Idea For Deep Wound Changes

Hello Reader! I’m just another DBD player who spends too much time thinking about this game. Here are my opinions on the status effect Deep Wound.

Deep Wound is a status effect that feels more like an annoyance rather than an actually debuff to Survivors. As it stands right now, Deep Wound is a status effect applied to Injured Survivors via certain Killer Powers, Survivor Perks, or Item Add-Ons. While the debuff is applied, the Injured Survivor has a 20 sec timer on their Injured Health State; if they do not Mend their Deep Wounds before the timer depletes, they are put into the Dying State. However, the timer does not deplete while Running or Mending; Survivors can Mend themselves in 12 secs and Survivors can be Mended by other Survivors in 8 secs. Instead of Deep Wound being a tension-filled halfway state between Injured and Dying (like I think it was intended to be), it’s more of a “oh, I have to spend 8-12 secs Mending before I get back to what I was doing.” This doesn’t feel right since Deep Wounds gets the description of “lingering internal damage” in the Legion’s Power and “heavily damaged … getting closer to dying” in the DBD Wiki. The following proposed changes seek to make Deep Wound a more impactful debuff that Survivors want to avoid, while maintaining the ability for Survivors to interact and deal with it.

1.    The Deep Wound Timer should only deplete when the Survivor afflicted performs some action that progresses the game.

a.     For example: The Deep Wound Timer does not deplete while a Survivor is running, vaulting, walking, crouching, standing still, or hiding in a locker. The Timer does deplete while a Survivor is performing any action with a progress bar.

                                                    i.    Note: This includes things like repairing, unhooking, healing, mending, cleansing, etc.

2.    A Survivor should not be able to completely Mend themselves

a.     For example: A Survivor can only Mend themselves up to 95% of the progress bar and another Survivor is needed to complete the Mend.

                                                    i.    Note: This is the same as the Recover action in the Dying State

3.    Survivors with Deep Wounds should be able to see the Auras of other Survivors

a.     For example: A Survivor sees the Auras of all other Survivors remaining in the trial when afflicted with Deep Wounds

                                                    i.    Note: Again, exactly like when in the Dying State

The goal of the first part of the first change is to hopefully remove any potential for exploiting the Deep Wound Timer. Right now, Deep Wounds pauses when Running, but still depletes when Vaulting; it would take a while, but a Killer can force a Survivor to Vault so many times they bleed out. This change helps prevent that by making the Survivor be in control of what causes them to lose time. In order for this change to make sense, consider this. While injured, Survivors hold their hands to their abdomens, right? Let’s assume that the Survivor doing this is what keeps pressure on the wound and stops them from bleeding out, which is why the timer pauses. However, when a Survivor performs any action that requires both of their hands, (such as repairing, unhooking, cleansing, etc.), they can no longer hold pressure on the wound and start bleeding.

The second part of the first change and the second change together would make Deep Wound a more interactive debuff that requires a decision to be made depending on the scenario. Survivors would have to decide how to use their 20 secs. “Do I use 12ish of my secs Mending myself up to almost done and then find another Survivor to finish the Mend? Do I use 19 of my 20 secs to continue pressuring this Gen? But if I do that, will I have enough time on my Timer to perform an unhook on another Survivor, if necessary? Do I Mend myself first or this other Survivor who also has Deep Wounds? Which of us is closer to running out? Do I have a perk like Adrenaline or Inner Strength that could remove the Deep Wound and can I use them in this situation? Have I saved enough of my Timer to open this Exit Gate?” This would make the Survivor afflicted be forced to make tough decisions.

The goal of the third change is to ensure that Survivors have a consistent way to Mend their Deep Wounds, similar to how Dying Survivors can start crawling to other Survivors after Recovering as much as they can. However, the Survivor may have to chase after the other Survivor across the map, which could waste time.

But what do you think? Are these ideas good or trash?

I think these are interesting changes. I don't necessarily think the aura reading is a good idea, but the rest is intriguing enough that I'd want to test it in a PTB.

    1. that is just the inverse of what it does now. only more tedious.
    2. that would make them broken
    3. even as deep wound is now, that makes it unnecessary due to mending yourself. otherwise, would be useful so you don't up dead due to being locked out of progressing the game.

the first part doesn't hold up as much since the killer is going to catch up the survivor vaulting before they actually bleed out. so chasing itself counts as an exploit.

the second part as a possibility of locking the game, probably little chance, but could still do it.
