Maybe it's already been suggested. FWIW I haven't seen it but I also don't spend a lot of time reading about the game.
Lock picks. Change keys to lock picks.
Once a survivor finds the hatch, the are required to pick it open similar to working a gen or removing a reverse bear trap.
Green keys will require many skills checks or more difficult skill checks whereas rare keys would require fewer skill checks or less difficult skill checks.
Progress would be lost if the hatch is left and failed skill checks would notify the killer as normal.
