Does the rank system really determine your skill? Or is there more to it?

In my opinion, it does sometimes. But you do get lower ranked killers (Rank 20-13) That are really good players (Killer or Survivor).

But you as well do get some higher ranked killers and survivors (Rank 12-1) that also aren't really good.

But it could as well be the person they are playing as weather it be killed for survivor.

What do you think? Does the rank system really determine your skill? Share your thoughts on what you think all factors apply to a person's skill level! :)

no. it's harder to not pip than it is TO pip, and you could just play spirit or Insta saw billy up to rank 1. you don't have to be good to rank up

Thats a good point, I've managed to get all the way in red ranks because of a couple good days that contained lucky matches where almost double piped every match. Once that lucky streak was over though, I was losing almost every match which had caused me to get super toxic and angry.

My normal rank area is green or the lower purple ranks (11 and 9)(8 and 7). There was a big difference when my rank had gone back down.

    Thank you for the reply!

Yes and no. You're not reaching red or purple ranks if you're a complete potato. But, especially on the survivor side so much depends on who you get matched with. I'm a purple ranks survivor and feel like it's about right where I should be. I'm not a potato. But I'm not great either. Ultimately play time will determine more about your rank than skill will.

It's more of a "how much you played this season" instead of a "how good you are at the game" rank

In a broad sense, higher ranked players are typically "better" than lower ranked players, but there is a lot of variation within ranks. I'm probably on the low end of red rank killers. There are a lot of killers with twice or three times as many hours in the game as I have even though we all make rank 1 each month. The ranks only go so high.

On the survivor side, I've run into SWF players that have a high escape rate in groups and....not such a high escape rate when I run into them solo. I can rank up as a survivor simply by saving twice and doing a gen or two, but I'm not great in a chase.

Rank can be an indicator of experience more than anything else.

    Short answer, no

    Long answer, not really

  • I was red ranks last season's as survivor. Some killers were amazing and were so scary at predicting what my next move was. But then half the time I was getting killers who face camped. This is just my experience and it's different from anyone else's. But this also applies to the survivors as Well because some of them I was wondering how they even got past green. Oh and if you were wondering I'm on ps4!

More the speed to rank up and how long you stay at the actual "Borders" (which are Rank 4/8/12).

If you rank up pretty fast, you will most likely be better than someone who is at Red Ranks near the next Rank Reset.

I would say it's the other way around. Your skill determines your rank (to an extent). Good players will rank up, not so great players stay a lower rank. There's exceptions to this (emblem system edge cases, SWF, etc.), but it does stay generally true.

I know it's popular to say "rank means nothing", but there are people who get to a point where they no longer rank up. At the time I'm posting this, there's a thread on the front page of General Discussions of a guy who's having a hard time getting past rank 16. Likewise, there's also people who will tell you that red ranks are sweaty.

Rank isn't everything though. It isn't a perfect 1:1 reflection of your skill, but it's a nice estimate.

I'd say Rank is only based on two things, Skill or Playing Time.

I'm always Red Ranks as survivor because it's so easy to level up if you are skilled enough to do a gen, get a save and be chased for 2 minutes. It takes 30 pips to get from Rank 10 back to Rank 4 and honestly I probably only have to play 25 matches to get back.

Then the playing time side is pretty much because it's easier to pip than depip if your an average player who just plays alot after 50 matches or so you'll get there.

So to make a long story short there will be good players in Ranks 20-8 who just don't play much and then there will be below average players in Ranks 8-1 who play way to much.

    I wouldn't say rank = skill

I have been playing this game since late July and I have been red rank after my first rank reset, so 3 out of 4 months (the first one I was learning the game) so, after one month of knowing absolutely nothing, just studying the game and playing it casually (I work full time I can only play maybe 2 hrs a day, and not every day) will get you to red ranks.

I'm not a potato, but I'm not good either, I'd say I'm pretty average, but I did study the game (only the survivor side) so I know the minimum work I need in order to be safe or to pip, and I try to do it every match.

Just knowing basic things like how many gens you need to do per match to reach iridescent or gold, and how many hook rescues you need to do, and try to not get hooked and run the killer without getting caught is what will get you to rank. You can be a potato and do 2 full gens by yourself and rescue 2 players and heal some others and be a scaredly Dwight hiding from the killer and you will guarantee to pip.

On the killer side, I'm not sure, I main survivor. The only thing I can say is that yesterday I played against a ranked 2 killer in coldwind farm who couldnt keep up with a chase, she disconnected because she couldnt catch us... So only based on that match she was pretty bad at rank 2.

So tl;dr, being a red rank does not guarantee you have skill.

ETA: play time, at least for me, is not a factor to determine your rank, as I said, I can only play maybe 2 hrs every other day, and I still manage to rank red..

I'm thinking that play time can help determine your rank. Because I can't figure out why I keep ranking up and I'm still terrible at being chased. I can do everything else, but that. I do play a lot of hours though.

Rank absolutely does not determine your skill in this game. I've been playing DBD on PS4 since August '18 and have about 1k hours (aprroximately, based on average play time per day, since console doesn't log time spent playing). I've been a rank 1 killer and survivor every season with the exception of my first month. Here is my most recent story of how rank means *almost* nothing. TLDR at bottom.

