How can we be more diverse in dbd after the LGBTQIA2S+ character
Alright, I'm gonna be honest here before I jump into the actual discussion, I wasn't on board for the longest time on getting a LGBTQ+ survivor, mostly because I felt like it felt weird in a game like dbd and that there are bigger issues in the game, but I've shifted my view over some time, and I've come to support the idea of getting a character like this. My main thing is, once we've gotten our character, how else can we help promote diversity and progressiveness. An idea I had is maybe, to help spread awareness, is that we can get a survivor who is either autistic or schizophrenic, as someone who has a family member who deals with both of these. Overall, I would love to see more diversity within the game, as I've come to see how important it actually is, and, even if it is a horror game, I want to see more people come into the game and feel comfortable that they are represented within the game.
edit: please be civil everyone, I've already seen some peepo get heated up
2nd edit: its 9:00 and I came in to check on this post, 99+ replies, yikes, anyway look at 1st edit

leather face is autistic

is he really? never knew that

I mean honestly I just want them to focus on making the game better performance wise and hopefully start adding more horror genres to the game. The game is already pretty diverse and I dont think that should be their main focus at the moment.

I do not feel good for killing survivors who has some problems. So i do not think this is good idea.
LGBTQ+ is different case, they deserves representative in game, that's all. But like i said, i will not feel good when i kill survivor who has health problems
3 -
Gay isn't a personality.
Do not count this as a homophobic thing. Devs like to use that trait as their main personality.
41 -
Good point! Atm, there are bigger problems, just wanted to throw in something since we want to make this game more open to diversity hopefully after all of the bugs and problems settle down
2 -
The thing is, spreading awareness about stuff like that is good and i fully support it irl but should this really be a matter in a video game?
I dont care if we get a character like that but i dont think its needed to tackle these different targets to get ,,diversety" in the game. I dont say it has no place in games but i think its not neccesary needed either in a game like this.
EDIT: Just to clarify because i worded it pretty bad, again.
I fully support LGBT+ etc and i really wish people like this would be accepted EVERYWHERE (My best friend is gay too btw)
but what i meant is that this stuff should be the FOCUS in a video game.
If they add it as a side thing in their storys or something like that its completely fine but it shouldnt be the chapter focus.

Devs can use heterosexual relationships just fine without making it a personality (except Frank and Julie let's ignore them) so idk why everyone brings up the possibility of an lgbt+ character, especially one in a same-Sex relationship, being written like that
10 -
Not all of us want to be a stereotype in a video game
18 -
I vote for being more diverse through multiple lgbt+ characters, for a start. Just to eliminate any and all arguments of tokenism, have a gay character, a bi one, maybe non-binary too.
Asides from that, I agree. Neurodivergant people being shown as survivors instead of the typical stigma of killers would be welcome to me
Also more diverse body types. Jane and Jeff are welcome editions, even if I hate Jeff because he reminds me too much of me. More of them please and ty bhvr.

What makes you think they'd make it a stereotype? Seriously, I'm interested, because the lore writing team have proven themselves mostly competent thusfar.
Edit: not to mention they're working with lgbt+ charities to get this representation right.
9 -
more body type variations and nationalities.
I'm waiting for a character from south east Asia or the middle east there are a lot of cool urban legends and folktales that a killer can be based and the possible cosmetic options from those areas would be great for survivors.

Someone being lgbt a lot of times isn't visible.
And you mentioned because straight people make their personality about their sexuality (even though being in a relationship is not really the same), there is a really bad stigma about LGBT characters being made in a way that all that there's about them is the fact that they're lgbt (a really good a recent example is q-force).
I think instead of making a character that the whole focus is their gender/sexuality, it should be mentioned in a lore like it's just that, a lore part. Like they did with david having a girlfriend or whatever.

Twitter and Pride Month.
I win.

