Dead By Daylights Pay to Win Nature
Licensed DLC Characters are locked behind paywalls and this is fine since stronger alternatives are available through purchase with in game shards for killers and survivors themselves are essentially just skins. The real problem at play here is those characters perks.
Decisive strike is a full 60 seconds of invulnerability for any survivor off of a hook, locked behind at least a 5 dollar paywall. Barbecue and Chili doubles the speed at which you can level up characters and is one of the best information perks in the game, locked behind at least a 5 dollar paywall. Save The Best For Last, Demogorgen's Best perk for his kit, locked behind at least a 5 dollar paywall. Surveillance a huge bonus for any Pyramid Head player, locked behind at least a 5 dollar paywall. Make your choice one of the best perk additions for the Wraith and Freddy, locked behind at least a 5 dollar paywall.
Of course you can win without any of these perks but that's not the issue, no pay to win game lets you buy automatic wins, they let you buy advantages which these perks clearly are.
Now you may say that the shrine of secrets is the answer to my problem but it is nothing but a faulty bandage on a gaping wound. Decisive Strike has shown up 11 times on the shrine, Barbecue and Chili has shown up 4 times, Save The Best For Last 10, Surveillance 4, Make Your Choice 5, and I wont go on to mention how some of the DLC perks from as old as Demogorgen haven't even been listed in the shrine yet.
You ask players who do not wish to pay for killers or survivors they don't want to wait for an unlisted amount of time till their perks are purchasable with shards, this is the same thing Battlefront 2 did. Make players grind for months for the chance to get the more powerful tools while others can just pay to get it immediately. All perks should be purchasable for Iridescent Shards and shouldn't be locked behind a pay/wait wall.
Edit: So people stop commenting just purchase the DLC and stop complaining,I have all DLC that is not the problem. It's that you are forced to buy it if you want an advantage or wait for what could be forever to get all DLC perks
Edit #2: I mention in this post I mean perks not characters, please read that part, I mention in this post what is wrong with the shrine system and on average it takes two years to get a full set of DLC perks for one character, please read that part. I also mention that these perks do not equal auto wins only advantages, please read that part. No P2W game that is multiplayer allows you to buy free wins.

But... F2P weekly shrine!?!?!!
EDIT: Apparently this needs /S

If you don't want to pay the full price (something I can really understand since bhvr loves to nerf/change payed content), wait for a sale of the dlcs.
Dbd sales are pretty often on steam.
Besides that I see there no problem. It's not like you spend 30 dollars or so on them. Just 2-5 by a sale, far as I remember.
8 -
I myself have all the DLC but for people who Don't want to pay for them it is litterally pay to win it doesnt matter how cheap it is it's still scummy
5 -
litterally adressed this
2 -
I guess I should have put the /s. I admit I did not read your wall of formatless text.
3 -
ok?
0 -
Cool, maybe in 2 years I can get all perks in this way.
7 -
The game has a full F2P "business model" that comes with a steep B2P price. Of course it's P2W. I'm frankly shocked they don't have a $10/mo sub to double BP gains given the absolutely ridiculous levels of grind.
5 -
That's exactly the problem I'm mentioning....
1 -
According to DEVs posting on this forum, they have millions of active players. Clearly they are printing money regardless. Ethical problem? Sure, but people don't think. Business problem? Obviously not.
EDIT: Guess which one they care about? 🙃
2 -
is this guy for real or its fake? cuz if its fake good 1 but damm if youre for real youre just insane youre just new player you have shrine that you can get perks from dlc for free also you can buy the killers or survivor for free except license and mah dude some other game dlc cost like 15 or maybe more they are very good devs to put at low price for license dlc
4 -
Never said it was a business problem its the same way EA printed money of course I'm coming at this from an ethical pov (IT'S THE SAME WAY EA PRINTED MONEY)
0 -
Ummm.... Save the best for last is not demos perk?.. And the dlc is optional. Sure bbq and decisive help a lot but you dont need them, and for only what $7 you get 2 characters and 6 perks. I dont see the problem.
12 -
I said licensed DLC and addressed the shrine obviously you didnt read good one mah dude. Btw I have all the DLC and 2000 hours so i'm not new :).
0 -
So, what is your goal exactly? I highly doubt anyone who hasn't already purchased the game is reading this.
1 -
I said Demos best perk as in its the best perk he can use. The problem isnt the price its that you have to pay in the first place for that advantage, DLC is optional I said that but it gives you an advantage obviously you didnt read
0 -
It's just to build outcry for this model I find it highly unethical many people read about the Battlefront ######### after outcry started
0 -
He is referring to your lack of punctuation, use of paragraphs, etc. It was really hard to read to be honest.
To the topic on hand. To a new player it can seem quite unfair, but there are in game currencies and the shrine to counter that. The only downside is that the grind is real.
0 -
So the same as battlefront? Also I used proper grammar and punctuation the only problem was that it wasn't long enough I felt a need to split it into multiple paragraphs
0 -
also if you want Decisive strike without paying for the dlc or for the character, then get it for 2000 IRI shards in the shrine of secrets?? lol your post is idiotic because there are many that haven't paid for the dlc's that have these perks because of the shrine.
1 -
1.78 $, hehehehe
0 -
just spend money, did you expect to buy a $20 game $6 on sale sometimes and get all the content including licensed content, Did you know that buying the rights to things cost loads emone and that just because you don't like it doesn't make it free all of a sudden.
3 -
Bruh it's not the cost it's that it's pay to win in the first place no matter the cost some people arent able to pay
Edit: And shouldn't have to for that matter
0 -
Decisive has been 11 times on the shrine already, If you miss those occasions maybe you should purchase the DLC and stop whining about it.
2 -
Yeah so wait 10 months for the next decisive strike like battlefront made people do lol.

