Is the nightmare good?
I just played against the nightmare for the first time and he seemed to be amazing but as usual I come to the forums before buying.

Depends on your definition of 'good'. Can you get a 4k with him? Sure. Will he get a 4K as easily as a lot of other killers? Probably not.
Freddy is one of those killers that when you're newer at the game, he can seem quite strong, but against more experienced survivors, he starts becoming much harder to be effective. That doesn't mean he can't kill all 4 survivors even if they're experienced, he'll just struggle a lot more than a chunk of other killers on the roster. This is due to the nature of his power - whilst he has pretty good map mobility with his gen teleport (and therefore synergises well with Generator perks), he's also reliant on survivors being in the dream world for his snares/dream pallets to be effective so if you're chasing an awake survivor, he's got no power to use against them yet. His add-ons are also not overly strong.
That said, he's also a fairly simple killer to understand, so you can become effective with him fairly quickly. I'd suggest watching some gameplay of him and see if you enjoy his playstyle - if so, go for it - but I'd say there's much stronger killers on the roster available if you have limited shards/money and want a killer who is more powerful.

His anti-loop is pretty weak and the snare placement is buggy. Dream Pallets often do not fool survivors.
Dream Projection is pretty much useless without information perks like BBQ and Chili
The dream world obliviousness is not that effective, it just makes it so freddy doesn't work with stealth or terror radius perks which is a shame.
He has the worst add-on set in the game. So many add-ons that do the same thing but with weak side effects. His best add-on is the one that causes survivors to start the trial in the dream world. It's not strong at all but it's as good as it gets.
Overall i think you should only get freddy if you like the look of the dream world or you just want to play freddy and don't care about anything else. For the average player i think they will find freddy to be a boring and weak killer.

He’s generally considered on the weaker side because until someone is in Dream state they aren’t affected his snares or fake pallets. He has a teleport which is useful but it also gives a good amount of warning before Freddy appears so survivor aren’t likely to still be near the gen when Freddy appears. His snares are ok against sleeping survivors but not the most powerful ability either compared to things other killers can do in terms of zoning.
So he’s good enough that you can still win with him but I think a lot of people who play him regularly wouldn’t mind him getting a buff.

As I Freddy-Main (one of the last remaining) I can tell you, that he is one of the worst killers in the game. His addons are absolutely terrible, the worst in the game. He has ONE Addon (Iridecent] which is good. Everything else is really bad.
He received over 12 nerfs over the time, you can check that out on the wiki.
However: against low-mmr-survivors he will guarantee you 4Ks, because they dont know what to do. You can use the teleport for faking it so beginners will turn around and run into you, when u pretend to teleport in front of them. Also u can use that to trigger Dead Man Switch or to teleport for Call of Brine/Eruption. However, before the perk-overhaul, all "his" perks like Tinkerer, Pop, Ruin, Dead Mans were stronger.
You need to know that he cannot use Terror-Radius-related perks like Coulrophobia, because you want them asleep and in the dream, you dont have a TR.
I do recommend you to go for someone else until he gets buffs or an addon-pass. When will that happen? Hopefully asap. He is bottom-3 of the pickrate for every killer in the game.
