Chipping in to the SBMM discussion

Hey!

Been following these forums a bit more than usual after the latest patch, just to see how people find the content and SBMM despite the bugs and stuff. Wanted to add my chip in the pile, so to speak.

In short, the SBMM has treated me well so far. Aside from something I kinda expected being players proactively bringing good perks and items, my matches as Killer have been as I expected; fair and tough, but not overwhelming. For context; almost the whole duration of playing this game since 2017, my builds and items have been more or less awkward. Stuff like, running Spies, Fire up, Shadowborne, even Coulrophobia on the regular. Or running Play with your food on Killers that don't need it at all (Huntress for example).

So having a system that rewards such a weirdo player like me for not running Hexes ever (I still don't) or slowdown perks (Surge and Deadlock are fun tho) for the most part, just makes me happy. And honestly, this game has been stressing the hell out of me the past year, with players being increasingly toxic and increasingly unfair with what they bring, including a map offering almost every match now. This initial impression of SBMM has really sweeped all that under the carpet.

I literally booted DBD up 10 minutes after the Twitter post about SBMM being up indefinetly and just picked Trapper with your average M1 build and some good addons and had a blast. Match was fair and pretty tough, but it also allowed me to play really relaxed and fulfill the good old "Hook -> Find -> Chase" loop, and not "Hook -> proxy -> slug for pressure -> snowball -> end game".

I'm not saying I never play more competetively (or as people here call it, sweating), but now I have the option of reserving that for my absolute favorite Killers that I don't mind being competetive with. And even then, I still plan on being competetive on my own rules; it still means goofy builds and little to no slowdown/hex perks.

It honestly gave me a new era of good feels for this game I haven't felt for a while now. I am still cautious of how this system works going forward, such as people abusing themselves into lower MMR brackets, but alot of these worries were also in the old system. And there is still the fact that addons, items and certain playstyles, matchups and maps don't really mix well with a MMR system, but I have faith that with the new data provided by SBMM the devs can start eliminating outliers out of the game, or changing their design.

Multiplayer games need to evolve with their community and while people still bring up "this is a slightly competetive party game" argument every now and then, I think this game has evolved from it a long time ago.

Hope this post adds some positivity to the forums, this place seems to often lack any shades of gray with the attitudes.
