Doomposting about future of the game, maybe
I watched the video from MintSkull. It seriously made me think.
In short, who don’t want to look at his video: the game in its current state will never be free from technical issues, we will continue to receive limited killers in the future that are a collection of past game mechanics; perks that repeat the principles of past perks; broken items from events, and so on. Updating the engine will never solve this problem, because all these 9 years of development were writing an online service on blueprint, not taking the game too seriously. Not to blame devs, they didn’t count on this project before that much, but now look where all of us.
And if they try to make a new game to solve spaghetti code issue, like DBD 2, then it is unprofitable, because of the licensing issues. And here I also can’t blame them. They already had few games that are basically dead now, company not interested in taking risks.
So only option BHVR have now is to squeeze profit from new players and new content, even if it is the quality of recycled fast food. Many, even old players, blindly buy new content, not imagining that this game can be played without it. We are used to spending money on it, and that's it.
But if looking at this forum, and many others social media related to this game, many of us are now disappointed for various reasons.
- Bugs.
- «Power creep» of specific side.
- Tryhards, like sfws or competitive killers.
- Unbalanced system.
For the last month, I have no desire to spend a penny on this game. All these balance issues have been disappointing me. But people think that this is, oh my God, the fault of the players who complain on the forums and somewhere else. Not a long sequence of technical and design decisions by the developers. Indeed. I am "sure" that my personal comment to simply add for vials charges became the culprit of the fact that this item is now useless. Yes, because it is very easy for the majority to blame a part of the audience, because it is much easier than admitting that the game has been in stagnation for the last year and each side is fighting against the system, and not against the players in a competitive way.
Just for a fact: killer will never stop fighting for their 60% killrate, while sfws or abuse from survivors exist. And survivors won’t stop complain about unfairness of solo and tunnelling. And for me, both sides have absolutely valid reasons to have their opinion. Such arguments probably the only way to keep this game alive, because without them it’s technically unplayable and not enjoyable game at all.
I want to go back to the video from MintSkull again. His point of view literally leads to the fact that in technical terms, the problems of balance and bugs cannot be completely resolved. What happens is that the game is stagnant and technically dead. And looking at how my friends left this game, preferring other online services like Marvel Rivals or Identity V, I myself am already wondering how much time it will take me to finally accept the fact that I am playing into something that looks more like a financial bubble that could blow out under the massive influx of new players after the release of ghoul and fnaf chapter.
The significant increase in toxicity in this fandom, which has been spoken about by streamers on more than one occasion, hints at this. We just hate each other and devs basically, but this will never resolve actual issue, I’m afraid of. I love potential of this game, I’m huge slasher and horror enjoyer and that’s why I don’t want to lose this game as some kind of failed project of game industry. But I also don’t have any idea of how to stop hating this game like I am now

I haven’t spent since the Overgrown Rift started (didn’t pay for it or the current Rift-or any DLCs or cosmetics in that time, either). I recently decided to uninstall for what will probably be the last time. I also watched the video-which just adds another reason to my list of “reasons I don’t want to play DBD anymore.”
The game’s not in a good state technically, and that’s an understatement. Changes that could make the game better are held back by spaghetti coding and the devs insistence on pumping out new content instead of actually pausing completely and rewriting their code from the ground up while forgoing new releases until they do. But as explained in that video, they’re very unlikely to ever do that. It doesn’t help that in my opinion the “Project Health” so far has brought more bad changes than good changes to the game and that the game is being further pushed in a comp/looping/grindy direction that as someone who’s always played casually on both sides (solo queue survivor and mained Skull Merchant as killer), I’m simply not interested in. The game feels like a job now (complete with coworkers that are toxic/have absurd ping on purpose for an unfair advantage/abusing glitches/running “comp” filters) more often than not.
I too love the potential of DBD, but until I see some hard evidence of the devs actually trying to fully unleash that potential (A.K.A. Very significant delays of any new content besides skins/rifts so they can finally fix their code)….yeah, I think I’m done.

I see people downvoting and all I can think is they are the ones benefiting from an unbalanced, buggy game. Plus, you're right, it is in a bad state despite this was the year Behavior said they would fix all of this.
I can't speak for the devs but they definitely need to hear this feedback because I too don't feel like playing anymore until all of this is fixed. The latest chapter had so many issues while there are still issues from previous chapters that need to be addressed. I dont know what's going on on their side, but it's clear something the devs are doing isn't working and the health of the game is getting worse as fixes are put on hold (Kanaki's hitbox for his ability, unlimited fast vaults with certain perk combos, etc.).
I hope they are taking this feedback and not only applying it. But talking with the community more often to resolve all of these things. What I'm trying to say is we probably should have better transparency and communication with the devs. I think a lot of games these days could benefit from this, but it'd be nice if Behavior broke standards and did it first.
My biggest pet leave is that we are still seeing new content pushed out that is causing more issues. I could personally wait like 6 months or even a year where all they did was health and maintenance. Maybe release new maps only, or one new survivor or only a killer here or there. I don't think we needed a map this chapter. Just the two characters or even just one at a time while delaying the other.
The game's health should be more important right now, at least that's how I feel and agree with you on.

