Demo Boi Shred Ability Bug

At one point in the game as playing demo, my friend says he couldn't use the shred ability anymore but he could still m1 survivors down and still use portals. I'm not sure what made this bug happen but that's all we know about it.
Anyone else? i'm trying to replicate this in kyf but to our prevail no luck.
