Packet Sniffer Defeats Anon Mode

Title says it, had a survivor player yesterday using Wireshark data mine the game in real time and connect me in-game, in anon mode, to my Steam profile.

Oh, they also threatened to DDOS and doxx me, and also told me to kill myself.

So thanks guy for validating why I play in anon mode and also BHVR would be totally cool if you cleaned up your community. Not sure if anything can be done about the packet sniffer but should it really be as easy as just running an open-source, free tool?

Great catch, didn't even put those two together like that. Gonna to append it to the report. Thank you!

You'd think someone so blatantly cheating would just keep their stupid mouths shut and hope to not be noticed but nope!

Funnily enough, what tipped me off wasn't the offering initially - It was the perks. Those perks are strangely very common for cheaters to use all together. Pattern recognition brain doing its thing again.

Then I noticed the offering and yeah, it became immediately obvious.

    Glad I was of help!

    To wit:

    7th Anniversary event ended July 13th, 2023.

Nic Cage wasn't available until July 25th. Very good catch.

Ah yeah - Fogwise + Hyperfocus is the big clue as well - he's using cheats to always hit great skill checks, so he stacks up perks that play into that.

Confirmed, you can't have a Terrormisu on Nicolas Cage. You can have a Screech Cobbler though! I know because I played a lot of Cage over Anniversary this year.

This is a cheater, OP. Report them.

I did right after the game for the abusive chat part, then appended the report with the cheating part. Also found him on the Epic and Steam platforms and will be working to get him banned from those as well.

Educate my console noob arse some please, what is this Packet Sniffer?

Ethernet protocol - the type of data transmission protocol your console uses to talk over wifi/wired network connections - is broken up into chunks of data called "packets." There are programs out there called "packet sniffers" that can look into these packets to see data that normally you would not be able to see until it was used by the receiving end and presented back to you via an application or OS.

In our case here with DbD, the game still needs to track who I am as a player so my player data is included in the packets and then masked at the application (game) layer by DbD via anon mode. Someone with a packet sniffer however can look into the packet and see my player data.

There is no legitimate use of a packet sniffer when it comes to DbD and generally is indicative of a cheater.

And all that presumes the player was being honest about using Wireshark. It's more likely they were using some other tool to cheat that also exposes player data thru anon mode, most likely by looking into DbD data loaded into RAM and then mining/manipulating it, and simply said they were using Wireshark in an attempt to be deceptive.

Appreciate the explanation. Sounds nafarious for this game, and like something I cannot even use being on console. Also I cannot even use their Anonymous Mode in the first place because I'm on Xbox.

XBox runs a version of the Windows OS so it's possible to side-load cheats onto it, just something most people don't have the skill set to do.

First this should be a report to BHVR, Second you should mask their identity on the pictures in public forums such as these.
Its against the rules to show their names.

If you don't these posts will likely get removed and any input and back and forth we could have here wont be possible.
I'm sorry this has happened to you, some people are total crazy these days and I hope nobody runs into a person like that. YUCK.

"First this should be a report to BHVR"

Thanks for your opinion kid, I'm days ahead of you there. I posted this in the feedback section to ensure BHVR was aware that free, open-source tools were circumventing their anonymous mode. I spent at least 30 mins putting together the report to BHVR before I even logged into these forums.

"you should mask their identity on the pictures in public forums such as these."

LOL nope, no expectation of privacy when playing a game in a public queue. Besides which - and this one's REALLY going to blow your mind - the player could've been in anon mode themselves if they really didn't want someone knowing who they were. Glad they weren't though, since it allowed me to track them down on the Epic platform and begin the ban procedures against them.

Cheaters get named and shamed, especially when they participate in or threaten to participate in criminal behavior. DDOS attacks are illegal. Doxxing is illegal nearly everywhere. Encouraging suicide over the internet is also largely illegal.

'If you don't these posts will likely get removed"

Hush up and run along now.

They're referring to the player shaming rules here in this particular forum, where they regularly delete posts that show other DBD player names, instead of blocking them out.
