Turning off Anti-Aliasing breaks a lot of hair cosmetics and makes them transparent
When playing this game, I noticed that turning off anti-aliasing breaks many hair cosmetics. Below is a list of some (not all) characters that, when AA is turned off, will make their hair transparent:
Yun-Jin's Junji-Ito skin
Ada Wong's newest skin (the one that was released in 2v8 in February)
Leon Kennedy's Agent 8 skin
Rize Kamishiro
Ken Kaneki
David King's Tokyo Ghoul Mask
Jake Park's Tokyo Ghoul Mask
Jonah Vasquez's Tokyo Ghoul Mask
Unknown's Tokyo Ghoul Mask (especially worse on this character)
Renato Lyra's Hide's outfit (Tokyo Ghoul collab skin)
Taurie Cain's default and two bob hairstyle store skins
Some images are included below, but they are by no means comprehensive, as there are some hairstyles that I forgot. I'm not sure on the technical details of why this occurs… However, when I looked this up, I understood that BHVR and many other triple-A companies follow an industry standard technique of creating hair cards for characters where semi-transparent alpha textures is used to make the appearance of fine full hair instead of using complex geometry, where each strand of hair is rendered on top of a character's head, so that PCs don't catch fire trying to render everything.
When AA is turned off, graphics are rendered without smoothing between pixels that the semi-transparent alpha textures rely on. Aside from hair breaking, we notice that some clothes and objects in the game appear jagged (see the image below), which is understandable and not a significant issue. However, when the semi-transparent alpha relies on AA, it causes numerous unintended effects, such as breaking the hair in the images shown below.
Some hair cosmetics (not only in this game but also in others, such as The Last of Us) rely on semi-transparent alpha textures to blend hair into a nearly see-through effect, creating a sense of hair ending at the ends and other realistic-looking effects. When AA is turned off, it not only improperly renders the semi-transparent edges, but also cuts off areas where the alpha texture coverage is supposed to be. The textures appear to be missing, creating a transparent effect that we can see in the images. That's why in the picture, you can see Taurie's scalp underneath the hair. All of the hair mentioned in the list looks "cut open" or "missing" where there should be fine strands of hair. This weird effect, which I call "anti-AA" hair, is of such poor quality that I don't think the quality assurance team was looking at it during testing.
Newer cosmetics do not feature this problem. Vittorio's and Taurie's Blood Moon Cosmetics appear fine. Skull Merchant's Rift Hair, Haddie's Rift Hair, etc., have had their textures smoothed to look excellent, even on lower settings and with AA turned off.
I sincerely call for BHVR to go back and re-do some of the hair cosmetics so that they don't keep releasing these alpha textures that break when they rely on AA for smoothing. I understand that some people may feel that BHVR doesn't have the best track record for staying on top of their fixes, but people are paying money for low-quality products that aren't acceptable. Some people play this game on lower settings and with AA turned off since the game drops frames even on good specs.
If anyone feels the same way, please share your thoughts or even pictures to showcase this.
