Pallet Wasting?

All right so I was playing Custom matches with some friends, and I am fairly new to this game, but I know the mechanics well enough. And while I was playing, Whenever the killer would be near I would throw the pallet to stun them. Most of the time it would hit, but they said I was wasting them. I thought the whole time that was supposed to be the point, you stun the killer, they chase you, and your fellow survivors were supposed to do gens. Could someone explain to me what I'm supposed to do with the pallets then and to try not to waste them.

You're doing fine, especially if you're new. If you're getting stuns, that slows down and potentially irritates the killer. If you are running and wait at a pallet just so you can get a stun, some people say that's wasting it. But as you get more experienced, you will know how many times you can run a killer around a pallet before you have to throw it down. Search "pallet looping" videos on YouTube, just play the game organically, and through videos and in game experience you'll be a pro in no time. (:

Whether a pallet is "wasted" or not solely depends on your team's capability to hold down M1 on generators.

If you and your team are not afraid to do generators, the only time a pallet is wasted when you get hit as you throw it down.

However if you team just crouches at the outskirts of the map, or does totems, chests, etc, then you are better off squeezing more time out of every pallet. Use windows whenever possible, loop the pallet multiple times, do bolt moves like baiting the pallet drop, et cetera, et cetera. Because you will need the limited ressources later on in the match.

I always wondered, if you throw down the pallet and you still get hit, but the killer is stunned, is that intentional or lag.

Good to know, cause a lot of times it would seem that the hitting animation would not fully be completed before I went down.

Its intentional. By design the killer is not stunned at the beginning of the animation, but when the pallet physically hits the killer (looks more or less right, depending on the size of the killer).

They're telling you that because you have a limited amount of pallets you can use. Also, there are safe and unsafe pallets. Depending on which type you get, you can drop it right away and go to the next one, or you can stay there for a while because it's "safe". The killer has a choice to break it or try to mindgame it which will waste a lot of his time if he tries doing that to a safe pallet. Sometimes, he'll eventually catch up if he gets bloodlust or if the loop you're at is halfway between safe and unsafe, but either way, always have an escape route because you'll eventually need to move on.

Once you get good, you won't need to drop every pallet you come across, sometimes, the RNG is so good that you can skip every other one, which makes it good for the next survivor that needs some protection. If you play long enough, you'll be able to identify these areas, and it also helps knowing this if you play killer too because it's that type of info that tells you when to break chase because the area is too strong.

You should really watch some survivor videos on Twitch or Youtube to get a better understanding, then try it out with your friends.

First of all, you are correct when you say that one Survivor needs to occupy the Killer in a chase, while the other 3 have time to do Gens.

However, Pallets can indeed be wasted:

First when a Pallet is thrown super-early, when you just throw it without looping a tile (running around it, keeping line of sight on the Killer and mirroring his movement). While you need and have to use Pallets in order to prolong your chase, Pallets are a limited ressource on the Map. A broken Pallet will not be available for you or any other Survivor. This is something that splits the REALLY good Survivors from the good Survivors: The amount of Pallets used in a single chase. A good Survivor might use 4 Pallets to go on a 2 minute Chase. A REALLY good Survivor combines multiple Structures and/or Windows together and maybe onle needs to use 1 Pallet.

Second, a Pallet can be wasted when you get hit through it OR when you throw it directly after getting hit. You have a Speed Boost after the Killer hit you, which can give you a lot of Distance to get to another Loop. But if you decide to throw the Pallet after getting hit, you might get the Stun, but the Speed Boost is wasted and you did not use the Pallet in an efficient way. This is basically the best scenario for the Killer: Getting a Hit and a (strong) Pallet gone.

This is something that comes with experience, I would say. If you notice that the Killer is swinging and you think that you will get hit most likely, dont throw the Pallet. On the other side, it might be possible to save Pallets, just by observing the Killer. If a Killer respects Pallets (happens at lower Ranks, the Killer does not want to get stunned and backs up when he reaches a Pallet), you do not need to throw it, you can make another Loop. Other way around would also be possible, the Killer is going for really ambitious Hits which most likely will not hit at all - by not throwing the Pallet, you can get another Loop, because the Killer has to recover from his Lunge and he did not get a Pallet Drop like he wanted.

Of course all of it is highly dependent on the Killer, a Killer can also respect a Pallet one or two times to trick you into being over-confident so he gets a Hit the next time.

Here is a good video regarding Pallets:

In general, OhTofu has a lot of useful guides to check out.

If you're in a chase, better to take the down then continue dropping pallets, easy for killer to tunnel you if you drop every pallet, if you loop a killer and use your pallets wisely, killers are compelled to go for other survivors

Stunning a killer with a palet doesn't mean you didn't waste it! Let's say the killer is 25 meters away from you, and you are just camping that palet waiting for the killer to come to you, that's defenitely a waste even if you stun them.

The proper way to go is try your best to waste as much TIME as possible around a resource before you use it up. If you're full health, try to take a hit instead of using a palet, that way you get your boost and run to the next tile (wasting more of the killer's time). One other thing, try not to use palets that are next to each other, that way you avoid having dead zones.

At the end of the day, you can play however may seem correct to you, but you got 3 other teammates that are also gonna need palets, so...

