Why play names blink in white color?

Usually all names are in gray colors, but sometimes they blink white and slowly fade back to gray.

Are you talking about in-game? If so, typically it's if something about their status has changed, i.e. they've been injured, become broken, got hooked, unhooked, healed, etc. It goes red name -> white -> fades to gray.