Last week I was playing solo queue survivor. I solo queue about 90% of my survivor games. Playing on Rotten Fields and I start working on a gen. Ruin. No big deal. I always work through it unless I'm having a particularly bad RNG with skill checks. I see a survivor get hit on my HUD. Ten seconds later, he's down. I'm guessing it's a Spirit with recovery addons considering how quickly he went down. Survivor gets hooked. I'm still working my gen (about 50% now). I see a second survivor get hit twice in less than 10 seconds. I abandon my gen and go for the save. As I'm unhooking, second survivor gets hooked. I see Ghostface in the distance, not coming for the first hook. These guys gave a Ghostface four hits and two hooks in less than 60 seconds (nobody got exposed). How?? I get the second unhook. We try to double heal, but second hook Sprint Bursts away, in the direction I saw the killer going. I heal first hook. I get a second gen to 50%, another survivor down. I go to rescue this survivor too, assuming the others are looking for Ruin. I find it on my way to the hook. Get the unhook and break Ruin. GF finds me on my way back to my gen. He chases me for around two minutes, in which time one gen is FINALLY completed. I'm rescued and don't bother to heal. At this point I've accepted our fate. I pop the first gen I started. People are dropping like flies now, getting exposed. I rescue my fourth survivor now and heal them. I pop the second gen I had started. So now three gens have popped, two I did completely, one done while I was chased. I've rescued four survivors and healed two. One survivor goes down, death hook. Another goes down, death hook. I have my third gen 90% done when my last teammate gets exposed. He goes down at 98%. I pop it, hoping he has Adrenaline, but he doesn't. GF gets the death hook and I hide in a locker to avoid BBQ. I run to the opposite corner of the last hook and happen to find hatch. I ended with 30k points (only survival not maxed), next closest survivor had 11k points. Against a GHOSTFACE.

TLDR - Rank 1 solo vs Ghostface, had four unhooks, two full heals, broke Ruin, did three gens completely solo, other gen popped during my chase, which was the only one to last longer than 30 seconds, got hatch, finished with 19k more than next closest survivor. Rank doesn't matter.

Skill ceiling for both sides is way too low for 20 ranks that are supposed to display skill.

This combined with trash hitboxes with free kills, noobs carried by noed up to the purple ranks, derankers farming yellow day by day, swf getting boosted to red ranks. LUL rank system

@OP not at all because I d/c too often to play in those ranks where I belong

Rank, generally speaking, is an indication of monthly activity. That being said, the more you play the better you get. So, it kind of goes hand in hand in a sense, but you have to take it with a grain of salt. This game has been around for a long time, and there are many degrees of skill level.

No the rank system is completly random or something is just broken. I got a silver in gatekeeper emblem (to stop gen progress) after I killed all survivors and they did only 1 gen. I got once a black emblem in devout (hooking and injure survivors) after killing 3 survivor.

I could keep going but what I want to say is, the conditions what the emblems say are not true at all, the gatekeeper emblem for an example has nothing to do what you do, when you get genrushed by survivors you WILL have a bad emblem, doesnt matter how much you protect the gens or kick them. It is only up to the survivors not you. And that also happens to the rest of the emblems aswell mostly.

Thats why many ppl say ranks doesnt mean anything, there are still some ppl who think red ranks killers or survivors must be good but it is not true at all. Ive seen ALOT of really bad killers or survivors that still dont know the basic mechanics of the game in red ranks. For an example just yesterday, I had a claudette that got grabbed out of the locker trying to hide from a plague, after I saved her, she instantly used the fountain next to her to cleanse. We all died because of that consatnt cleansing from her. Sadly in the endgame chat she didnt say anything or answered when I asked her how she got to rank 1. It is waaaaaay to easy to rank up, it should be way harder and you should get some rewards for beeing rank 1.

The rank system determines "how good you are at getting pips."

Nothing more, nothing less. That is a skill in itself.

By "skill" you have to be more specific, because I get the feeling by "skill" you are talking about something else other than the skill to get pips.

There are many different skills in DBD. Skill at stealthing, at looping, at tracking, and protecting gens, etc. But what it boils down to is "skill at surviving" and "skill at killing."

Neither really have anything in particular to do with "skill at getting pips."

They are related in the sense that you need some skill at surviving to last long enough to get pips for survivor, and you need some skill at killing in order to progress the objectives you need to get pips as killer.

But you'll find that if you skew your play to just "surviving" and do your best to maximize it you probably won't be pipping. And if you skew your play to just "killing" you will not pip either.

Survivors who are so good at surviving that they can gen rush the game in 4 minutes are not going to pip. Survivors who hide all game and get the hatch are not going to pip. Killers who smash all the survivors in under 4 minutes is not going to pip.

So as you can see, "Skill at Surviving" and "Skill at Killing" has nothing to do with "Skill at Getting Pips." Ergo, Rank has nothing to do with "skill" in this sense.

Um, I Cant believe everyone is saying No??? YES IT DOES. You DONT level down unless your making big bloodpoints in the game...which means you have to be good at this game to do so. At one point, I wasnt very good at this game and I couldnt get past level 15. It wasnt till I cracked down and got better that I became a level 4 and it's because I've worked my ass off to get it . And when I play against players who are higher rank like in the green, they are no where near as good in their gameplay. Sorry. Not to mention, as your leveling down closer to rank 1. It gets harder because you have to start earning BIGGER bloodpoints to rank down.

I hit red ranks today as survivor for the first time and honestly I'm only there because I pip against the rank 16 killers I'm matched with.

It's kind of frustrating because it builds bad habits into you, on the rare occasions I do go against an experienced killer, they will know how to get me at tiles in ways I've never thought of, if only because "the wrong thing" often works against killers who are less experienced.

I know this is the way you learn, but it would be nice if I could learn once every few games instead of once every 15 or so, but I suppose with the new MMR coming out that may be alleviated somewhat.
