Time limited outfits...
So, looking at the Trailer for the newest DBD event (which, tangent, Haunted By Daylight? Babes where's the creativity) it looks pretty cool. I like the event, I like the new Event cosmetics, I like the Event Tome cosmetics too.
But one thing struck me when watching the Trailer that's really left a bad taste in my mouth. Time limited cosmetics.
For those who missed it, the outfits for Dwight and Jane are both time-limited exclusives (as you can see in the "Available for a limited time only" sticker)
And I just need to know, who asked for this. Why are we, in a paid for game, with paid for DLCs, locking cosmetics now behind time walls too?
Who asked for this?! Why are we gatekeeping cosmetics from those who aren't playing during the time frame, or from those who simply can't afford to purchase them? Why punish the worst off who need to save their money to get something they like?
Make it make sense. This is the type of behaviour I'd expect from Hi-Rez, not you. I'm so genuinely disappointed.
What a horrible idea. The more I see this in games, the less I spend.

Yeah, this is certainly concerning...
Time-limited cosmetics are a pretty predatory marketing tactic, and if I recall, didn't BHVR say they didn't want exclusive cosmetics in the game?

@GoodBoyKaru Sorry for immediately dumping a wall of text but you made this thread before I could submit the one I was going to make and they would be merged together anyway.
Tl;dr: Terrible decision. Goes against BHVRs standards that they have set a bit over a year ago.
Under "QUALITY OF LIFE UPDATES":
Progress beyond Tier 70 of the Archives and earn new Deep Rift Outfits, variations of new Outfits exclusive to The Rift.
> exclusive to The Rift.
Exclusives are now apparently considered to be quality of life.
Overall a, let's say, interesting, decision to create more exclusives, and for Halloween to boot. The Dwightcrow charm used to be exclusive (available from codes that were given out by streamers), and it was made obtainable again for the following reason:
Not at all, there were a lot of players who couldn't get this code the last time around and we wanted to rectify that. Also we have a lot of new players since then, there's no reason that they should be denied the opportunity to get this charm.

The Dwightcrow post is from a bit over a year ago. What has changed in that one year? How did exclusives become acceptable in that one year?

Exclusivity sadly sells.
13 -
They asked about this like, 3 times in the questionaires, too.
Starting to think folks didn't quite understand what they meant with "time-limited cosmetics."
23 -
What an awful, predatory business tactic. Just as I finally get a reliable method of income that can support me fully they go ahead and pull this to effectively confirm I won't be spending nearly as much on this game as I'd have liked to.
Oh well, at least now I have an excuse to finally start saving to take up German tuition again.
20 -
I feel the same way about rifts/battlepass stuff sometimes
But at least there's a chance of that stuff coming to the store eventually
3 -
That’s a shame because both outfits are really well designed. I only was looking to get the killer outfits though. Based on how well they look.
5 -
The whole "Deep Rift" thing is whatever, I don't really mind it. Single cosmetic pieces and charms were already exclusive to the rift, so that isn't much of a difference there. However, having time-limited store cosmetics kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
6 -
Yeah, I'm not a fan of exclusivity either. I'd much rather the costumes simply be for sale in the store at some point then available once and never again.
8 -
They had time limited cosmetics last year, and they're bringing them back for this event. It's not that bad
3 -
It's all about the money. "Hey you can get this, but ooooonly this week, better buy it before it disappeara so you can say you got it." I noticed in the player survey I did for dbd the other week it asked me what events I liked the idea of limited time cosmetics on. Notably it didn't ask me if I liked the concept of limited time cosmetics or not lol.
2 -
What was that? Pretty sure this is new ground.
3 -
They always say that for the event and then later on they end up in the rift or for sale in the shop on a discount
6 -
Who asked for this?! Why are we gatekeeping cosmetics from those who aren't playing during the time frame, or from those who simply can't afford to purchase them? Why punish the worst off who need to save their money to get something they like?
These are all very good questions that will almost certainly go unanswered (yes I am being very cynical here).
