PC - Killer able to hit more than one Survivor with 1 (one) basic attack - Video Capture Attached

Brief Summary

A killer was able to (successfully) hit 2 (two) survivors with a single basic attack. The bug occurred when one survivor (Feng Min, p: Borrowed Time) unhooked me (Yui Kimura) with the Killer (Huntress) nearby.

Action summary:

  1. Killer hooks Yui Kimura on a hook while Feng Min fails to blind the killer with a flashlight
  2. Feng begins unhooking Yui despite Huntress' presence.
  3. Huntress takes one Basic Attack, putting Feng into the Injured Health State.
  4. While Huntress is occupied during the Basic Attack cooldown animation, Feng unhooks Yui completely. Borrowed Time activates, giving Yui the Endurance Status Effect.
  5. Almost immediately, and almost (or exactly at) the same time the unhooking animation ends, Huntress takes another Basic Attack. Perplexingly, the match server grants the hit to both Yui and Feng. Per the activation of Borrowed Time, Yui is put into the Deep Wounds Health State. At the same exact moment, Feng is put into the Dying State.
    1. Despite Yui being granted points for "Protection", Feng was still downed. It is unknown if Feng was awarded points for Protection.
    2. The contradiction between game rules, the behavior of perks, and the mechanics of basic attacks is obvious.

Why it matters

This is an unfair and unintended benefit to the killer; a well-aimed or well-timed (or otherwise, "lucky") hit could possibly exploit this bug and circumvent gameplay elements including perks such as Borrowed Time.

Players (rightfully) expect a game with consistent rules, and one that honors sacrifices one player may make to save another. This problem, however new or infrequent (which it may not be new or infrequent) is a detriment to the players who spend time and resources to develop their accounts with cosmetics, unlocked perks, and more to have fun with their friends or spontaneously matched strangers in DbD.

This problem could be indicative of a larger problem, such as a possible error in how a match server resolves disputed timing, positioning, or key events between game clients; or an algorithmic error (i.e. exclusive events or instruction branches are not correctly coded to be exclusive).

The Match

This match occurred on March 15th, 2021 at approximately 8:07pm EST. This time is sourced from the screen capture creation date and time, minus the duration of the match up to the point where the file was saved.

The four survivors were in a party together.

Offerings: Fresh Crispleaf Amaranth (Yui), Escape! Cake, White Ward, Ardent Shrike Wreath.

Map: Shelter Woods - The MacMillan Estate

Game Clients: It is believed that all four survivors were playing from the Steam distribution of DbD for PC. It is unknown what client the Killer was playing from. As the bug occurred with an action relative to the Killer, the Killer's client version or platform may be relevant.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

The Steps to Reproduce this bug are unclear. Due to the timing of the problem, it is believed that the bug may be related to the changing of game states as a survivor is unhooked, and differences in timing between the DbD server, Killer's game instance, and each Survivor's game instance. A player can not definitively or unilaterally diagnose the cause of bugs.

Although the StR are not clear, a video capture of the problematic portion of the match has been attached to this post.

SURVIVORS Involved

It is believed that the survivors being used was not a causal factor in this bug. Nonetheless, they are:

Yui Kimura (Me) - Survivor that was unhooked and given the Endurance Status Effect, and then hit by the Basic Attack that also hit another Survivor. In this match, Yui had the following level 3 perks equipped: Urban Evasion, Iron Will, Saboteur, Spine Chill.

Feng Min - The Survivor with the Borrowed Time perk who unhooked another survivor, and was then hit by the same Basic Attack that set the other Survivor to the Deep Wounds Health State. In this match, Feng had the Borrowed Time perk equipped. It is unknown what other perks were equipped or the level of each perk. It is presumed that Borrowed Time was level 3.

Although Claudette and David were present in the match, it is not believed they are relevant.

The Killer

The Huntress was the Killer for this match. It is not known what add-ons or perks she had equipped for this match, though no Active Hex warning was displayed in Yui's HUD for the duration of the clip.

documents

A screen, sound, and voice capture for the segment of the match where the problem occurred has been attached. The Discord Overlay is visible on-screen, and the audio of the discord call is included in the clip. The clip is about 58 seconds. The most relevant segment of this clip is between 7s and 14s time markings.

The Logs from this match are (likely) unavailable, as I continued to play the game immediately after and have restarted the game multiple times since the occurrence of this bug. I strongly suggest that Behaviour Interactive maintain server logs rather than relying on users to provide their client's logs. With enough care, Behaviour should be able to trace the match to it's (presumed) system identifiers with this information.

The Video (Game Window, Game Audio, Discord Overlay, Discord Audio):

In this attached .zip file, there is a ~20.7mb mp4 Video file that is approximately 58 seconds long. The clip starts approximately 6 minutes into the match, at about 8:13pm EST. Again, the most relevant portion of this clip are between the 7s and 14s timestamps.

Congratulations, by disallowing the .mp4 file extension as an attachment to bug reports, you saved your servers a whopping 90kb of space. How touching to know that Behaviour can't automatically compress files once uploaded. Apparently, that's not true either - the (zip) file size changed from 20.6mb to 20.12mb after being uploaded, so Behaviour must be doing some sort of post-processing anyway - either stripping metadata or compressing further. Are file size limits not enough?

A higher-quality version of the clip, along with the first 7 (approx.) minutes of the match, can be made available upon request.

DISCORD ALiases

For contextual purposes in listening to each survivor's voice in the Discord Audio, observe the Discord overlay to identify the voices speaking, their discord alias (first letters of which are provided below), which only appears when that person is speaking, and their in-game characters:

F: Yui Kimura

M: Feng Min

w: Claudette Morel

N: David King
