DBD is a Catastrophe Right Now and I'm Very Disappointed (Summary of Issues)
Disclaimer This is based on my personal experiences with the game. I was a former old PS4 player who switched to PC in December 2020. I used to play mostly survivor but now play pretty much exclusively killer, so bear in mind that I am speaking from someone who plays killer, and someone who plays killer at a high level and survivor at a garbage level (I'm not horrible, but depipping in solos is super common , plus i no longer have much interest in survivor. I only play for the challenges)
Firstly, I didn't buy the game once. I bought it TWICE because cross progression doesn't exist. Really cool. My console was an OG PS4, and, as we know, cannot run this game properly. I was switching to PC for other reasons, but was less than pleased to need to restart everything and re-purchase my favourite dlc packs.
There are quite a few other things I want to address. Because this might be relevant, here is who I play: Killer 95% of the time. Survivor 5%.
Killer: Nurse (85%), Pig (10%), Twins (4.5%), other (0.5%)
Survivor: Solo q (85%), Swf (15%)
Maps: Why are breakable walls everywhere? I have to stop and break it as most killers to break an infinite, allowing any survivor to escape in the time it takes to break it. Or I have to pre-break it, which is also wasting time. Also the map balance is brutal. Most maps are survivor sided (anything with corn, The Game, Haddonfield, Badham), or suck for both sides (Swamp, RPD). Certain killers can get completely wrecked by a maps. Unless you are very good, if there's a Haddonfield offering, you just lose as killer. Survivors (esp on comms) have a much higher chance of surviving on a non-optimal map, and even a map that isn't optimal can be more detrimental to the killer (Léry's for Huntress, Billy, Blight, Nurse, etc)
Map RNG: Why do long wall jungle gyms have the same chance to spawn as a T&L on any given tile despite the massive disparity in strength? Also random dead zones that happen. If you end up in a dead zone you just get hit. Attempt a 360 maybe but those rarely work. Anyone with an extended lunge also just...wins. Wraith, Spirit, T3 Myers. When there's a massive dead zone, even if you have distance, you'll lose/take a hit against most killers.
The Bugs: Dear Lord the bugs. Two of my favourite killers are buggy asf. Nurse has a blink bug and an m1 bug which happens at least 1 in 5 games as well as a few other rare ones. Blink bug has been in the game since her release, mind you. Twins are just a joke. Yes, I'm one of the 7 Twins players. I like unique chasing powers.
The Meta: Stale. Stale as hell. Every killer has some combo of ruin, undying, corrupt, pop, bbq, tinkerer, etc. Every survivor has some combo of Iron will, Unbreakable, Adrenaline, Exhaustion Perk that isn't Head On, DS, etc. Now, I'm not necessarily complaining, use what you want, but I like to play by myself and have no way of dealing with full meta killers with no communication, especially when I run "fun" builds. As a kliller, you pretty much have to run full meta or you lose.
Insidious: Again, I don't care how you play. If you want to insidious camp, go ahead. You payed your money, play however you want. But again, I'm probably playing solo so insidious literally means my entire team will lose. Hear me out: I'm in Bubba's Secret Dungeon being camped. If I stay dangling like a limp noodle to let them do gens, somebody is going to come for me and now two of us are guaranteed dead. That spells a loss for a survivor team. If I purposefully end myself on hook, Bubba finds a new victim before gens get done and the ending is the same. Not mad at the perk or player (although I still don't really understand the point of insidious -- why would there be a perk that encourages not chasing?) but the lack of counter that solos have to it. Sure Kindred exists, but Insidious counters it so unless they watch his aura slowly disappear, and put two and two together, then they will not do anything. Also I feel like I shouldn't need to run a perk to compensate for what a swf on comms get for free.
*Disclaimer 2* There are tons of toxic killers, but, again, I play mostly killer myself, so I don't see them as often, and thus, I will mainly be talking about survivor behavior. Survivor swf groups can also feed a "gang mentality" against a killer, which can cause people to be more "toxic" than they would be alone.
Reporting/Cheating: Not only have I had blatant hackers who I've met multiple times under the same account, but I've had subtle hackers who I don't even bother reporting because I know it doesn't matter. I was chasing a Quintin as Nurse. I have 300+ hours in Nurse. He was in the open. I continuously missed him. To the point where I left to another survivor. Boom. Down in 20 seconds. Infectious procs -- Quintin. I go for a tag and miss him again. He's way out of sight after my 1.5 seconds of fatigue are done. Later I saw him running next to another survivor and he was definitely faster than her, His speed meant he could outrun my post-blink lunge since I would blink as I would for a normal survivor. I DC'd and didn't even bother reporting.
Player Behavior: I love getting death threats because I slug. I love hearing the descriptions of horrible things that other players wish upon me, my family, my pets, my friends, etc for how I play in a video game. As a trauma victim, I love getting threatened with violence of every sort. Look, I am a woman and I used to play in COD and GTA online. I'm no stranger to trash talk and harassment, and I trash talk while I play, but I also understand that this is a video game and I don't actually mean anything I say towards that person irl. I would never dream of threatening another person over their virtual actions. I might make a snide remark/joke about it, but I really don't care. It upsets me more that people are allowed to get away with this behavior. I used to do a full report but don't even care anymore. It happens so much. What they say doesn't even necessarily bother me -- what bothers me is that people feel like this is okay. I get it's the internet blah blah blah but cmon. I got called a racial slur the other day ("disguised" to not get caught by the censorship) because I didn't allow someone to escape. By a smurf accout no less. A rank 20 with a flashlight who was constantly in my face clicking. Died first but stuck around.