I've never read any lore, to be honest, but if any character discusses a heterosexual boyfriend or girlfriend, why not LGBTQ?
10 -
I think he’s talking about how certain games have made characters that are just tokens. The devs have already said they don’t wanna do that though

Add an old lady! We don't have any! They can start by being more diverse with ages.
17 -
This right here. Jane Jeff and David are the only survivors with different body types really and it would be nice to see some more
4 -
This! I've been wanting one for a long time. We already have Bill as an old man.
6 -
I hear this is reportedly a game about brutally murdering people. Not sure why it started getting so hung up on representation and sexual orientation tbh.
9 -
Can't wait for people to hate on each other again in this type of thread.
If people care about iore and want to find themselves in a character let them. It won't hurt anyone.
Also don't hate on everyone if they are already represented and you are not. I know my country will never be represented in dbd. We don't even have an option to select it in ps store yet. I don't mind tho it is how it is.
Not everyone is the same but we should respect each other no matter the sexuality, race etc.
6 -
Devs have mentioned in the past that they want to branch out with their characters and the stories they tell
7 -
That's what we all want, to be fair. Equal treatment to what they did with David and Felix, at most Nurse. At least everyone I've spoken to wants that
9 -
Not really the comeback you thought it was, try again
4 -
Roughly August 2016 with the release of "The Last Breath" chapter, featuring the killer "The Nurse".
8 -
I just want a health chapter focus on gameplay map design and bug fixes
20 -
same tbh
4 -
Rather fortunately for you the lore team and the development team are two seperate departments and the decisions of one do not impact the other so we can have both!
8 -
Must be nice to always be represented everywhere.
7 -
A lot of times it isn't visible because it isn't accepted. Like in the real world.
I don't care in what manner they decide to bring a LGBTQI+ character, as long as A) they look good (because I am a sucker for good cosmetics) B) they have an awesome storyline. To me it sounds like you want them to 'touch' on their sexuality, whereas someone like me wants them to be out and without a care in the world, because they feel free to be themselves.
If that means the character wants to wear colorful clothes (as an example) because it fits their story. Then so be it.
4 -
I said not sure why, not not sure when.
2 -
Well feel free to ask the devs all about why they wrote the Nurse on the way they did.
3 -
Wow snowflake much? I'm hardly represented anywhere, it's a diverse ass world out there, I don't mind what bhvr has done whatsoever, besides the pride flag looking too pristine they should bloody it up like every other charm, but I don't understand the obsession

I wish that was true but with what history has taught us about this game it's that literally anything added in can cause any number of random bugs to literally any other random and unrelated part of the game.
Anyone remember when some survivors voices were adjusted and it caused Leatherface to get stuck in the chainsaw rev for the rest of a match unable to do anything?
Anytime they add so much as a line of text the game I live in fear of the random bugs it will bring, it's why this game is still under the horror category

I'm sorry you really think using "His boyfriend" instead of "his girlfriend" in a line of lore added- again lore has yet to break the game- will lead to half the game being bricked? Whilst if they'd used the non-lgbt+ version the game would work perfectly?
Imma have to pass there chief. Things are a bugged mess of problems, this ain't one of em.

Pass if you want but I wouldn't care about them adding anything they can think of, After the game actually works. The state of the game and the revenue it produces don't match. The players (customers) are being ripped. You don't see issues like this in another game. I like to think to overwatch gameplay, bug fixes, then art lore etc. No one cares if the in game charter is straight or gay we all just want the game working properly first
8 -
Correction, you don't care. A lot of people do care for representation, as well as caring for the game functioning at the same time. It is possible to want two different things simultaneously, you know?
5 -
I'm hoping they realise that, hey, you can have one character be multiple forms of representation without becoming a token, and that representation doesn't need to be in-your-face, and also that it really, really doesn't take that much effort.
Hopefully they continue to add cultural diversity, LGBT+ diversity and sprinkle it all with things like autism, varying social backgrounds, etc.
Also, still kinda wish they'd made Felix's pregnant girlfriend his pregnant boyfriend instead. I love those kinds of "you've gotta think about it" sentences. Hopefully they add some in future tomes and backstories, they really make me laugh and get warm fuzzy feelings.

