This may or may not be nothing, but in the off chance the killer is a "Windy-deer" us over here in the Appalachian area can not say "that" word as it is 1000% taboo. The TLDR is basically if you don't say it's name or look thru the trees you will be safe. It may sound silly but us over here take it serious.

It's possible, though Hag fits the bill as one per her lore. I've always assumed that's what she is.
