Please, no more map variants. (MacMillan Variant Rant)
To start off, I am not saying that Realms should not have more maps added to them, I think that is actually a positive. What I am saying is that the variants such as the ones recently added to MacMillian Estate have more negatives than positives.
1: Map Knowledge - It is no surprise that a new player will not have every map memorized, so it is important to have a static shape with important markers such as main building. However, this gets thrown away with Variation making the game more confusing to learn for those maps specifically. Badham Preschool was the only map with Variants, but I would say it's okay because it is roughly two different shapes and the maps are fairly the same quality. The new variations of MacMillan DRAMATICALLY change shape, as well as a change in building locations, which not only makes it harder to learn the maps but also makes it harder to...
2: Balance - Lets take Badham's example again, overall the 5 variants are different but still have similar balance qualities across each map with how the main building is placed in relation to other structures. For MacMillan, again the shape being such a dramatic difference ultimately causes the variant to be more imbalanced compared to the original. The main building's new placement also contribute to this imbalance. For example, in my own experience Ironworks of Misery II feels awful to play as survivor while Suffocation Pit II felt really bad as killer. Of course, results vary with who is playing but on average I feel as though these maps feel worse from personal experience.
Overall, the point I guess I am trying to say is that adding such variations, while adding more to the game, just makes it harder for some. I would love to hear what other people think on this topic.
Honestly, I would like variants removed, but that probably will not happen. So I would really like if they reworked these variants to some degree. Also, add the roman numeral to say what version of the variant it is. Or, maybe it does already and I have not seen I am not too sure...
