Do devs ever ban players for insults in chat

There is a strong and established belief that devs never bother with banning people for says horrible things to others in post game chat.

Often they will outright say that there is no punishment and that this is ignored so they can insult as much as they want.

Is this true ? Are only rare cases responded to like if popular streamers report someone so they act on it ?

I assume insults count in the thousands daily and that devs just gave up on it.

I think a certain number of insults are permitted as "regular endgame chat salt", and will not result in a ban.

However, chat harassment that is racist, ableist or threatening in nature are reportable and might result in a ban or a strike.

Basically, freedom of speech applies here chat bans as far as i know are only accepted when threats are involved. While I've never heard of anyone being banned for calling someone a B!tch i suppose if that player is a repeat offender, they may be punished for it but this isn't a school playground so it's not as necessary to enforce. You can only do so much but ultimately in the online world its required to toughen up your skin so as to not feel so brittle hopefully I don't come across condescending or arrogant I am just someone who has been insulted enough times that I am almost immune to it. Just remember words only have power as long as you keep giving those words weight and players getting banned for what they say wont discourage the behavior it will only add fuel to the fire.

yes we do ban for in-game chat infractions. There's a sliding scale where the ban starts off as temporary and works it's way up to a permanent ban, however one or more parts can be skipped depending on the nature of what is said and a permanent ban can be given instantly if the situation is severe enough to warrant it.

Does your system register such things automatically or is still a report required

I think I've heard that most salt and toxicity is allowed but threats and slurs are not.

Although i dont know how much toxic can you get as the filter really censors like half the vocabulary.

I cant write words like "think" or "business" without being censored.

Yea I do wish it was more punishing.

Take LoL for example, which is 1000x more toxic than this game's community. I remember I was playing a QP game a few months ago and I was trying to learn a new hero, which I was doing horribly with and my score was reflective of that. Some teammate decided to start insulting me and hurling personal attacks, even wishing my mom got cancer, etc. I finally replied and asked why he had to resort to personal attacks instead of just playing the game, since it was QP and not as serious as competitive. Thats why I was playing there.

Sure enough, he doesn't stop and he just gets worse. We lose the game. Upon score completion, I reported him for toxicity and lowering team morale, etc. Get out of score/match completion and I'm hit with a 14 day ban instantly.

Even though it wasn't justified at all, it was immediate because of the auto ban system they have in place. I don't think it was justified since it does seem like it can be abused, but thats a 14 day ban as my FIRST one (I stopped playing entirely, even after the ban was up). DbD should definitely improve their punishments for toxicity, if they want to curb the end-game chatters from blowing up on people. And its mostly the ego andys who run an SWF and lose.

This is interesting, because I had someone evade chat filters to say the n-word to me in post game chat, I followed every single step, yet the people who contacted me said that they were sorry that I encountered someone "potentially breaking" the rules and apparently did not ban this person. I can show you the report if you wish.

I was also told that I wouldn't be informed of any punishment, but I absolutely do NOT understand how spamming racist slurs in 2022 does not get you immediately and permanently banned from whatever you're using slurs on.

(And I KNOW this person wasn't banned from the game, they don't have a ban on their Steam account.)

Verbal abuse in chat usually leads to a temporary ban (unless it's death threats and similar) and that doesn't show up on their profile, only permanent bans show up as game bans.

Yeah, so, cool, but let me repeat what I said: How does spamming racist slurs in 2022 not get you immediately and permanently banned from whatever you're using slurs on?

I'm afraid I do not make the rules, I was just explaining how your assumption that "they have not been banned" is wrong, because temporary bans do not show up as mentioned already.

Alright, fair. Admittedly, when typing out my original comment, a temporary ban had crossed my mind but I had failed to acknowledge that. Thank you for your time.

