I watched the Q and A so you didn't have to...
Question. Something something game another something balance thing unfair something unfun?
Answer. Soon.
To be fair to BHVR I get that you can't answer a lot of questions, but you pick the questions, maybe pick some you can answer.
EDIT: to be clear, this isn't me trying to booli the devs or anything, I fully understand why they can't answer many questions. However, I do think they could do better at organizing their questions so the stream isn't 90% Soon and 10% answered questions.
To be more constructive my suggestion would be to do the following
If you want feedback on a good way to handle this, take the questions you can answer or provide something more then soon. As to the ones you know you can't, why not have a Q&A post that basically says, here are the most popular questions asked that we don't have a solid answer for and provide a 1-2 sentence answer that basically says soon.
This way, your Q&A video can be more then soon, like not trying to be mean, but I really only counted like 5-7 answers that were not soon. But you are not leaving all of these other questions hanging out in the air. People are still getting their soon answer, just in text. It really shouldn't add much of a work load, as the page can be created as you are creating your queue of questions for the stream.
Lastly, this has the added benefit of providing "more" information to your player base, even though its still basically soon.

I appreciate you wasting your 30 mins so i didnt have to waste mine

Or you could mention what are you working on, what ideas were rejected and why, etc.
1 -
Not going to lie, to see the ideas they rejected would be interesting. It at least tells us what they aren't working on.

Heyo, opening this up for feedback and adding some context: The reason why we end up with a lot of "Soon" answers is because we take the most upvoted questions. In the past, we've cut questions that we aren't able to definitively answer, but we received a lot of complaints about skipping and dodging questions. Of course, like you've mentioned, some things either aren't planned or aren't slated to be released any time soon.
Our POV is that even if we aren't able to give the most satisfying answer, it's better to acknowledge the things people want us to talk about most than stay silent on them.
Genuinely, if you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for how this could be done better, please let us know. I'd be happy to change the way we do things for next time, but it's a tricky situation since there's a balance between taking the questions people want to know the answers to and picking the questions we're able to answer to.
28 -
Just can the streams if you don't want to be insulted, no matter what you do your gonna be criticized.
5 -
If they pick only questions that they can answer, people will complain they are avoiding questions.
On the other hand, they can't answer anything properly because the devs work at 10% speed.
4 -
Well unless I missed it in some twitter post I haven't heard or seen anything about the ddos issue and was hoping that it would be in the Q&A.

@Peanits I was being mostly sarcastic because I understand that you honesty can't answer most of the questions.

Maybe pick the questions that can be answered, then just have a slideshow with pages filled with all the questions where the answer is "soon" that can be flashed up for 30 seconds at the end.

How you going to steal a man's thunder like that.
GBKaru is probably working like crazy right now to make this exact thing
3 -
At least theirs will be useful.

These sorts of events are the definition of lose/lose. If you don't say anything, people will assume you are avoiding an issue. If you do say something, people will try to poke holes in it.
I'll be waiting for the full transcript though.

No worries, I can tell there's no ill intent behind it. Thanks for the suggestion, it's something we've considered before, but it's worth reviving. We try not to break up information too much (e.g. answering only some questions on stream, then sending people to the forums for the "not so satisfying answer" list) since a lot of people aren't going to follow through on that, but it's definitely an option.
5 -
im really tempted to can it halfway through and just stop trying to do anything useful for this community because honestly im not in a good state of mind right now and ######### happening here is making it substantially worse.
4 -
Okay. An example:
You talk in general terms about organizing perks and a different way to select and organize them and offer zero specifics about what you're looking at. You say you don't want to be made liars.
Why is this a concern? You've paid lip service to being transparent and honest before. Do so. Simply be open with what you are experimenting with, with the caveat that it may not happen. Be honest about it. I know you think folks can't handle it, but I assure you people will tell others that nothing was finalized and to cut you some slack. Give it a shot. It'll go better than you expect.

