How can I lower game settings outside of the game's settings menu?

My PC has a little trouble running this game. It isn't the best PC but it can still run games like Overwatch and League of Legends. I have the settings turned down as much as possible but I still find myself lagging in the beginning of a match and having the game run smoothly by late game when I've had so much trouble that I'm pretty much dead by the time my computer begins to run the game smoothly. Does anyone have a fix for this other than stop playing the game?