The battlepass system (in general, not just in this game) is, with one exception, always hostile players and just overall terrible. The one good example of a good battlepass system that I know of is Deep Rock Galactic. Absolutely everything from that battlepass becomes available in-game after it ends. That's not just me guessing that this happens based on past patterns, that was officially confirmed by the developers (See: "Is all of the content in the Performance Pass going to be time-limited or can I get it after the season is over?"):
Fun fact: When the Dbd battlepass was first added there was (and still isn't) a confirmation that everything will return. The FAQ / announcement said "most cosmetics will return after a period of 6 months". "Most" is not "all". Technically there could already be exclusives in the past Rifts that will never return and we wouldn't know.
This. For examples, see scalpers and NFTs. Both require exclusivity to some degree.
But at least there's a chance of that stuff coming to the store eventually
BIG DISAGREE ON THIS. It does not say that anywhere that I can see. In fact the way that the announcement is worded makes it sound like the exact opposite is the case: That these new "Deep Rift Outfits" will never return. (Disclaimer: This is my opinion based on my reading of the announcement. I could be entirely wrong. Please read the exact wording on your own and form your opinion which can obviously be different from mine! I am not making a factual statement here)
It really is a trash business tactic. And the worst thing. IT'S LITERALLY SO EASY TO MAKE IT BETTER. Sell old Rifts. That's literally all. They count 10 bucks or so currently if you convert real money to Auric Cells or so I think. Sell them for 20. Or 30 or whatever. As long as the price is reasonable that solves all of the problems. Players who really want even just one of the cosmetics and don't care about the rest have a chance to decide for themselves if they want to spend X amount of money and Y amount of time grinding out the old Rifts to get the thing(s) they care about.
I don't know anything about marketing or business so maybe I am missing something super important that makes it impossible to do this from a business perspective but all I see are positives. BHVR can literally make even more money by selling the old Rifts. Players can get items they might literally have been physically unable to get because they didn't play Dbd yet when they were in the Rift. It's just good for everyone!
(I sure hope there haven't been like 50 more posts I want to reply to in the time it took me to write this)

I really didn’t like the last time-locked community event we had, where one of the cosmetic pieces (it was Haddie or Dredge) was time locked to the last few days of the event.
This meant if someone had a busy schedule and couldn’t play every day, they might have missed out on the cosmetic piece, because BHVR didn’t allow us unlock it until the event was almost over.
13 -
We know it wont be that available for limited time it will return next halloween with shard price.

On 2 different surveys, one from awhile ago and the one we just took, I had questions about time limited cosmetics. On the most recent survey it asked if there was any reason to be against it. Obviously they already had their minds made up about it if we are getting them in the event immediately after the survey.
Honestly I hate that they are doing this. It's predatory and leaves a bad taste. Also it's pretty crappy they JUST announced they'd be making original character cosmetics available for shards after 4 weeks only to have "time limited" cosmetics as a loophole around that.
7 -
This is actually the first time that specific phrase has been used in recent memory. Twisted Masquerade, Midnight Grove, 5th Anniversary, and Eternal Blight don't have that phrase and don't have that tag in the showcase. Combined with the recent Player Feedback Survey mentioning time-limited cosmetics and my hopes aren't high.
Of course if a dev will prove me wrong definitively, I would absolutely love that. I want nothing more than to be incorrect about this.
12 -
Joining everyone here to say that this new "time-limited" to buy feature is goddamn awful. There are already a ridiculous amount of games who doing this that repulses me and I really hope BHVR can correct themselves on this.
There is no fun in being oppressed to buy something in such a short window because "it will never come back". Oh really? You only have a short stock of those outfits you can sell? This is the same BS tactics that the cryptobros uses, and I am so ashamed that BHVR would fall so low.
If this is the path Dead by Daylight is headed, well I cannot recommend this game anymore to my friends.
7 -
FOMO yeahhhhhhh
4 -
No time window is going to stop me from get that Dweet one. Toilet paper Mummy outfit. Might be his funniest one yet.
