Why are we forced to buy DLC's to complete the battle pass?
I was looking at the battle pass which I brought last time around, I was hoping the grind would be a bit less. The problem is I don't have spirit. Seeing as completing all the Tome challenges doesn't get you to max tier if you so much as don't have 1 DLC you basically are not going to reach tier 70.
I think if you do not have a killer you should be able to do a "longer" task on a normal killer. For example if you do not have spirit and cannot do the "Hit after phasing challenge" then you should be able to do a substitute challenge on any killer such as get 16 Iridescent emblems.
I get that BHVR want to milk us for all the money we have in our wallets but I personally will not be buying the new Rift pass because unless:
- Completing all of the challenges unlocks the entire rift (If you do every challenge why aren't all the tiers unlocked?)
- There are substitute challenges or "dailies" where you can earn rift fragments to make up for challenges to can't do if you do not have a DLC character.
At the moment it isn't too bad as you can unlock Spirit and Doc with shards but what happens when the Tome is centred around a licenced killer? Are we expected to buy that on top of the rift pass?

Also funny enough I thought they said the first couple of rifts would strictly be free character wait nevermind lol

You do not need to buy any DLCs to complete the Rift. Any characters needs to complete the challenges are available in the store via shards (Auric Cell only characters are not required), and any perks needed for challenges can be bought in the shrine for shards as well. In the event that a DLC perk is required, it will be guaranteed to appear in the shrine at some point during the Rift, typically during the week the challenge is added or the week immediately following.
The short version, in response to your concern about an Auric Cell only character being required, everything you need will be available for shards.

Does this mean there will never be a Pig animatic?!
T_T

So what will be the situation if you decide to make a Rift with the 'Auric Cell' characters? I get that due to most (if not all) of them being licensed that their lore may be more difficult to tell, but does this mean they will never be in a Rift? If they will, how will the OP's issue be prevented?

Thanks for answering this I was very concerned about Licenced killers being used without the ability to buy them with Shards. My only suggestion is if there is a DLC killer/survivor challenge there be an optional alternative challenge for those that do not own it so that they aren't forced to spend their shards to complete the rift pass. Either that or the daily rituals give some sort of XP/rift progression.

So this means we will never see licensed characters in the archives even their perks?

I meeeaaan.... you dont have to spend real money..... just use your iridescent shards

That would be truly alienating people out of the rift so idk. Maybe when they run out of original killers to tell lore about lol

Honestly devs you should do it like Team Fortress 2 with its contracts in the pyro update. Like when you start a contract with a weapon that you don’t have, the game will lend you the weapon to complete the challenge. So my idea for DBD is when you start a challenge like survive the trial as Jane Romero for example; the game will let you use Jane with her 3 unique perks at tier 1 and only her 3 perks. No other perks or items can be used unless it’s a part of the challenge. Once the challenge is complete you cannot use Jane anymore unless there is another challenge for her. The same can apply for the killer side of challenges, like if you don’t have Spirit, the game will let you use spirit with only her 3 unique perks at tier 1; no add-ons or other perks unless the challenge involves a specific perk for that killer with only the tier 1 variant. This will allow players to earn those fragments to make the most of the free or premium track of the rift before it closes and for lore without being locked behind a pay wall but if they want to level up use other perks and add-ons they would have to buy them.
Thats my idea anyway I think it’s beneficial for both players and devs. Players will not be stuck behind a pay wall to get fragments or lore but will not be able to use the character fully. It’s like splinters in offerings but a little bit different. And it’s better just in case players don’t have any shards at all to purchase the perk or character before the rift ends, face it not everyone has time to play this game everyday so they wouldn’t be loaded with thousands of shards.

You can watch the Saw movies to learn about Amanda’s (Pig) backstory. Without spoiling, Saw 1 - 4 explains a lot about Amanda’s past (if I remember correctly).

In fairness I wouldn’t say it’s milking.
Some of the dlc for this game is ancient. Spirit came out about 16 months ago and most of the dlc for this game is often on sale for dirt cheap.
If it was a new killer you needed like Oni or Demogorgan then yeah I could understand but its not like DBD is one of those games that expects you to buy $30 dlc to make progress.

Not everyone is rich with shards, 9K per character(Spirit/Jane) just to complete 2 challenges is not fair and completely insulting to the people who just want to complete the level, they shouldn't be forced to buy a character with their hard earned shards just to complete 1 level from the tome, I presume the other 3 levels have these character specify challenges as well this means that anyone who doesn't own these DLCs will ve excluded from getting the rift fragments and BPs.