I can honestly say that I wouldn't blame you

To be honest like others have said can the streams because to be honest it's not helping. I understand you guys went with the upvote method but that puts trust in us and sadly there are more trolls and players that DONT want things to become balanced because that would ruin THIER game. I saw good questions and suggestions in the Q&A section that got down voted while others that WE as a community know would get the usual "Can't Say Much" or "Soon" answers.
You guys put too much faith in us and when good ideas are posted it seems nothing is said about them or they get blasted into oblivion.
If you still want to do a Q&A then you should just find ones that CAN be answered on and let the community know that you understand the want for answers but you guys can't comment on anything that's in future plans.
1 -
That's really unfortunate. I hope that things improve, I always enjoy reading through them as the QnA's are always during a time where I'm at work.
0 -
Where is the link to the Q&A?
0 -
If you can't answer the questions I think a post of "these questions were most up voted but we can't answer" would be good. You acknowledge those questions in a post while spending more time on questions you can answer on stream.
2 -
I am not going to lie, there isn't ever a win. I know my suggestion isn't perfect either, but it feels like something has to be done about this "soon" meta. If you don't mind me asking, was the only reason you didn't attempt this method, as you said you guys thought of it before, was you were worried about people not reading the forum post?
Either, way, I hope you guys think of a way to avoid this in future Q&A, because I do actually enjoy watching them, it's just disheartening to feel like I learned nothing.

Sorry things are rough bro <3
3 -
Oh. Oh no.
Your work is appreciated immensely and shall be reimbursed with many cows if so desired.
(Really though, if you really think it's better for you to step away then by all means do so.)

Early game collapse has been cancelled. Have we had daily posts about how we were told something was happening and it didn't work out? Nope.
Have we had 2 weeks solid of people unhappy with how poor Q&As are, only to get more of the same? Yes.
Which is worse feedback and PR?
0 -
Definitely not the only reason, no. There's other concerns as well, like by relegating those questions to the forums, it could appear like we're trying to bury them so people don't notice (coming back to the dodging questions assumptions). On different note, written posts are great to a point, but not many people will want to read through a massive Q&A list of not-so-great answers. To give some perspective, this most recent Q&A would be 15 pages in written form, and that's considering that a lot of these answers are in point form notes. It's easy to pop a stream on in the background and listen while you're doing something else, but only a small fraction of people will read through the whole thing.
3 -
Another thing id consider is the content in the stream.
Sure people come to the stream for the QNA, but also for other content (eg: Circle of healing nerf, BP codes). If there were a sneak peak to upcoming content, or even something that is almost finalised (such as perhaps a legion/BF change). Somebody coming from the stream wont think of it as a lack of content stream if something people want was teased.
Also, you should propose a change to the stream, and probably do a poll. Kinda like what happened with the DS/OoO stream. See the general reaction to chat if a certain change was implemented and to streamers who analyse the change more and share their opinion (of which is more valid due to a higher skillset).

Is there a real summary of the Steam somewhere?

This was such a grinchworthy and unprofessional behavior and it gets worse every time
1 -
If you guys can't answer or give a good answer for something. Take 30 seconds, acknowledge the problem, acknowledge the frustration, acknowledge that it's being worked on, and move on. If most of the show is no comment or working on it, you're wasting everyone's time if ur making us tune in to a multi-hour dev stream where the only takeaway is We're nerfing CoH.
1 -
There is one on Reddit: https://old.reddit.com/r/deadbydaylight/comments/s8rzb8/summary_of_every_point_mentioned_in_the_qa/

Pretty sure @GoodBoyKaru is working on one. Its kinda his shtick.

BP code idea for the next Q and A : Soon™
0 -
soon. im 30 minutes into the stream
3 -
This is a good point. We do try to reserve some reveals and news for segments on the stream to make sure that there's always something to turn up for (e.g. Circle of Healing, Lunar New Year event teaser), but it's tricky because saving news for a stream means not mentioning them sooner.
The other thing that we've been hoping to do is have more segments about various topics. For example, a talk with a level designer & level artist about what goes into making a map. These would be a lot of work to do, but if this is something you'd be interested in, please let us know. There is also a slight catch here in that some people simply don't care about these segments and would rather we just get to the questions.

