If hatch spawns on the boat in swamp under the broken stairs at the front of the boat you can't open it with a key and leave. It plays the animation but it seems like at the height of the "jump" into hatch the character collides with the broken staircase and it resets the animation and does not consume the key or open the hatch.
Hatch needs to spawn on the boat (main building) in the spawn point of under the broken stairs toward the front of the boat (the side closest to the dock for clarification of what the "front" is)