I mean honestly battle passes are usually for veteran players as an added bonus for them to keep them playing regardless so it really isn't for casual or newer payers regardless. Plus shards aren't hard to pile up just don't spend them on crap. I average like 1 to 2k an evening playing a few hours. So it really shouldn't be a problem to get her if you want it that badly ya know?
1 -
How are you leveling up so much in a few hours? Just curious. Because if you are new you have to hit 46 just to hit 9k the first time

Playing Killer, luck in having fast lobbies, and keeping game length to around 10 minutes.
Shards are earned though devotion. You gain devotion XP though gameplay time in matches to a cap of 10ish minutes per game. So the more games you play and the closer you are to 10 minutes per game the faster you can earn shards. Playing Killer is better for this due to how Killers need to play throughout the entire game and wanting to drag it out somewhat. Survivors run the risk of early death or working gens to fast, both cutting game length down for worse devotion XP gains per game.
I can't say I earn 1-2K a night, never bothered to track, but it roughly fits my own gameplay in how often I can earn 2k for the shrine even though I don't really play that much in a week anymore. Someone who puts a few hours a day should be able to earn a fair bit of shards before long.

You aren't forced to do anything unless you want to.

Amount of Shards needed to buy a character: 9,000
XP needed to earn 300 shards: 4200
9000/300 = 30 levels of shard grinding to get a character
30 x 4200 = 126,000 XP to grind one character
XP needed to earn one Rift Fragment: 800
126,000/800 = 157.5 Rift Fragments
157.5/10 = 15.75 Rift Tiers
In the time it takes to grind out the shards for one character, you can get 15 tiers of the Rift done. For this Rift, there are 3 characters that require having been unlocked to complete the Tome. Assuming you'd need to grind for all three, 15.75 x 3 = 47.25. You will literally be able to grind out almost five-sevenths of the entire Rift just to earn the ability to complete the Tome. Between Survivor queue times and short matches, imagine how long it would take to grind out that much XP. By the time you've gotten even two characters, there probably won't even be a Rift anymore.

You aren't forced to buy them to complete the battle pass. And other games, like Apex for example, have challenges that can help you complete the battle pass with characters you can buy with in-game currency, just like DBD.
0 -
I think they should just unlock them when the challenge requiring them is active, then re-lock them afterwards. Seems simple enough. Any progression you put on them will save but if you want to continue playing them afterwards, you have to buy them.

My problem with this Rift is, even though the characters you need to get can be unlocked with Shards, that's still 27k Shards you need to spend (Spirit, Doctor and Jane). That's a whole lot of grinding. Personally, this game doesn't offer enough gameplay to grind that much for 3 characters. The only reason I probably play this game as much as I do right now is down to The Archives, but even then it gets tiresome. I understand no one is forced to buy any DLC characters in order to complete the Rift, but the challenges definitely help and back to my previous point if you want to do that you're forced to purchase these characters. It's clear that these challenges were implemented into the game to tempt players to buy these characters with real money so they don't have to play the game to earn Shards. Also what's to stop the devs from implementing challenges throughout this Rift that includes more than the 3 DLC characters so far?

There is a question everyone needs to ask themselves.
Is it really worth it to complete a rift?
A tome lasts for an infinite amount of time. You can still work on tome 1 to earn its BP and lore. So having stuff locked behind shards you need to grind for doesn't mean much when there is no time limit on finishing a tome. You have till the day of your or DbD's death to finish a tome.
The rift on the other hand. That is limited to 70 days. And that is what you should be looking at in my opinion. Tome 2 will help in unlocking rift 2, so having the DLCs will in turn help with that. But if you don't care about rift 2. Then why the rush to finish tome 2? Just do what you can and sooner or later you will find the DLCs worth buying (on their own right or another reason) or simply unlocking them through shards over time.
In my opinion. The rift nor tome shouldn't be your deciding factor on buying DLCs. You should want to buy (through cash or shards) the DLCs on their own right. Tomes and rifts are just added perks on top on that.

I will just say this (mainly becuz im tired of people complaints on battle passes) You dont need those chars to complete it...just play the game.
0 -
But people are saying it's relatively more realistic to actually complete the Rift if you do every challenge. If you don't, it's very unlikely you'll earn enough fragments quick enough to reach tier 70.

On the previous rift i had finished it and still 18 days left...

I personally think Tome missions that require a DLC character should work a bit like the contract system in TF2. In that game, beginner-level contracts can be tasked to the player that requires a weapon or item they may not have, and said item will be gifted to the player until they complete said contract.
I think it would be totally fine if selecting, for example, a Spirit mission in the Tome would allow you to play as Spirit for as long as that Tome as active an uncompleted. Completing the mission or selecting a different one disables your ability to play as Spirit. Similarly, doing a mission that requires a Perk you may or may not have will immediately lock that Perk into a random slot on all of your characters until you either beat that mission or select a new one.

