Survivor losing items when Killer DCs

This seems very sporadic and I'm not sure if it's a bug that needs reporting. I've just had a match on Lerys where we were there for no more than about 10 seconds before the killer DCd. When I got back to the lobby I'd lost my item. This has happened a few times and I don't understand the logic behind it, if it is indeed a choice not a bug, because it counts as an escape when the killer DCs so I should keep my item, no?

Are you sure it's lost? I've heard that it disappears from your load out screen but is still added back to your inventory. On the other hand, that might only be if the DC happens before the game finishes loading.
