Trapper kicking gens does nothing

I play on PS5, when kicking a generator with the trapper it does no damage. It will set off flash bomb traps if one is there. Generator speed does not regress no matter how many times it’s kicked. Challenges that require a killer to damage generators can not be done.
Perks like Jolt are the only way to slow down generators.

Are you holding down the kick button until the animation finishes and the generator sparks?