Better idea. Instead of going through all the work of doing that, adding odds of something breaking as we all know will happen in DbD.
If you don't own a character for a certain challenge in a tome, the game gifts you a one time deal of 5 splinters for him/her. Like how the game worked before adding the cash shop when your blood webs had odds of getting splinters for DLCs you don't own that let you play as that Killer for a single game.
Gives people a chance to complete their tomes without a pay wall feeling. Gives people a taste of playing other Killers/Survivors so they might be tempted to buy them. And it wouldn't take that much added work compared to your idea. They'd need to add a splinter for all the DLC Survivors as well as Killers and have them give their 3 perks by default instead of going perkless. But if the system is already in place. Why not use it?
1 -
Gonna be honest, I have the feeling that would break the game just as much, if not more, knowing Bruhaviour, especially when the system was already questionably functional as is (I really loved when I would get the smoking splinter for Freddy IN FREDDY'S BLOODWEBS).

Lesser of 2 evils. If either choice isn't good, you gotta go with the least bad one.
0 -
Except I highly doubt your option is the lesser evil. We've clearly seen that BHVR can easily unlock Killers for people who didn't buy their DLC in the form of the PTB; it shouldn't be too hard to replicate.

I wanted to see if there is any opinions on this and glad I found this discussion thread.
Before the tome was released, I got Poised from the Shrine of Secrets. I thought to myself that we can complete the tome without buying any characters and that we can do it with the perks given in the shrine if we don't have them already. So the challenges would be based on character perks and not using the characters but I was wrong.
The tome released and you need to own The Spirit and Jane Romero to complete. I already got the Spirit when it came out so thats not much of a problem(for me). But now I spend 2000 shards on a perk so that I need to spend another 9000 on a character that I will only use once (to complete the challenge).
So I tried a refund for the 2k shards I spend on the perk from SoS but obviously that got turned down. I said that I could get the 2k back....and then spend 9k and get the character. But that didn't happen.
Now I don't know if I want to spend 9k shards on a character that I will never use again and I probably won't so sadly for me I won't have the tome 100 percent completed.
I like the idea with survivor splinters and I think there could be alternatives in order to allow players to complete the tome without buying characters.
(Also the discussion subject should be changed and refer to the tome because you can complete the rift without getting the dlcs.)

Bhvr is expecting people to do way too much grinding then i've played this game for well over 200 hours and i've only earned enough for maybe 2 or 3 dlcs worth of content, there just shouldnt be killer mandatory challenges or if there are make it so its only one per rift and make that killer free for the duration of the rift.
0 -
They are not mandatory. The challenges which require a DLC character can be completely avoided. You do not need to buy them in order to continue through the Tome.
I do understand the criticism, and it is fair, but we either have to limit ourselves to the handful of free characters (which would get stale), or open it up to all the original characters. We do our best to make sure that anything you might need is available while the Rift is active by putting those characters on sale and adding any teachable perks you might need to the shrine for a week.

You can avoid these challenges but you can NOT finish the tome without. I understand spending shards to get certain perks and use them in the challenges but spending shards on characters that you won't ever use again is not ok. Maybe put the characters on shards discount (they are 9000 so anything would be welcomed) or as said above make some splinters or let people use the character 2-3 free times to get the challenge done.
For example I got 2 out of 3 perks of Jane from the Shrine. So I spend 4000 shards already and now if I want to have the tome 100 percent finished, I have to spend another 9000 just to get a challenge done. That's not fair.

The DLC isn't bad price wise if you're just looking at one of them.
If you want them all? It really adds up quickly. With more coming every three months.
The game is twenty bucks. Stranger Things is twelve. Hag, Doc, Clown, etc. are all seven. Even if you exclude cosmetics, it adds up.
According to Steam, it's over $120 for just the DLC but that includes stuff like the soundtrack & the cosmetics like Head Case.
You might not need to speed real money to unlock something for the Tome but this game is following in the footsteps of the rest of the video game industry & trying to nickle & dime the customer base to death. I mean, any game that has like four different in-game currencies feels like lunacy to me but that seems to be the norm anymore.

I own everything so it doesnt matter to me but couldn't we get limited time splinters in the web that are only there for the time the tome is open and dont cost 7k BPS.
Then like the last hallows event, disable them in inventory.
1 -
I just bought Spirit
0 -
that would be perfect. i mean i buyed every chapter but this idea would solve the problem for the challenges and people which dont own them still have the opportunity to complete the tome
0 -
They should cost more than 7k to compensate for using a dlc character. I like the idea of splinters and at least opening this just for the event. You spend BP and you don't get stuck with a DLC character that you will never use after doing the challenge.