You didn't technically say PERMANENT ban, so I'm right. Oh, and sorry about the racial slurs or whatever

Imagine how an actual employees time is wasted on watching videos, delivering punishments, over people who can’t handle ignoring people or pressing mute. Or they could just actually fix these issues in the game. Cheating and harassment are largely due to the game being boring, on top of the mismatched matchmaking, this game is only a shadow of its former self.

Honestly seeing people having meltdowns in post game chat is kinda depressing and laughable at the same time,,your life must really be in a terrible phase or you are a really sore loser to be absurdly toxic over a video game,,Personally unless it's something racist or faqed up i wont report even though i probably should

I would argue that a person who feels like a game's flaws in any way, shape, or form are the motivating cause (much less justification) for being verbally abusive to another player should stop spending money on games and start spending it on professional help.

I'm not even joking, because that is one warped way of looking at things. If experiencing some bad matchmaking or tepid gameplay makes a person feel like they just have to lob some slurs/insults around, a long, deep look in the mirror is in order.

Cheating and harassment aren't results of bad game design (especially the latter, I can't get over how insane that logic is).

When faced with a game that is flawed to the point of being unenjoyable, most rational people will simply play a different game, not abuse their fellow players (which just makes everything worse).

Additionally, the burden is on people not to behave like scumbags, not on people to not be bothered by abuse, or to actively avoid it. Rather than admonishing people for not jumping through hoops and avoiding social corners of the game deftly enough to dodge abuse, how about people just not behave like pieces of crap? Is that bar simply too low?

I don't participate in chat, but no one should have to disable it to avoid actual abuse. Racist/homophobic/xenophobic slurs should be met with permanent bans on first offense. Zero tolerance.

Do you ever plan to have a chat report for pre-game? I've seen instances where someone just says toxic / inappropriate stuff and leaves before the game starts but there is no way to report them. I get people will say get thicker skin etc which quite honestly it doesn't bother me on a personal level but I'd rather not share a game with someone who is encouraging people to commit suicide irl or alternatively advertise shady websites in chat and disconnect.

it's sad that in-game report is requirement :( I have a screenshoot of a guy death-wishing in chat (he was streaming, some new streamer, i guess?) and yet he won't receive any punishment for it, because i can't report him in-game (VOD is already deleted, so, only screenshot left)

An in-game report is always required as this flags the match so we can see that this match actually took place. Unfortunately with editing screenshots and videos being as popular as it is these days, this is the only secure way that we can ensure we're taking action on the correct player.

I know this is going to blow your mind, but the solution to a game being boring and having problems that you don’t like is simply not playing 🤯

    Question.

Let's say someone said a death threat to me in chat. When I report them, does the report log the chat history? Assuming it does and correct me if I'm wrong. Why would a secondary report of a screenshot be required? You wouldn't need to worry about people photo shopping and etc. because the primary in game report has hard proof which can't be modified.

Again, could be a misunderstanding. And I might not know everything that happens behind the scenes.

I don't know if people got banned who I reported for calling me (a German) a Nazi. Sadly this happens more often than you wish.

Maybe I will know in the future when we get feedback of in-game reports.

for chat offences you do not need to send in a support ticket as we can see all chat logs.

My quote is to the user who advised they hadn't reported in game and not necessarily referring purely to chat offences.

    Hi,

I have a small question on the subject as well ! I've run into a couple of players with hateful usernames, but who did not linger in chat. Does this call for a Harassment report (even if they didn't actually say anything in chat) ?

I remember being on the same team as a survivor named like a famous german dictator... my friend and I reported them, but a confirmation that reporting this is allowed and won't just crowd other reports would be nice. =)

    Have a nice day !

We do not handle player names I'm afraid - this is something that would need to be reported to the platform that the player was on.

I find it hard to believe that BHVR can't save a copy of the just-played game. Given how little data the program uses, it seems reasonable that it wouldn't take up a considerable amount of disk space. I don't understand why this can't be done. There's no reason why we should have to record our games to make a report.

why not implement an auto-ban system for certain words (like slurs)? I had that on a system I ran more than a decade ago.
