Fog vials are significantly more opaque on specific maps, making them impossible to counter.

SUMMARY OF THE ISSUE:

Fog vial visuals are inconsistent depending on what map you're on. On some maps, your screen will be turned solid white--even without the iri add-on changing the opacity--making it impossible to see anyone or anything within the cloud. My friend and I tested every single map (except Gideon, since it is possibly still bugged with vials?). So out of 43 maps (would be 44 including Gideon), 16 (~37%) are bugged:

  • Garden of Joy
  • Dead Sands (depends on ambient lighting)
  • Eyrie of Crows (depends on ambient lighting)
  • Father Campbell's Chapel
  • Disturbed Ward
  • Dead Dawg
  • Sanctum of Wrath
  • Family Residence
  • Badham (main basement is especially bad)
  • Grim Pantry
  • Pale Rose
  • Temple of Purgation (thicker, but not necessarily brighter, and varies depending on if you're inside or outside of main)
  • Mother's Dwelling (same visually as above)
  • Groaning Storehouse (thicker outside main, fine inside main)
  • Shelter Woods (not thick inside main, very thick outside main)
  • Ironworks of Misery

These screenshots were all taken with no filters and gamma set to normal. My friend was using a blue fog vial with no add-ons (though the only add-on that changes opacity is the iri). It does not matter which fog vial or add-on you use on these maps; they all look this way. The iri add-on only makes it worse.

Also notable: fog vials on Coldwind are markedly darker and grayer than any other map, making them very easy to see through. Otherwise, the 16 maps listed here will always have bright white fog vials.

The reason I'm reporting this is because nerfing fog vials' opacity will not fix this. People were complaining about them being OP because of what you will see in screenshots below, which is not how fog vials are intended to look. When they look like that, they are actually almost impossible to counter because your entire screen is turned white.

PLATFORM: Steam

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW THE ISSUE OCCURRED:

  1. Equip fog vial.
  2. Load into one of the 16 affected maps.
  3. Use the fog vial.
  4. Cause massive, opaque white screen for everyone in the area of the fog vial.

Please note I forgot to include Sanctum of Wrath and Family Residence in this collection, but they look identical to these screenshots.

    This is really interesting.

Maybe this is why some people say they can see through them just fine, while others say you can't see anything.

That explains why I got so much value from them on a Dead Dawg game I had.

Fog Vial Bug #1: A map's natural fog effects, like from this swamp map, effect's the fog vial's fog effect.

Can the fog vials please set the opacity to a certain number, instead of increasing opacity by a certain number? This is the swamp map's natural fog effect, interacting with the fog vial.

Fog Vial Bug #2: Environmental lighting from the sky is affecting the fog vial's fog effect.

Fog Vial Bug #3: Environmental lighting from objects, like this fire barrel, is also affecting the fog vial's fog effect.

Additional Note: Having a +range addon, means the fog vials need to be balanced around having that addon. +Range doesn't just make the fog area bigger, it also makes it more difficult to see through an entire fog cloud, because the killer is looking through an extra 4 meters of fog effect.

Another Additional Note: It's awkward that the fog scales based on range. As in, trying to see a survivor when there is 10 meters of fog between the killer and survivor, is way harder than trying to see a survivor when there is 4 meters of fog between the killer and survivor. It basically means that the fog vials can have opacity nerfs, and still completely hide the survivor, because the fog cloud functionally "stacks with itself".

You do realize that all of the things that you’ve labeled as “bugs” are exactly how a fog operates in real life with different environments and conditions, including light.

Aside from that, how many days ago are these pictures from? Because ain’t nobody’s fog looking like that now.

No way these screenshots are recent, this isn't how the fog looks now after they gutted the vials.

The pictures were taken yesterday, after the patch.

Yes, people’s fog does look like that, even with zero filters. It’s literally why I’ve been complaining that the fog vials are bugged.

This was taken the day before the patch, but the changes really did nothing to make this bug any better. Here's a comparison.