The "Rules": This kinda goes with the above. Sometimes gens go fast. Big map, survivor spawn locations, bad luck, new killer, who knows. The killer, however, is expected to not get a kill fast even when that would be the most advantageous thing to do. When a survivor spawns on my ruin totem and cleanse it, I have no slowdown because I only use ruin alone. But I get accosted if I slug for pressure. A team 4 mans a gen and keep trying to stick around for flashlight saves/to pick up slugs and gets mad when I 4 man slug them. If I'm playing Nurse, I'm using infectious. If you stick around, that's not my fault. Not to mention how people come into streamer's chats just to call them names/be rude to them for playing. It's gross and really unfortunate, especially for smaller streamers.
Killer Strength: Say you're going up against a team which is of perfect skill level for you to face, they are all on comms. A good nurse wins. A mediocre Spirit wins. A really good pig might still lose. A really good Mikey might still lose. Hell, Mikey loads into corn and he loses. As someone who plays both Nurse and Pig, i've learned that some killers just can't keep up with survivors due to their powers. It's unfortunate. Also I've learned about something which i call "The Nurse Clause" where survivors tend to accept loss against a Nurse easier than they do a low tier killer. I have overall gotten more camp/tunnel/"you only won because..." on Pig than Nurse and I play Nurse far more than I do pig. Survivors tend to have a hard time accepting that they lost to a low tier killer, based on my own personal experiences.
The Grind: Nobody would run BBQ if it weren't for the BP. [Which is funny because, since so many killers run it, there are some (less-skilled, I'd assume) survivors asking for a nerf] When you start out playing you will get out perked. Since you haven't unlocked everything you just get to deal with perks winning the game for the opposition. If you play killer, BBQ is locked behind a paid killer. WGLF is situational and useless if the killer doesn't get anyone/someone else unhooks. Also our "extended" bloodhunt was a less than a week, iirc.
The "Events": You get to hook survivors as killer and repair gens as survivor!!! New interesting gameplay!! Also find a crown which is an exact replica of the event last year!! And the crown is nearly indistinguishable from last year's!! 2 extra lines. Okay.
Killer design: Hope you like holding W and predropping!! Nemmy, Trickster, Pinhead, Deathslinger, Oni when he angy, Pyramid Head are all super chase oppressive and you pretty much can only loop very safe loops. It has taken away the back and forth of looping and made it boring. Not to mention the other killers like this that aren't as new: Freddy, Doc, Clown, Spirit. Mikey in T3. Ghostie if you're marked, The pig if she ambushes (and then just run away), The Wraith when he uncloaks. So many killers just win at short loops. Also Huntress' hatchet hitbox makes playing against her miserable sometimes. Also made it hard for me to learn because they would hit objects with the invisible hitbox. And if someone can please explain the counterplay to the Twins, that'd be great. This is a large reason I stopped playing survivor, it got boring. Also Spirit being able to stand still as a "mindgame" and get a free hit is the most ridiculous thing ever.
Console Optimization: Playing against console players makes my games miserable sometimes, I can't imagine how it is playing on console now with all the new effects. DH freezes people on my screen, I get survivors who I can't tell if they are lag switching or just on an old console. Pinhead and his chains on console is probably even more of a nightmare than PC. And Pinhead is crashing the game on PC...
Pinhead: He's terrible, for starters. But playing him can literally crash your game. A lunge attack doesn't work. (Was watching a streamer last night and the amount of people who "bragged" about 360ing him without knowing about the bug was really cringe). The chains break to easily. The rng of chains is either amazing or horrible, but due to how they work, typically horrible. He's 100% addon reliant and straight up broken.
(Potentially) Boon Totems: we're gonna add another task for killers? Seriously? What about 110% killers (other than Spirit)? What about Nurse? I doubt you' be able to notice a Boon totem mid-blink and there are some nooks and crannies that you can't just blink into. I don't really want to float my 96% self around looking for a totem. If these totems are as strong as hexes, there are going to be very few killer players left. A Pig/Legion/Clown/Trapper/Hag/Mikey/Huntress/Deathslinger/Trickster doesn't have the time to go searching, even if they are strong killers.
That's it bois. I wanted to get it all out before I put dbd where it belongs -- in the trash. I was waiting to see how Pinhead's release went to solidify my choice, and it sure did make my choice easy. I'm uninstalling -- I'll see Vigo in the void perhaps. This game isn't worth my time and this is coming from someone who plays old school runescape, which, if you are unaware, is a game where it takes hundreds of hours doing repetitive actions to level up your character.
Goodbye, dbd. If you ever get better, I'll be back in a heartbeat, but I guess right now this is "the straw that broke the camel's back"