Ok so here is how this post is going to go down.
People are going to come in saying something mildly homophobic possibly saying " lgbt characters shouldn't be in the game" and they will claim they won't care which completely contradict themselves by posting at all.
A moderator will pop for a few seconds and remind everyone to be respectful and no one will listen.
Then there is going to be those edgy homophobes posting, then GoodBoyKaru10, Mooks and Orion ect is going to get into an argument with said people about this subject with everyone being passive aggressive.
Then this post will get over 200 comments and completely shift to politics or religion regarding lgbt and then a moderator will come in and shut this post down and bring us all back to earth from arguing with their wisdom and then this post will fade into obscurity.
Did I miss anything or did I sum up correctly the events that is going to take place?
17 -
You missed the part where vocal supporters of the representation cause act hostile, ignorant and entitled towards everyone who doesn´t kiss their feet, even attacking those who support them.
11 -
This game had proven to me that if it tries to do two things at once we get Micheal Myers floating head running around the map with Billy's chainsaw
10 -
Which is why it is good when vocal supporters can defend themselves or as you call it "the cause" with intelligent thoughts and ideas.
Ignorance does not win against ignorance.

I care, because it's a completely seperate thing with completely different people working on it that doesn't interfere with bugfixing, gameplay, stability or balance. Developers don't actually have interchangeable skillsets, after all.
1 -
I´d love to see that happen for once. It´s been embarassing for every party involved in previous arguments regarding that topic.
3 -
Again, I think the problem is you just cant meet everyones expectations and desires on how the character should be.
Someone, somewhere is going to get annoyed by something. Because the LGBT+ is so insanly diverse in the first place.
All I know is I would love a little subtlety, they dont need to be a fighting for rights kind of icon for me to feel represented. But also, who even reads the bios and lore. Its all so long now. 😷
In other news I feel like it should be a male atleast, or FtoM. I feel like LGBT Males are so hard to come by. Seems its easier for the world to accept Females/Lesbians or something 👀COUGH LiS/LoU2 COUGH
I dunno, im just a young gay boy watching the forum burn everytime this gets brought up🙃
2 -
I understand it's two different teams but Everytime this game adds anything at all it brakes a bunch of completely unrelated things.
I just want the game working properly before adding so much as a line of in game
2 -
This thread has the potential to become very bad very fast. If you say leave sexual orientation out of it you become a homophobe, if you say do it you become a person capitulating. The thing is how many people would get reported for killing a survivor that is LGBTQ+. Didn't this happen with the flag charm? Basically that person would be completely off limits for fear of being banned.
6 -
No, this hasn't happened with the Pride charm. The devs specifically require proof that you have been targeted throughout several matches (which has always been bannable) or proof your game was griefed because of the charm. It would be the exact same situation here.

Personally, I feel that all forms of entertainment in this day and age have adopted a philosophy that every race, gender and sexuality have to be perfectly represented in every film, game or television show. This is not realistic and it's amazingly bland and lacks artistic integrity. A story of any type, should not try and force an ideal into it just because. In fact, the best stories are ones that form organically, without agenda's shoved into them.
For example, John Carpenters, The Thing did not have a single female character in the entire movie, yet it was still a great movie. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon didn't have a single Caucasian character in it and it was great.
Another example is Supergirl TV show. It has every race, gender and sexuality represented in it and you feel like there's an agenda trying to be shoved down your throat. It doesn't make the TV show any better, in fact it's a detriment to the show a lot of times.
I'm gay. I like Supergirl the TV show. However, it would be better served just telling a story instead of trying to shoe-horn all this political agenda stuff into it when it really doesn't need it most times.
