PC - failed attack when the survivor drops an item

I'm not sure if it was really a bug but I was playing killer with pig.
A jake dropped a toolbox and my attack didn't hit him, I was very close to him.
We were on the second floor of the coal tower, MacMillan map.
What makes me think it's a bug is that jake heard me making my attack on the stairs, he started running and stopped just to drop the object, as if he knew about the bug. It is the first time that I hit a survivor doing that action so I don't know if it is something usual.