As long as people can grind (even it's effectively an endless grind with no end) to get the killers/survivors with shards which are obtained via play time, they will defend this, because they've been inculcated to think ######### F2P practices are normal. This makes sense if you're like under 25 and never knew anything else.
Story time, games used to come complete, well tested, and with all content. DLC was not a thing. Day 1 DLC was not a thing. F2P was not a thing. The golden age of gaming is long past. The MBA douchebags have ruined another industry. Children who don't know better feed the beast and the rest of us are stuck with the ######### show.
Frankly I usually avoid ######### like this, but, I didn't know it had F2P models and grind when I bought the game, and I bought all the DLC when I bought it in the anniversary sale. If anything, it's the deceptive marketing where you think you can, you know, get the perks you already paid for to use immediately, but yea this is an EA CoD bullshit bait and switch. If the progression were reasonable it would be more tolerable.
1 -
Ahahahahaha already have the DLC 11 times out of how many shrines? oh yeah 74 so uh how long should you wait for the strongest perk in the game ? oh 4 months at least crazy
0 -
i don't know.. i purchased one thing from there once but i own all the dlc's now so i don't pay attention to it. but it is a way to get the perk without paying for the dlc or the character thus the perk itself is not behind a pay wall only the ability to play as lori or mikie is.
0 -
13 licensed characters $65 average game price $60 if you want the full game buy the full game, even better when the dlcs go on sale and even even better when you don't want some so you just DON'T boy those dlcs, but you payed $20 or less expecting a full game with hundreds of thousands of dollars of licensed content free.
0 -
My bad about demo, i misunderstood. And i did read your entire thing, i just dont see it the same way you do. Bbq might give a bloodpoint advantage but other perks track better. Regardless less then $10 for access in a $20 game ($30 on consoles) is not a bad price at all.
0 -
$30 actually plus all dlcs equals out to over $100 and average game price for Tripple A titles is $60 at realease, so :)
0 -
Shrine of secrets my boi.
Also you can buy the original charackters for shards.
And of course they have to sell the licenced charackters otherwise they would get in big trouble.
2 -
with all dlcs plus the base game its over $100 and that doesnt even attack my argument that its pay to win doesnt matter about the cost it's about the ethics, and thats not mentioning tripple A games charge $100 flat prices at realease for all future DLC when this indie game will just keep expanding its price forever becoming more and more p2w
0 -
Said licensed characters should be paid for only mentioned perks being purchased, Shrine of secrets takes 2 years on average to get all the perks from 1 dlc character
0 -
This game has been out for 4 years. Yes, there is a big bloodpoint grind for a game that has been out for 4 YEARS. This game is far from P2W. Shrine Of Secrets is an easy way to get perks that you're missing. You don't want to pay then wait until the perks show up. Otherwise, play a different game.
2 -
we also back then lived in a world that would play the hell out of a game that we paid 60 bucks for and keep the game till we couldn't play it anymore for what ever reason. Now days people grab a game, play it through once paying 60 bucks for it and then trade it in for 6 bucks or less for the company to place it up for 40 bucks. DLC's were made to keep games relavent far past their end. take the original Mechwarrior. it was a great game at the time... but in the end mechwarrior came out in 1993, and in 1995 a new game replaced it called mechwarrior 2, then that got an expansion called the ghost bear legacy, but that didn't keep it from being usurped by mechwarrior 2 mercenaries, and then mechwarrior 3 soon after that. it goes on and on. as new computers and consoles come out games get outmoded and people are now moving on. the DLC idea was perfect, the game is complete but things are still able to be done to make money thus you get the expansions, or the DLC. NOW a full expansion used to be as much as a new game, but required the original game, the DLC is less expensive and makes it more appealing for people to play.
DBD operates much like League of Legends, Smite and other vs games does and releases "DLC" or new content every so often to keep people interested. MMO's do the same but at a must longer period of time but they too charge for this DLC. it is part of the gamer life since the late 90's.
Speaking of DBD's F2P model, lets look at the Spark of Insanity DLC with the doc and feng. (we all know the map is there but you can still be on the map without owning it) If you buy feng with shards that's 9000, same with the doc that's 9000 shards. and it takes several level ups to get 9000 shards so the amount of time you put into the game to get those shards (18000 for both) does not equate to the 6.99 for the normal price for the dlc. you got a better deal and now can out those shards to better use and get more blood points in the shrine as you can get 150K, or 250K for 2000 shards in the shrine of secrets. or you can get a costume with them instead. Honestly you got the better deal than grinding for the expansion characters, i doubt that most people have made enough to get all non licensed content characters unless they have been playing since 2016 or played to devotion 7-10, I know I'm devotion 5 and I don't think i've made enough to buy all the non licensed characters via shards.
1 -
It takes 2 yearson average to get a full set of perks from a DLC charcater, that is unethical when people can buy that advantage from day 1
0 -
What do you suppose they do then? Make every perk from licenced characters useless?
You might have had a point if these perks were glaringly overpowered but most of them aren't even that good
0 -
Then don't play the game, buy the dlc or wait for the shrine. You don't get handed something instantly. It's licensed. You don't have to pay but you will wait in return. Balanced and fair. Unlike most games, you can still get the perks even if you come after 8 years of its release.
2 -
perks arent licensed, characters are. Not blanced to wait 2 years for the same advantage someone has had for 2 years, that's ridiculous.
1 -
If someone can afford a console or pc as well as internet to run the game but can't afford a to put aside even a couple dollars a month to get the dlc they want then they either have bigger problems to worry about or are kids. Either way saying people might not be able to pay the dlc is a pretty bad argument.
Outside of that, I guess technically speaking yes the game is pay to win? Though it is stupidly minimal to the point it's like a cop arresting someone for jaywalking in an small town. Sure it's wrong but it's at the most minimal of levels to the point it's not worth the time complaining about it. Most games when you hear p2w either have items or something else that you can only ever buy with money that saves a stupid amount of time on the grind or makes you stronger then you should by a huge margin.
If survivors and killers had offerings/add-ons/items that they could only buy with real money then I would consider it a p2w problem.
DS won't make you a great survivor and if anything it could even make you worse if you overly rely on it.
Surveillance, Make your Choice and StBfL won't make you a great killer. They might help but it's hardly to the point where you're suddenly going to win every game just using one perk. Sometimes they might carry a win just as the perk you didn't equip that match could have carried a win as well.
BBQ is about the only one I would argue you have a point with for p2w as it effectively cuts the grind in half for 5 dollars. That right there is a huge time save and does require money to get or the luck of the gods. I still don't think it's all that big a problem worth complaining about but I would consider it a p2w perk.