2 -
Exactly, it was asked multiple times in their Feedback Surveys. And I remember saying all the time that time-exclusive cosmetics are bad. And I would expect the majority of the community to think this way.
So them doing it is... bad. Really bad.
6 -
They were on such a good streak of actually listening to us, too. And now here we are.
8 -
This does not look like it will be the case with those two cosmetics.
Usually, when a Rift-Cosmetic is introduced, it is exclusive for some time until it hits the Shop. For themed Cosmetics (like Halloween) it will take around a year, so we can expect Mikaelas Witch-Outfit to be part of the Store this Halloween.
However, those Outfits look like Store-Outfits and with them being available for a limited time, it probably means that you will be able to get them now and then never again. And this really should not be the case.
3 -
I'm extremely concerned. They've made noise about this in the last two feedback surveys, and I remember the general consensus on the forums was "hell no." So either the feedback reflected a different story, or they decided they didn't care and went ahead with it anyway.
I would be okay with these cosmetics cycling, such as only being purchasable at Halloweentime, but "you've gotta buy it now or it's gone forever" is scummy and I despise it. Who wanted this?
Candidly, ######### FOMO. It's a cheap marketing strategy and it brings nothing good to a game.
12 -
They're desperate for the last bit of money they can get I think. Abusing people with FOMO to fork out some cash.
9 -
The worst thing is that I'm a Jane main and I really like that cosmetic, so I'm almost certainly going to end up enabling this trash. Uughh. This is exactly how they get you. ######### everything about this. Whatever happened to phasing out exclusivity? Do they even have any excuses for how this will improve the game in any way? Do they have a justification for how this is fair to everyone who isn't active right now, doesn't have a stable financial situation (hello, speaking), or hasn't joined yet? 'Cause they said a lot of words about that when it came to reducing exclusivity, and yet here we are. I'd kill for a candid discussion of this with the marketing team, but I know I'm not going to get one.
Yeah, real cool that you asked us if we wanted this, BHVR. Very "Truth is, game was rigged from the start" moment.
9 -
I just realized that I am dumb and that there are time limited outfits (in the store probably) as well as exclusive battlepass / Rift cosmetics and the outfits in the OP are likely not the battlepass cosmetics (though maybe they are, who knows).
Double the bullshit! Amazing.
🦆🦂
7 -
I was thinking how Jane is one of the survivors that doesn't get cosmetics often and how crappy this is for those mains. Like if you don't buy it BHVR goes "see no one buys Jane cosmetics anyway" but if you do buy it you're enabling a terrible business practice. You're in a lose/lose with BHVR.
6 -
No the 2 cosmetics shown for Dwight + Jane are confirmed to be in the store. The Deep Rift (ie permanent Rift exclusives) are just alternate versions of the already existing Rift cosmetics, so think the additional Ghostface masks shown.
Because we need more Charms, they couldn't have just stuck those in the already existing 70 tiers.
3 -
They asked this question in one of their recent surveys, and I said NO! I don't want time limited cosmetics. Apparently not enough people agreed to get them to stop this idea.
14 -
Exactly. Thank you. This puts so much pressure on potentially any cosmetic moving forward and I loathe this so much. Nobody needed this! Nobody wanted this! I'd ask why, but I already know the answer! Argh. I don't want to see the (hypothetical) first Plague outfit dropped in a year and a half, go "ehh, I kinda like it I guess?" and have a two week timeframe to decide whether to get it before it's ~gone forever~
More likely, people did vote against it and they just shrugged and did it anyway.
6 -
Because today is apparently terrible-ideas-day I want to post mine!
In addition to only being available for a certain time, the cosmetics are now rented. You decide how long you want to rent them for, and after that time they are removed from your inventory forever. You can only "initiate" the rent process during a limited time.
Or! Outfits now have a limited number of charges, and are also (of course) only available during a limited time. Every time you use an outfit it loses charges and once the charges are gone you can never, ever use that outfit ever again. Due to a bug linked cosmetics (because everyone loves these, and that's why they still need to be a thing!) consume 3x the amount of charges.
