PC - Got Merciless Killer and double pipped even though the bar at the rank screen only shows one

Not really possible to reproduce, just happened randomly.
I was playing Spirit on Fractured Cowshed and when the match ended, I got Merciless Killer. However, when I looked at my rank screen, the bar there clearly showed that I only got one pip (although the number at the left showed +2). The points from the emblems also indicate, that I should have only gotten one pip. I've only had this occur once so far (although I might have not noticed it before.