I tend to ignore anyone that uses the term "spaghetti code", since this is usually bandied about by people who have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. I remember McLean talking about it (as well as the myth that the game uses Blueprints for everything)…
(really wish he didn't have a music event for every follow)

This is the only online multi I play. I was something of an addict with Uncharted 2 and 3 and Resident Evil 5, so I stopped. But now I'm addicted to this one. So I don't have much to compare it to. I'm a big horror fan, which is the only reason I picked it up to begin with.
I'm definitely older than the average player and I grew up long before micro-transactions (or even online multi) became a thing. I scoffed at the idea for years and I still don't buy much (most of the licensed characters are still locked for me) but I did buy the last two Rifts, which old me would have been shocked by.
I think my biggest issue with this game isn't its balance or its bugs but the people who play it. When I play killer, I play super fair but I still get taunted endlessly at exit gates or mid chase for no reason at all. I think this is the reason so many killer mains are so hateful towards survivors, because a good survivor team won't just destroy you, they'll be total dicks about it too, and for no reason. Whether you play bad or well, you'll get rude messages after the game. It's one of the reasons I've started to lean more towards survivor, because I don't get those messages.
As survivor, I never taunt killers unless I thought they played dirty or cheap. I won't taunt someone for a bad game. I won't flashlight click or act generally crummy. But killers will still tunnel, target, and hump me for no reason. The toxicity on both sides is terrible and the reason for that seems to be that the game has sides at all. If you play Call of Duty or some other deathmatch you're just in an equal match, but the us vs them in this game is built in.

Okay, so….
Thanks for providing some info apart of position that they use blueprint only. That’s actually good to know, but hearing his statement and having coding background myself …
Well. I’m not gonna tell here “look, I’m so professional here, so my opinion is more valid here.” Just gonna say I’m studying game design degree know, worked on c#, learning js, js node and express now for back end programming, working a lot on 3D graphics, so despite I didn’t work in unreal engine yet, I’m pretty acknowledged with how it supposed to work in terms of blueprint and I simply can’t agree with him in many terms. I say this so that the argument that I don't even know what I'm talking about won't be used against me.
- “Spaghetti code”. I can agree, this statement is simplifyingcode terms. But simplifying stuff to explain complicated terms in programming is a base knowledge. Nothing wrong to present it like this.
- “Code just look as a mess, but it’s not a problem”. Well…. That’s the biggest lie I heard from such experienced coder (if he is). Code can have complicated composition, but it should never look like a mess. Clear readability from the first glance is the most crucial component of programming hard skill, so when even inexperienced person look at the code and unable to find some logic of structuring while your code is done not on a machine code or some kind of assembling, your code is basically… not that good . Especially in live services, where u need quickly responce and commit changes ASAP. Overcomplicated chains make it unnecessary hard for tracking and handling with chain of errors
- He didn’t say they don’t use Blueprint at all. And yes, he addmited sometimes they stick to C++ for better performance. Here I see some kind of partial true. But that’s a huge reason why you have to avoid using blueprint as much as possible for online services…. Blueprint is way for faster prototyping. Large scale projects can be created by Blueprint, but when this large scale project dependent on network connection and that’s basically a multiplayer game, performance should be your priority 1. Not “We used C++ for some better performance” . Ping issues where killers were hosting servers and basically their ping decided how game should go, and that’s now, still, we have lug switches who can bring advantage from this really makes me doubt in his words, that they deal with performance well.
The most important thing is that the video shows at what time he said this statement. The Blueprint/C++ ratio in the project right now is still unknown, and we don’t have direct access to their project. After the terrible technical release of TWD, which is comparable in quality to their first transition to unreal or the release of the chapter with Twins, I would say that I simply do not trust them. The person in the video is very disingenuous and for me is trying to manipulate the fact that “you are not programmers, so you do not understand that everything is fine in BluePrint”. Well, I’m learning programming now and had internship. And I’m person with eyes who playing this game regularly. The technical state of the game… is disaster. And we have explanation either that it’s Blueprint issue, or I don’t want to claim this, big incompetence from devs then.

I prefer to care about balancing/technical state of the game more. Toxicity in this fandom is partially a consequence of how people are trying to deal with balancing in this game. People tunnelling not because they are toxic and hate you personally. Same with survivors who probably survived first time after 10 streak losses. After my first discussion here I kinda stopped caring about fairness of this game. I’m playing this game for my personal enjoyment. Nothing matter about other side comfort. I’m not toxic person who insulting people or taunt them. And that's should be enough. For everyone. Game provide you tools to win for both sides. Commit to sweaty gameplay in sfw / meta killer is enough to deal with winrate% issue. So, for me nothing about community, but pure balance and technical state of the game.
I can’t fix toxic people by kindness. No one can. Unfortunately.
