SBMM is really exhausting

TL;DR: High MMR matches are stressful and expecting players to play them EVERY game is unrealistic and makes the game less enjoyable

This topic has been discussed to death so I'll try to make things quick.

  • I'm not saying the system isn't functioning well / benefiting players
  • This is an observation made on the killer side
  • My experience is different to yours, I could be getting unlucky

I think it's fair to say that any game played with equally skilled players at the highest level is stressful. I love a tense match, and part of the reason I've stuck with DbD all these years IS because of the experience of bettering myself as a player and facing increasingly skilled opponents.

However playing that cutthroat, stressful match EVERY game is pretty exhausting, and I personally wouldn't expect anyone to play that way if they're not queued for a competitive mode. The reality is that just because a player is good at the game doesn't mean they want to play the limited viability meta game every match.

You shouldn't be expected to purposefully lose games, or play a killer you don't want to in order to escape these games. Those casual goofy games with a Mad Grit basement build on Demo were you might see a clueless Claudette in a corner or a meme lord running MoM and No Mither, that's the life-blood of this game for me and it kept things fresh.

And call this a selfish statement but after over five years of questionable changes and slowly moving the game in a better direction I haven't expected anything of BHVR for a very long time, but having the ability to relax and enjoy one of my favorite games shouldn't be a huge ask.

Realistically there are four directions to go from here

  • Do nothing (BHVR approved!)
  • Bite the bullet of splitting the player base and make a competitive mode (Bad Idea)
  • Revert / Change the SBMM system (Highly unlikely)
  • Make more killers viable / General Balancing changes (Maybe by 2029)

I'm not quitting the game or protesting BHVR, I know how they operate and I'm very used to it by now. Win or Lose playing DbD is just really exhausting now, and I think there are a lot of players that would benefit from something being changed.

Either way I really hope the system is working well for most people, and maybe things will get better soon.