BHVR you may now hire me as your chief of marketing.
Some spreadsheet magic probably spat out the result that by making limited cosmetics there is a 0.001% increase in profits, even when taking lowered player satisfaction into account, and that's why it's happening.
🦆🦂
4 -
So ######### glad I never spent a cent and will never do on one of their skins
Anti-consumerism at its finest, greedy little hellspawns
10 -
Well hopefully that means they would still be available for future Halloween events? Like, time limited but not only one timeframe? Pretty please?
3 -
Jane looks... not good imo
1 -
Being restricted to multiple timeframes is still awful. Do not try to negotiate with that, it could lead to more awful practices.
5 -
Well. I am not negotiating. It’s already a done deal.
they may change it of course but then, just to be clear, I would be completely for not limited at all.
2 -
I kind of disagree? It can be annoying, but it's not "shell out your money NOW or lose FOREVER" annoying. There's a big difference between having to wait a few months to get something and never being able to get that thing again, to the point where I don't think they're comparable.
I would much rather have cycling cosmetics than permaretiring cosmetics.
I'm also skeptical we have any negotiating power at all when the marketing department's MO has been to power through regardless of community feedback. Remember cosmetic sets? At this point, I'd take whatever scraps I can get above rock bottom.
5 -
...
10 -
Welp, guess me and my tight budget don't matter.
2 -
sometimes i worry i'm too cynical when it comes to this game then this kind of thing happens and i realize there is no such thing
i really hope people don't buy these. if this becomes a regular occurrence, along with some other reasons that'll be apparent very soon i think i'm done with this game. whatever enjoyment i get out of it isn't worth a blatant lack of human decency from the company making it.
7 -
BHVR is very much a company. They've been really behaving as one a lot lately.
4 -
And I am tired of having to compromise and to choose between two awful things because one isn't "that" bad.
Cosmetics being available in multiple time-frames is bad and pointless, at this point, just make it available all the time.
Cosmetics being available in only one time-frame is BS and should not be ignored: any validation coming from the community would result in more time-limited fuckery. I might be the only one to have done so but I responded in those surveys that they should add charms to the in-game store to prevent any FOMO at all.
5 -
I responded in those surveys that they should add charms to the in-game store to prevent any FOMO at all.
This literally gives them more money and it makes players happy.
But no. Exclusives are better apparently ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
🦆🦂
4 -
Can't say I'm impressed with the idea. I have a feeling these cosmetics will be returning, even if not until 2023. The backlash would probably prompt it.
It's not as concerning for me, as I am not really bothered about buying them, but the practice of "limited time only" reminds me of those tacky tv channels that try to sell crap.
One real issue though is that it can prey on a compulsive mindset. There is a relation between compulsion and addiction, and people with addictive personalities that could be attributed to poor mental health may well feel anxiety and panic into buying these cosmetics.
I understand BHVR is keen to be all-inclusive, but it feels like they haven't fully understood the impact these decisions can have upon people with certain conditions. Maybe their decision-making didn't take this into consideration.
5 -
The level of entitlement in this community never ceases to amaze me. "Everyone should be able to get everything!" I disagree. I'd prefer if there were ways to earn them than just buy them, but I completely disagree with this entire concept that exclusive, rare, or even unique items are bad.
2 -
You are the reason capitalism is able to exist.
12 -
Capitalism is the only way the world works. Contrary to what some believe, the overwhelming majority of people are not altruistic and are only motivated by self interest. Capitalism is why all these revolutionary disease treatments and cures get made. The world runs on self interest. If you want something you should have to give something of value for it. Sorry if you haven't learned that yet, but you will in time when/if you have to actually earn a living.
8 -
This is the kind of crap Hi-Rez keeps doing with Paladins
You want the cosmetic but you don't have the money for it at the moment and then the next few days it's gone
Time limited stuff is dumb
