A Case for Re-Opening Closed Rifts
Hello good people of the fog, I’d like to make a case for Re-Opening the Rifts that have previously been closed and leaving them (and any future Rifts) open permenantly. It is something that I feel strongly about so I figured rather than keeping it to myself I’d post here and see what others thought of the idea.
Benefits of Re-Opening old Rifts.
- With the new Resident Evil chapter on the horizon I’ve seen a lot of talk about new players coming to the game, those new players will have missed out on a wealth of great cosmetics and cool little charms to unlock through no other reason than ‘they weren’t playing at the right time’ which seems a little unfair to me.
- It’s not just new players who would’ve missed out but also players (like myself) who take breaks from the game, sometimes quite sizeable ones, from time to time for various reasons, such as needing a break from overplaying DBD, or to get away from the toxicity that can be present, or simply because they want to play something else, like Civ V ;)
- There are also players who just don’t have the spare time to commit to finishing the Rift in the allotted time because of work or College / University or other real life commitments.
- With several rifts to choose from, each having a premium track, it would provide a continuous availability of some revenue to BHVR, admittedly people could just buy one pass and use the auric cells earned from the it to purchase the next but in defence of the idea, that’s already an option between rifts anyway.
It would be remiss of me to make such a suggestion for the game without at least suggesting how I think it could be implemented.
Implementation of Re-Opening old Rifts.
- Each Rift would be tied to the Tome that it released with so that the fragments gained from challenges would only apply the relevant Rift, and yes, old tomes would have to have the rift fragments put back into the challenges. Hopefully players who have completed challenges in a tome after the rift closed would be compensated the relevant number fragments toward the associated rift for those completed challenges. (Fingers crossed that would actually be possible)
- As for the fragments gained passively from XP while playing, the player would be able to select an ‘active’ rift that these fragments with apply to. (Simple, and also hopefully possible).
- The main screen for the Archives could be the Tome selection page and then you’d be able to switch between Challenges and Rifts within each Tome.
So that’s the crux of my argument for re-opening old rifts,. If anyone has any feedback on the idea, be it additional suggestions or criticisms, then I welcome it all and am happy to answer any questions you may feel I haven’t addressed here.
Thanks to anyone who read this and good luck out there.

I've completed every rift on time and wouldn't have any issue with people who don't have my amount of spare time to have re-opened rifts. It's not game breaking, it's not about exclusives to lord over others, it's just another means of working towards unlocking cosmetics. They'll still have to work for it, but they wouldn't feel so pressured to put all your time in to do it or it's gone forever. Heck, I'd even go as far to say that they should have the reduced rift leveling we got with the current one. Rift leveling before was downright oppressive.

we could also make better rifts and include old outfits and charms in the free track/paid track

Thanks people, I really appreciate the support for the idea.
@Khar that's exactly the kind of situation I was trying to describe. Also, yes, lowering the amount of XP to earn a fragment from playing the game was a great move and really helped lower the grind.
I know most multiplayer games with a 'battle pass' do the same thing, with the pass only available for a limited time before moving onto another one, but a pretty common complaint I see is that it's just a cheap tactic to exploit the players fear of missing out on the time exclusive cosmetics. It's a trick I've just become tired of and think that BHVR have an opportunity to still use the 'battle pass' mechanic in their game but to improve it so it's not oppressive to their player base, kind of like how they have a cosmetics shop in the game that uses a premium currency but they didn't go the whole 'daily rotation of a handful of items' route (that particular feature really gets on my nerves too) and actually leave stuff available to buy whenever.