Unrelated - I love your stache

Specialised streams sound good and interesting, but I can't imagine they'd be a positive experience that would continue for long.
While some tidbits would be interesting, the vast majority of the community won't care so much about the process of making a map, they'll just be there to hear answers to "why doesn't Trapper have a power on Eyrie?" "Why are maps still being made so massive when so many have had to be shrunk down in the past?" "Why RPD?"
0 -
I kind of wish you guys would do a separate dev stream where you focus on specific topics. It'd be nice to tune into a stream where you focus on aspects of the game outside the Q&A. Those answers that are shortened for time would probably do well on a stream that wasn't in a Q&A where you're trying to answer as many questions as possible in a certain amount of time.
0 -
It's definitely an option to do specialized streams, they don't necessarily need to be a part of a Q&A. We've experimented in the past with a stream on hit validation (back when it was first announced), and we've even tried splitting off Q&As into a YouTube series where we take a few questions that we're able to answer fully and go more in depth on the answers.
4 -
Didn't watch the stream. Did they explain why they love so much nerfing killers that don't need to be nerfed?
0 -
I remember the hit validation one and really enjoyed it. I like those ones where you guys have gone more in depth explaining mechanics and decisions.

So that's why the Circle of healing change wasn't mentioned in the dev update. Got it.
I can't speak for the community, but I'm sure anything to do with balance with have a good amount of people interested. I've asked Almo before and he says the perk designer is a nice person (or people?), so map design (layouts, upcoming changes, reasons for certain actions), perk design/balancing, killer design/balancing are topics I'm almost certain lots people are interested in especially with the people that handle that kinda stuff.
I'm also interested in the lore of the game, but lore has always been a "you love it or don't" kinda thing in the community. A mix of most subjects would be ideal for a stream, but it sounds like an absolute pain to plan and actually do.
This stream was good especially with the questions you chose. Personally I'd rather have lots of hot questions like the SBMM questions be answered with "soon" (like in this stream) than the questions avoided for less asked questions.
1 -
@Peanits Why not just open a thread with the most asked questions from previous Q&A sessions, such as questions concerning facecamping, BT, tunneling, etc, and give the answers given there. Then pick brand new questions.
Much of what this Q&A was about, was just rehashing previously answered questions with more 'soon.' If you direct attention at a thread post that has those answers, and acknowledge you have nothing further to give on that, it should save up a lot of time to answer things that don't get much attention.
2 -
if someone else said it, do this instead. pick answer you can answer on stream but at some point in the QA have a section were you go here are the most upvoted questions we cant answer at this point but will be able to in the future...... and then list off the questions in a video or a pdf that pops up.
1 -
For Circle of Healing, no. It was never intended to be part of this update. Any time we release something, we have a waiting period where we let it settle before we make any drastic changes to something (unless it has a blatant issue, e.g. healing faster than the Killer can hit you). For Circle of Healing, that waiting period was coming to an end, and these changes normally would have been part of the next major release. However, since it's such a hot button issue lately, we pulled some strings and squeezed it into this update instead of leaving it for another ~6 weeks. Normally we would have preferred to have it on the PTB first, but given the timeline, that was not an option this time around.
(But I can second that for the perk designer, he's a great guy. Though not everyone's comfortable going on stream, understandably.)
2 -
funnily enough i read your comment at that point
Here's what I got from it.
2 -
So, to be clear: if killers perform poorly at low levels, but do well at high levels (like twins), they're fair game to get nerfed. (except Nurse for some reason)
If killers perform well at low levels but do poorly at high levels (like Freddy), they're ALSO fair game to get nerfed. (except Bubba for some reason)
So basically there's no internal consistency and things just get nerfed randomly and for no reason. Cool.
... Anyway, assuming the Reddit thread is semi-accurate, this is actually exciting MaybeNews:
- ...potential new gamemode, working on testing split queue times with SBMM and how they impact it and , “there is always a chance * wink *”
The balancing is a joke, the maps get worse every rework, the killer experience grows worse and worse, SWF is the only way to play survivor anymore, and QoL improvements are somehow the most difficult programming tasks ever attempted. But discussing giving DbD a DIFFERENT game mode without immediately shooting it down?
That.
That is news worthy.
1 -
I can confirm the Reddit thread was accurate.
1 -
Instead of directing people to the forums perhaps you could have a slide at the beginning and/or end of the stream listing the questions that can't be answered at the time.
0 -
Why do you ask for us vote for most popular question if you dont answer it? my question is literally top 15 https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/304658/any-chance-for-new-maps-for-old-killers#latest and i watched that live for that, and, nothing, but "felix shirtless when" oooohh hell yeah, we can talk about that. Boring