I literally said at the end make all perks purchasable with iri shards, you could even make dlc perks cost more if you wanted to just so buys on dlc dont go down as much, at least then its not p2w
0 -
1 it’s not ptw if it is available for free
2 it’s also not ptw if it doesn’t give a massive advantage over other players someone without those perks could still easily beat someone with them
3 ptw is like cod bo4 with the stingray that was only purchasable and was like a burst fire rpg that you could not escape from
1 -
Battlefront had every character Available for free it was still p2w because people could pay for that advantage or have the chance to get it after months and months of grinding like we do ind dbd
It does give a massive advantage on some characters, not needed if you're good enough but again Darth Vader was able to be beat it didnt hand people free wins no p2w gives you a free win.
But that had outplay so by your logic it wasnt p2w
0 -
Battlefront let you get Darth Vader without paying money in the first place, It was still talked about as the worst pay to win game ever, DBD is exactly the same as Battlefronts model the advantages just cost less. No P2W game lets you purchase a free win. Darth Vader was still beatable and as for your argument for BBQ I disagree i think its the weakest perk there for my argument as it gives you the least amount of advantage in game and is more pay to progress than anything but it still is better than most of the free tracking perks and on some killers the best one.
0 -
1 Battlefront let you get Darth Vader without paying Money but the grind took upwards of years of in game time depending on how lucky you were like DBD
2 No p2w game gives you a free win every character purchasable with money in battlefront was beatable and the perks in DBD give the same amount of an advantage as those characters did
3 Under your definition that isnt p2w because it has counterplay and doesnt result in an instant win
0 -
You mean like the shrine? I mean i know the randomness doesn't make it ideal but what you want is already in the game.
How is it p2w if you can get the perks without paying anything other then the base game?
0 -
I mean you kinda proved my point there it doesn’t give any advantage over other players that guarantees they win every time or even most of the time it’s not ptw play gacha games to see true ptw that is where you literally buy yourself to the highest level in a day and stomp all the f2p player base
0 -
p2w is paying for an advantage as ive stated 3 times now no game that is multiplayer lets you buy an instant win
edit: Also with your gacha example thats litterally what dbd players can do rank 20 player gets the best perks in the game day one and knows the basics of how to play(down and hook survivors while stopping generators as shown int he tutorial)will stomp over other people who just got the game.

Game was on sale for $8 on steam. Bubba was like $3 and Halloween was like $4 or something.
I see the problem if you look at it as just "buying perks" but getting Myers, Laurie, and Bubba for $7 doesn't sound too bad to me. I've had a lot of fun playing them minus Laurie's awful injured and hook noises.