As long as your team is doing gens, pallet wasting is a myth. As long as you waste the killers time it doesn't matter.

Don't worry too much about it as a new player. Focus on learning where pallets and vaulting spots are located on different maps more than trying to jump straight to optimally milking pallets as much as possible.

Try to avoid "camping" pallets as a start (running to a pallet and waiting for the killer to catch up to stun them), if you have distance between you and the killer you can try running even just 1 time around the loop or even straight up running to the next tile instead, make the killer actually have to catch up to you to get a chance to swing at you.

The rest will come with time. It's great you play customs with your friends, it's a great place to learn maps and practice chases. If they play in the way where they try to loop pallets as much as possible before dropping them like many experienced survivors do, try playing killer against them and see how they play. You can learn a lot about this sort of thing by trying to catch people that are already doing it 😄

But all in all don't worry too much about it as a new player. It's much more important to have a solid grasp of the maps and their layouts before trying to use their individual parts as well as possible.

They may think you're wasting pallets if you're simply running from one pallet to the next to the next without looping it or using windows to extend chases because you're not playing as efficiently as you could.

You should try and 'save' pallets where possible, hence loop jungle gyms where possible, loop the shack window and sometimes test the killers at pallets. They may 'respect' it giving you another loop around the pallet (if the loop is small enough). A good perk to test killers like this is dead hard.

Good survivors only use pallets when they absolutely have to. For example, if there is a window next to a pallet and if there is enough distance between you and the killer, you should always take the window first instead of waiting for the killer to come near the pallet.

This on another area but I'll say it again people refers to as pallet wasters Can Be The Killers best friend or the worst enemy

That solely depends on just how efficiently the others are doing generators in essence you can waste a lot of the pallets on the map but if there's one or no more generators left then escape is pretty insured.

As a killer you can't really mind game a 'pallet waster" they drop the pallet and move on when you're dealing with these people as killer you have three choices

    1) Break all the pallets and continue the chase. Whether this is effective or not is solely dependent on the other survivors on gens. However you can have perks that will cut down a lot of the work like brutal strength and the enduring Fury combo

    2) Leave the survivor be and go find different people.

    3) ignore the pallets and continue The Chase. This tends to leave you with a crap ton of pallets and you'll either have to waste time clearing them out or the other survivors can use them to their advantage

Absolutely untrue. Use pallets when you feel unsafe. Once you learn how to loop decently then save them as long as possible. I'd suggest though OP trying to prolong chases as long as possible, which is something you just pick up as you play. Good thing it's customs because he may get some not friendly teammates who will misguide him.

The rule of thumb is to loop around the pallet if killer is far enough. You should focus on wasting killers time as you get a lot of points for long chases anyway.

Mindsets like this are what destroy the team, if it's going to be your first hook, you rather down every pallet then save it for lategame? I run alert all the time just to see which pallet my teammates has dropped just so i can plan my route, what about those who have no clue and ran towards an area that you have basically just down all pallets? Smart survivors know when to take a down instead of trying to drop unnecessary pallets

You definitely could have gotten more use out of the pallet if you looped them instead of waiting for the killer to get near. Dropping pallets like they're nothing will screw over your team pretty badly in the long run so try to use them as efficiently as possible by looping around the pallet then throwing it down instead of waiting for the killer to get close.

I mean... if you're camping pallets, or you run to one and barely put 1 loop into it, then you're wasting pallets. If the killer is good you might need those pallets later, especially if they're doing this at safe pallets early game.

If your team do gens fast the amount of pallets you throw down is irrelevant since the goal is to waste the killer's time and since the majority of maps have a ton of safe pallets and loops exist you could theoretically run a killer for 5 gens

If you're waiting at a pallet just to stun the Killer then it's kinda a waste. You can run around the pallet to waste time as the Killer gets into range to hit you and then stun them. This gets you more time value per pallet. Pallets are your main source of defence against the Killer so you want to get as much time out of them as possible.

@Aven_Fallen posted a good video summing it up.

He said it's customs so there's really no risk involved. Even in publics what I said works if your team is doing gens. Think about how many pallets you leave behind in each game

If you're throwing down pallets while the killer is 30m behind you AND you are trying to complete the tome challenge of throwing pallets nilly willy, then it is not wasted

Hit checks don't seem to be instantaneous. If you m1 and spin around, you seem to be able to cover a wider arc of attack. One way to deal with those 360s - do a 360 yourself when you swing. Works for me so far.

don't wait at a pallet for 20 or so seconds waiting for the killer, make the killer need to run in a straight line towards you (of if you can go through windows/vaults to make him waste more time) until he is semi close enough that you need a pallet, then find a pallet and either use the loop to conserve it AS LONG AS YOU CAN SAFELY. if you need to drop it immediately DONT BE AFRAID TO DROP IT if it will prevent a hit, you don't need to loop every loop 3 times to then be WORTHY of dropping the pallet, some of my LONGEST chases have been because I just drop the pallet when I need to not to get the stun and I just keep running until I need the pallet

saving is importent for end game.

Usually i dont drop pallets untill im am 2 stage depending on the map.

Wasting pallets is when the killer is respecting the pallet or if it is like 10 seconds in the game or if havent done like 2-3 gens yet but it depends alot of killers dont know how to run a pallet most of them respect it.

Also i killer is like 20 meters away from you
