What is the definition of 4k?

I thought the definition of a 4k was killing all 4 people in general. My boyfriend says that a 4k is hooking all 4 people at the same time. I swear I've seen people refer to killing all 4 people throughout the trial as a 4k, so what is the actual definition of it?

But they don't all have to die at the same time right? Like if one dies at the beginning, and then you were to sacrifice the last one during the end game collapse, it's still a 4k?
