whatever party may be making said rules.
Anyway I know we have differing opinions, I just enjoy theoretical conversations like this.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but you can press a button to close the chat and then never see it again.
While I am not on board with harassment and I think players should always be reported for racist or hateful chat, broad censoring of words or phrases is not going to stop anyone. Maybe have a profanity filter, a la most online games, but it doesn't need to go further than that. That's where the reporting system comes into play.

While I understand what you're getting at, you're also not playing with the most civil audience. You play in a competitive mode, and in competition people tend to lash out. When it happens in sports its called passion. He's right, we need to stop being a society of snowflakes and get over ourselves

Because it doesn't ######### matter.
One, if someone insulting you because you won actually gets to you then you really need to toughen up, you can't take things to heart over a game.
Two, no matter how many different words and variations they try to ban there's always a way to get the word you want to say across. It's not worth the effort of TRYING to ban a bunch of words when they're going to get around it anyway, may as well just ban the people as they do.

Nah.
Why? Because not making people dance around a block or filter makes them type the words straight up. This makes it easier for whoever handles reports to catch it. Let people say whatever, if they can't handle their actions potentially having consequences and getting them banned they've simple abused that right and get no sympathy from me as they agreed to the rules of the game and then broke them.
And that's without getting into how no amount of blocking or filtering will stop people. There's always a way to switch out letters and get around it, and it does nothing to intent. If you see one of those silly lines in Overwatch you know that the person actually typed "gg ez" for example, it only works if the player on the recieving end is unaware of the filter in the first place.

I know, didn't mean to imply you wanted that sort of Blizzard-tier chat auto-moderation and I'm sorry if I made it seem that way.
I still believe it's better to let people type it, especially when bannable, as then it's easier for it to be punished if reported as it's very black and white. No room for "I didn't mean THAT!" or anything like that, but at the same time give players better options to moderate chat on their own end.
I wouldn't be against a clientside toggle in the options menu that did what you're asking for at all though, as I believe that giving players the tools to tune their own experience how they want it is important.

All you have to do is literally click the double arrow icon beside the chat box and the chat is closed (both killer and survivor) forever or until you click that arrow again.
So yes, their is a button to turn off the chat.
*General Statement - Not Just Meant For The Person I Replied To*
If anyone is that sensitive to what is said in that box, you need to grow up or turn off chat.
If it's against TOS, take a screen shot and report it. That person WILL get banned if you provide proof. If that is the case, follow through and take pride in removing trash people from our community instead of getting upset about what you read. Better to punish the guilty than to try and take away the rights of all because of a few. You will be commended for taking out the trash and you will be condemned for trying to take away personal rights. Chose wisely.
