New UI is very bad

Hello. I don’t normally post on this forum, but I feel like it’s necessary at this point. I’m a graphic designer, and I think the changes made to the character select UI are egregiously terrible and need to be changed back to what they were before.

The most important thing you learn as a designer is that things like menus, apps, and websites need to be as intuitive as possible. What these UI changes have done is actively make the menu less intuitive.

The worst part of the UI change is that the customizations tab is part of the character select screen. The instinct for someone playing a game isn’t to check the character list for their cosmetics. If it worked just slightly differently (i.e. clicking the character in the select screen shows you a menu with your cosmetics) it wouldn’t be as big of a deal. This is the way that other games operate (like Overwatch, Apex, etc). But the way it is now, it makes the top area of the screen feel incredibly cluttered. And Dead by Daylight is more complicated than those games, since you need to account for both character builds and character customization, so the mobile-looking UI just doesn’t work.

Why are the loadout numbers at the top of the screen, above the “customization” button? The customization button above the store button (the way it was before) was very intuitive. If you wanted to see more options, the button to do so was directly below. By trying to reduce the amount of buttons on the left side of the screen, you’ve made it a lot worse and difficult to navigate the right side of the screen. If you really feel that the customization menu needs to be a part of a submenu, it would make more sense for it to be a new tab under the “builds” section; that way you can change everything about your character in one menu, including both your build and their outfit.

Don’t even get me started on the charm select screen. Clicking the charm slot buttons obscures the search bar and sorting options, which defeats the entire purpose of this change. The fact that you have to click off of the charm to close the menu in order to search for the charm you want is silly.

Lastly, putting new characters at the top of the menu throws off how things have operated for years. So does putting the red exclamation mark on characters who have new store cosmetics in the select screen. It comes across very poorly.

I understand that people worked very hard on this new UI, and for that I’m very sorry. It just doesn’t work with the game that DBD is. Thank you for reading.

this is a pretty good breakdown.

all i have to say is, this new menu feels like i'm looking for the right buttons in a menu.

while the old ui, and, in my opinion, as a frequent player of video games, good ui, makes me think more about the system than the menu.

i was changing my cosmetic loadout, now i'm navigating the cosmetic screens.
