Killers can hit a survivor that's behind them

I noticed this in my killer rounds recently, I missed a survivor and hit a wall, but the survivor was directly behind me and somehow I hit the survivor, I've noticed this in my survivor matches as well, is this a bug? Or was it intentional? As I'm confused I went to test out if I could hit a survivor directly behind me I lunged forward but still hit the survivor behind me.
I'm a bit confused by this because it's unfair for survivors to get hit when the killer isn't even facing their direction.
