Nightmare lullaby too quiet / radius too small

I was the last remaining survivor and working on a gen next to the open hatch in the shack. I heard The Nightmare's lullaby start to play and immediately got a skill check. I figured I could fail the check, wake myself up for points, and bounce, but no! The killer was already closing the hatch even though I was standing on top of it!
