Key Etiquette Question

Can anybody tell me why survivors with keys will set them down next to the hatch rather than using them right away? I can understand if they're trying to get everybody to escape together, but I've had people do this when we're already all together or at the last two survivors.

Do you mean they put the key on the ground for a moment? That's done to make sure you notice there's a key in play, which is easier to see than when carried in hand, and sometimes to show that it's a key capable of opening tne hatch aka not a broken one.

It basically means 'hey stay here, we can take hatch' rather than risking someone runs away without realizing the hatch is being used.
